AbstractVariations in the amount of the light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-binding protein complex (LHCII) is essential for regulation of the uptake of light into photosystem II. An endogenous proteolytic system was found to be involved in the degradation of LHCII in response to elevated light intensities and the proteolysis was shown to be under tight regulation [Yang, D.-H. et al. (1998) Plant Physiol. 118, 827–834]. In this study, the substrate specificity and recognition site towards the protease were examined using reconstituted wild-type and mutant recombinant LHCII. Liquid−Liquid Equilibria for the System 1-Methyl Propyl Ethanoate (1) + Acetic Acid (2) + Water (3) at (283.15 and 323.15) K

Liquid−liquid equilibrium (LLE) data for the system 1-methyl propyl ethanoate + acetic acid + water were measured at temperatures of (283.15 and 323.15) K. The temperature influence on the LLE data is very small in the temperature range studied. The NRTL and UNIQUAC models were used to correlate the data for both ternary systems. The interaction parameters obtained from both models successfully correlated the equilibrium compositions.

A Difficult Case of Necrotizing Fasciitis Caused By Acinetobacter baumannii

This study reports the case of a 55-year-old woman with diabetes with a necrotizing fasciitis of the right lower limb and the perineum, first admitted at the emergency department for septic shock with cardiac arrest, and later transferred to the department of surgery. Microbiological and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis caused by Acinetobacter baumanii. A broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy was administered and later readjusted according to the results of microbiological culture. Intensive hemodynamic support was required. Drug resistance patterns of bacteria isolated from patients with nosocomial pneumonia at Tehran hospitals during 2009-2011

Introduction: Nosocomial pneumonia remains an important cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Surveillance programs play an important role in the identification of common etiologic agents and local patterns of antimicrobial resistance. Methodology: In this study we determined the frequency and antimicrobial susceptibility of pathogens isolated from patients with nosocomial pneumonia during 2009 to 2011. Results: A total of 642 bacteria were isolated from 516 suspected samples. Acinetobacter baumannii (21.1%, n = 136), was the commonest isolated pathogen followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (17.4%, n = 112) , Staphylococcus aureus (15.8%, n = 102) and enterococci (8.4% n = 54). Cladosins L-O, new hybrid polyketides from the endophytic fungus Cladosporium sphaerospermum WBS017

Abstract The endophytic fungus Cladosporium sphaerospermum WBS017 was obtained from healthy bulbs of Fritillaria unibracteata var. wabuensis. Fermentation of C. sphaerospermum on solid rice medium yielded three new hybrid polyketides, cladosins L−N (1–3), and a known derivative cladodionen (4). Further cultivation of this fungus on white bean medium afforded an additional new hybrid polyketide, cladosin O (5) along with three known analogues (6–8). The structures of the new compounds were elucidated using a combination of NMR and HRESIMS data.
