AS4 message exchange protocol consolidation through the European CEF eDelivery infrastructure
2020
Since 2014, the European Union has supported the creation of cross-border communication networks based on an AS4 eDelivery solution through the Connecting Europe Facility. This article describes the current status of the uptake of the AS4 message exchange protocol in accordance with both the European infrastructure CEF eDelivery and the European regulation n°910/2014 on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market. The main objective is to present an analysis of the achieved results from the implementation of the AS4 solution in several European projects carried out during the last 12 years to verify the impact of these projects around Euro…
Smartphone Apps for the Treatment of Mental Disorders: Systematic Review
2020
Background Smartphone apps are an increasingly popular means for delivering psychological interventions to patients suffering from a mental disorder. In line with this popularity, there is a need to analyze and summarize the state of the art, both from a psychological and technical perspective. Objective This study aimed to systematically review the literature on the use of smartphones for psychological interventions. Our systematic review has the following objectives: (1) analyze the coverage of mental disorders in research articles per year; (2) study the types of assessment in research articles per mental disorder per year; (3) map the use of advanced technical features, such as sensors…
Renewable energy growth and the financial performance of electric utilities: A panel data study
2017
Electric utilities are under pressure to increase clean energy production. Although the adoption of renewable energy can improve the utilities' environmental performance, a fundamental question is if it also pays in economic terms. Building on the natural-resource-based view of the firm, we answer this question using two data analysis methods. First, we carry out a regression analysis of panel data from 66 large electric utilities covering the period 2005–2014, applying both a fixed and random effects estimator. Subsequently, we use the Granger causality test to explore possible causality links. Our results show a negative correlation at the firm level between renewable energy increase and …
Energy and economic analysis of air-to-air heat pumps as an alternative to domestic gas boiler heating systems in the South of Italy
2019
Abstract According to the electricity tariff recently issued by the Italian government for the domestic heating systems fed with heat pumps (HP), an energy and economic analysis was carried out with the aim of investigating the effectiveness of the air-to-air heat pump systems (HPS) as an alternative to the traditional heating using domestic gas boilers systems (GBS). For the purpose of this study, the apartments of three residential buildings were examined. The hourly heating loads were calculated with the ASHRAE radiant time series and the coefficient of performance (COP) of the HPs was evaluated for each operating condition. The costs for the heating system installation and electricity a…
Solar and Heat Pump Systems for Domestic Hot Water Production on a Small Island: The Case Study of Lampedusa
2020
The achievement of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, related to energy and resource use, is a critical issue for small and insulated communities. In many minor islands, solar energy is not correctly exploited, and electrical heaters are connected to weak grids with very a high share of generation by fossil fuels. As a consequence, there is the necessity to assess the potential and the suitability of diffusion of alternative systems to avoid dependency on the electrical grid and reduce carbon emissions. This paper aims to evaluate the technical and economic performances of some alternative systems exploiting renewable energy for domestic hot water production. Four different syste…
Improving the Training Methods for Designers of Flexible Production Cells in Factories of the Future
2020
This work proposes a design method for flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). The method reduces the learning curve by helping employees to solve problems related to the design and optimization of the layout, operation and control of FMS, avoiding the drawbacks of current tools. The approach uses Domain Specific Modeling Languages (DSML) for specification of FMS. The paper presents the definition of the DSML and the implementation of the graphical modeling and simulation tool bringing important contributions to development of the domain through the use of constructions from categories theory for DSML specifications. This mathematical basis allows the definition of constraints to avoid supple…
Big Data in operations and supply chain management: a systematic literature review and future research agenda
2021
In the era of digitalisation, the role of Big Data is proliferating, receiving considerable attention in all sectors and domains. The domain of operations and supply chain management (OSCM) is no different since it offers multiple opportunities to generate a large magnitude of data in real-time. Such extensive opportunities for data generation have attracted academics and practitioners alike who are eager to tap different elements of Big Data application in OSCM. Despite the richness of prior studies, there is limited research that extensively reviews the extant findings to present an overview of the different facets of this area. The current study addresses this gap by conducting a systema…
A laplace type problem for three lattices with non-convex cell
2016
In this paper we consider three lattices with cells represented in Fig. 1, 3 and 5 and we determine the probability that a random segment of constant length intersects a side of lattice. c ⃝2016 All rights reserved.
Cross-Layer MAC Protocol for Unbiased Average Consensus Under Random Interference
2019
Wireless Sensor Networks have been revealed as a powerful technology to solve many different problems through sensor nodes cooperation. One important cooperative process is the so-called average gossip algorithm, which constitutes a building block to perform many inference tasks in an efficient and distributed manner. From the theoretical designs proposed in most previous work, this algorithm requires instantaneous symmetric links in order to reach average consensus. However, in a realistic scenario wireless communications are subject to interferences and other environmental factors, which results in random instantaneous topologies that are, in general, asymmetric. Consequently, the estimat…
Extreme minimal learning machine: Ridge regression with distance-based basis
2019
The extreme learning machine (ELM) and the minimal learning machine (MLM) are nonlinear and scalable machine learning techniques with a randomly generated basis. Both techniques start with a step in which a matrix of weights for the linear combination of the basis is recovered. In the MLM, the feature mapping in this step corresponds to distance calculations between the training data and a set of reference points, whereas in the ELM, a transformation using a radial or sigmoidal activation function is commonly used. Computation of the model output, for prediction or classification purposes, is straightforward with the ELM after the first step. In the original MLM, one needs to solve an addit…
