Assessing the performance of thermal inertia and Hydrus models to estimate surface soil water content
2017
The knowledge of soil water content (SWC) dynamics in the upper soil layer is important for several hydrological processes. Due to the difficulty of assessing the spatial and temporal SWC dynamics in the field, some model-based approaches have been proposed during the last decade. The main objective of this work was to assess the performance of two approaches to estimate SWC in the upper soil layer under field conditions: the physically-based thermal inertia and the Hydrus model. Their validity was firstly assessed under controlled laboratory conditions. Thermal inertia was firstly validated in laboratory conditions using the transient line heat source (TLHS) method. Then, it was applied in…
Coaxial Slot Antenna Design for Microwave Hyperthermia using Finite- Difference Time-Domain and Finite Element Method
2011
Hyperthermia also called thermal therapy or thermotherapy is a type of cancer treatment in which body tissue is exposed to high temperatures. Research has shown that high temperatures can damage and kill cancer cells, usually with minimal injury to normal tissues. Otherwise, ablation or high temperature hyperthermia, including lasers and the use of radiofrequency, microwaves, and high-intensity focused ultrasound, are gaining attention as an alternative to standard sur- gical therapies. The electromagnetic microwave irradiation applied to the tumor tissue causes water molecules to vibrate and rotate, resulting in tissue heating and subsequently cell death via thermal-induced protein denatur…
Quantitative colorimetric-imaging analysis of nickel in iron meteorites.
2011
A quantitative analytical imaging approach for determining the nickel content of metallic meteorites is proposed. The approach uses a digital image of a series of standard solutions of the nickel-dimethylglyoxime coloured chelate and a meteorite sample solution subjected to the same treatment as the nickel standards for quantitation. The image is processed with suitable software to assign a colour-dependent numerical value (analytical signal) to each standard. Such a value is directly proportional to the analyte concentration, which facilitates construction of a calibration graph where the value for the unknown sample can be interpolated to calculate the nickel content of the meteorite. The…
Structure and function of the vacuolar Ccc1/VIT1 family of iron transporters and its regulation in fungi
2020
Iron is an essential micronutrient for most living beings since it participates as a redox active cofactor in many biological processes including cellular respiration, lipid biosynthesis, DNA replication and repair, and ribosome biogenesis and recycling. However, when present in excess, iron can participate in Fenton reactions and generate reactive oxygen species that damage cells at the level of proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Organisms have developed different molecular strategies to protect themselves against the harmful effects of high concentrations of iron. In the case of fungi and plants, detoxification mainly occurs by importing cytosolic iron into the vacuole through the Ccc1/V…
Intrinsic Hardy–Orlicz spaces of conformal mappings
2014
We define a new type of Hardy-Orlicz spaces of conformal mappings on the unit disk where in place of the value |f(x)| we consider the intrinsic path distance between f(x) and f(0) in the image domain. We show that if the Orlicz function is doubling then these two spaces are actually the same, and we give an example when the intrinsic Hardy-Orlicz space is strictly smaller.

Uniform continuity of quasiconformal mappings and conformal deformations
2008
We prove that quasiconformal maps onto domains satisfying a suitable growth condition on the quasihyperbolic metric are uniformly continuous even when both domains are equipped with internal metric. The improvement over previous results is that the internal metric can be used also in the image domain. We also extend this result for conformal deformations of the euclidean metric on the unit ball of R n \mathbb {R}^n .
Multiplexing of encrypted data using fractal masks
2012
In this Letter, we present to the best of our knowledge a new all-optical technique for multiple-image encryption and multiplexing, based on fractal encrypting masks. The optical architecture is a joint transform correlator. The multiplexed encrypted data are stored in a photorefractive crystal. The fractal parameters of the key can be easily tuned to lead to a multiplexing operation without cross talk effects. Experimental results that support the potential of the method are presented.
Clinical resistance to the kinase inhibitor PKC412 in acute myeloid leukemia by mutation of Asn-676 in the FLT3 tyrosine kinase domain.
2005
Activating mutations in the FLT3 tyrosine kinase (TK) occur in approximately 35% of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Therefore, targeting mutated FLT3 is an attractive therapeutic strategy, and early clinical trials testing FLT3 TK inhibitors (TKI) showed measurable clinical responses. Most of these responses were transient; however, in a subset of patients blast recurrence was preceded by an interval of prolonged remission. The etiology of clinical resistance to FLT3-TKI in AML is unclear but is of major significance for the development of future therapeutic strategies. We searched for mechanisms of resistance in 6 patients with AML who had relapses upon PKC412 treatment. In an …
Low Density Lipoprotein Receptor-related Protein (LRP) Interacts with Presenilin 1 and Is a Competitive Substrate of the Amyloid Precursor Protein (A…
2005
Presenilin 1 (PS1) is a critical component of the gamma-secretase complex, which is involved in the cleavage of several substrates including the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and the Notch receptor. Recently, the low density receptor-related protein (LRP) has been shown to be cleaved by a gamma-secretase-like activity. We postulated that LRP may interact with PS1 and tested its role as a competitive substrate for gamma-secretase. In this report we show that LRP colocalizes and interacts with endogenous PS1 using coimmunoprecipitation and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy. In addition, we found that gamma-secretase active site inhibitors do not disrupt the interaction between LRP an…
