Direct Imaging of Chiral Domain Walls and Néel‐Type Skyrmionium in Ferrimagnetic Alloys

2021

International audience; The evolution of chiral spin structures is studied in ferrimagnet Ta/Ir/Fe/GdFeCo/Pt multilayers as a function of temperature using scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis (SEMPA). The GdFeCo ferrimagnet exhibits pure right-hand Néel-type domain wall (DW) spin textures over a large temperature range. This indicates the presence of a negative Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) that can originate from both the top Fe/Pt and the Co/Pt interfaces. From measurements of the DW width, as well as complementary magnetic characterization, the exchange stiffness as a function of temperature is ascertained. The exchange stiffness is surprisingly mostly const…

Recent developments in the manipulation of magnetic domain walls in CoFeB–MgO wires for applications to high-density nonvolatile memories

2015

Abstract The recent discovery that magnetic domain walls can be moved under a small current without any magnetic field opens a perspective for a paradigm shift in mass storage design. However, several fundamental questions must be answered before the technology can be considered feasible. This review covers the current understanding of domain wall (DW) propagation in CoFeB–MgO structures with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. These films exhibit a very low density of pinning centers and can be integrated in Magnetic Tunnel Junctions, making them very promising for manipulating multiple domain walls in ultra-high-density spintronic devices. Several important issues are addressed: the physic…

Series expansion for the effective conductivity of a periodic dilute composite with thermal resistance at the two-phase interface

2019

We study the asymptotic behavior of the effective thermal conductivity of a periodic two-phase dilute composite obtained by introducing into an infinite homogeneous matrix a periodic set of inclusions of a different material, each of them of size proportional to a positive parameter ?. We assume that the normal component of the heat flux is continuous at the two-phase interface, while we impose that the temperature field displays a jump proportional to the normal heat flux. For ? small, we prove that the effective conductivity can be represented as a convergent power series in ? and we determine the coefficients in terms of the solutions of explicit systems of integral equations.

Digital video-electrochemistry (DVEC) to assess electrochromic materials in the frequency domain: RGB colorimetry impedance spectroscopy

2021

Abstract This work is the first one allowing the characterization of electrochromic devices simultaneously at various parts on their surface and different rates of color change. We describe a new proficient and affordable methodology for reporting electrochromic parameters such as coloration efficiency, optical contrast, and switching time based on the use of digital video-electrochemistry (DVEC) in the ac regime, namely RGB colorimetry impedance spectroscopy. Simultaneously with the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the RGB color changes of an electrochromic electrode were recorded by a CCD digital camera at 120 digital images per second. In such conditions, RGB electrochromic change…

Time‐Domain Integration of Broadband Terahertz Pulses in a Tapered Two‐Wire Waveguide

2021

In this work, the time-domain integration of broadband terahertz (THz) pulses via a tapered two-wire waveguide (TTWWG) is reported. Such a guiding structure consists of two metallic wires separated by a variable air gap that shrinks down to a subwavelength size as the movement takes from the waveguide input to its output. It is shown that while an input THz pulse propagates toward the subwavelength output gap, it is reshaped into its first-order time integral waveform. In order to prove the TTWWG time integration functionality, the THz pulse is detected directly within the output gap of the waveguide, so as to prevent the outcoupling diffraction from altering the shape of the time-integrate…

Turing pattern formation in the Brusselator system with nonlinear diffusion.

2013

In this work we investigate the effect of density dependent nonlinear diffusion on pattern formation in the Brusselator system. Through linear stability analysis of the basic solution we determine the Turing and the oscillatory instability boundaries. A comparison with the classical linear diffusion shows how nonlinear diffusion favors the occurrence of Turing pattern formation. We study the process of pattern formation both in 1D and 2D spatial domains. Through a weakly nonlinear multiple scales analysis we derive the equations for the amplitude of the stationary patterns. The analysis of the amplitude equations shows the occurrence of a number of different phenomena, including stable supe…

Navier-Stokes equations on an exterior circular domain: construction of the solution and the zero viscosity limit

1997

Abstract In this Note, we consider the limit of Navier-Stokes equations on a circular domain. By an explicit construction of the solution, it is proved that, when viscosity goes to zero, solution converges to the Euler solution outside the boundary layer and to the Prandtl solution inside the boundary layer.

Back to “Reasoning”

2016

Is rigor always strictly related to precision and accuracy? This is a fundamental question in the realm of Fuzzy Logic; the first instinct would be to answer in the positive, but the question is much more complex than it appears, as true rigor is obtained also by a careful examination of the context, and limiting to a mechanical transfer of techniques, procedures and conceptual attitudes from one domain to another, such as from the pure engineering feats or the ones of mathematical logic to the study of human reasoning, does not guarantee optimal results. Starting from this question, we discuss some implications of going back to the very concept of reasoning as it is used in natural languag…

A new dynamic identification technique: application to the evaluation of the equivalent strut for infilled frames

2003

A new time domain identification technique for systems under Gaussian white noise input is presented, requiring for its application the measurement of the system response but no information about input intensity. The technique proposed is based on the statistic moment equations derived by using a special class of mathematical models named "potential models". These models allow one to determine fundamental properties of the response statistics, making it possible to identify stiffness and dissipation features of a structural system, and also to determine the excitation input. The technique proposed is here applied to the identification of the strut equivalent to the infill of a single story-…
