Analysis of the finite difference time domain technique to solve the Schrödinger equation for quantum devices

2004

An extension of the finite difference time domain is applied to solve the Schrödinger equation. A systematic analysis of stability and convergence of this technique is carried out in this article. The numerical scheme used to solve the Schrödinger equation differs from the scheme found in electromagnetics. Also, the unit cell employed to model quantum devices is different from the Yee cell used by the electrical engineering community. A bound for the time step is derived to ensure stability. Several numerical experiments in quantum structures demonstrate the accuracy of a second order, comparable to the analysis of electromagnetic devices with the Yee cell. a!Electronic mail: Antonio.Sorian…

Simple absorbing layer conditions for shallow wave simulations with Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

2013

Abstract We study and implement a simple method, based on the Perfectly Matched Layer approach, to treat non reflecting boundary conditions with the Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics numerical algorithm. The method is based on the concept of physical damping operating on a fictitious layer added to the computational domain. The method works for both 1D and 2D cases, but here we illustrate it in the case of 1D and 2D time dependent shallow waves propagating in a finite domain.

Spin eigenexcitations of an antiferromagnetic skyrmion

2019

We theoretically predict and classify the localized modes of a skyrmion in a collinear uniaxial antiferromagnet and discuss how they can be excited. As a central result, we find two branches of skyrmion eigenmodes with distinct physical properties characterized by being low or high energy excitations. The frequency dependence of the low-energy modes scales as $R_0^{-2}$ for skyrmions with large radius $R_0$. Furthermore, we predict localized high-energy eigenmodes, which have no direct ferromagnetic counterpart. Except for the breathing mode, we find that all localized antiferromagnet skyrmion modes, both in the low and high-energy branch, are doubly degenerated in the absence of a magnetic…

Finite difference time domain simulation of soil ionization in grounding systems under lightning surge conditions

2004

This paper proposes a Maxwell’s equations finite difference time domain (FDTD) approach for electromagnetic transients in ground electrodes in order to take into account the non linear effects due to soil ionization. A time variable soil resistivity method is used in order to simulate the soil breakdown, without the formulation of an initial hypothesis about the geometrical shape of the ionized zone around the electrodes. The model has been validated by comparing the computed results with available data found in technical literature referred to concentrated earths. Some application examples referred to complex grounding systems are reported to show the computational capability of the propos…

High-dimensional one-way quantum processing enabled by optical d-level cluster states

2019

By introducing and modifying two-photon hyper-entangled states in the time-frequency domain using an on-chip micro-cavity, we succeed in generating high-dimensional cluster states, demonstrate d-level measurement-based quantum processing and show the state’s higher noise tolerance.

Junction conditions in Palatinif(R) gravity

2020

We work out the junction conditions for $f(R)$ gravity formulated in metric-affine (Palatini) spaces using a tensor distributional approach. These conditions are needed for building consistent models of gravitating bodies with an interior and exterior regions matched at some hypersurface. Some of these conditions depart from the standard Darmois-Israel ones of General Relativity and from their metric $f(R)$ counterparts. In particular, we find that the trace of the stress-energy momentum tensor in the bulk must be continuous across the matching hypersurface, though its normal derivative need not to. We illustrate the relevance of these conditions by considering the properties of stellar sur…

Existence results for a nonlinear nonautonomous transmission problem via domain perturbation

2021

In this paper we study the existence and the analytic dependence upon domain perturbation of the solutions of a nonlinear nonautonomous transmission problem for the Laplace equation. The problem is defined in a pair of sets consisting of a perforated domain and an inclusion whose shape is determined by a suitable diffeomorphism $\phi$. First we analyse the case in which the inclusion is a fixed domain. Then we will perturb the inclusion and study the arising boundary value problem and the dependence of a specific family of solutions upon the perturbation parameter $\phi$.

High performance for refractive index sensors via symmetry-protected guided mode resonance.

2021

The symmetry breaking in a typical dielectric GMR-grating structure allows the coupling of the incident wave with the so-called Symmetry-Protected Modes (SPM). In this present work, the excitation conditions of such particular modes are investigated. A parametric study including the grating dimensions is carried out to exploit them for a blood refractive index sensing with higher Sensitivity (S) and Figure Of Merit (FOM). To our knowledge, the performances obtained by FDTD calculations (Q = 2.1 × 104, S = 657 nm/RIU and FOM ≃ ~9 112 RIU−1) and FMM calculations (Q = 3 × 106, S = 656 nm/RIU and FOM ≃ ~1.64 × 106 RIU−1) are the highest level reached.

The transverse structure of the QCD string

2010

The characterization of the transverse structure of the QCD string is discussed. We formulate a conjecture as to how the stress-energy tensor of the underlying gauge theory couples to the string degrees of freedom. A consequence of the conjecture is that the energy density and the longitudinal-stress operators measure the distribution of the transverse position of the string, to leading order in the string fluctuations, whereas the transverse-stress operator does not. We interpret recent numerical measurements of the transverse size of the confining string and show that the difference of the energy and longitudinal-stress operators is the appropriate probe to use when comparing with the nex…
