Abstract We extend the classical Carathéodory extension theorem to quasiconformal Jordan domains (Y, dY ). We say that a metric space (Y, dY ) is a quasiconformal Jordan domain if the completion ̄Y of (Y, dY ) has finite Hausdorff 2-measure, the boundary ∂Y = ̄Y \ Y is homeomorphic to 𝕊1, and there exists a homeomorphism ϕ: 𝔻 →(Y, dY ) that is quasiconformal in the geometric sense. We show that ϕ has a continuous, monotone, and surjective extension Φ: 𝔻 ̄ → Y ̄. This result is best possible in this generality. In addition, we find a necessary and sufficient condition for Φ to be a quasiconformal homeomorphism. We provide sufficient conditions for the restriction of Φ to 𝕊1 being a quasi…
Topotecan triggers apoptosis in p53-deficient cells by forcing degradation of XIAP and survivin thereby activating caspase-3-mediated Bid cleavage.
2009
The topoisomerase I inhibitor topotecan (TPT) is used in the therapy of different tumors including high-grade gliomas. We previously showed that TPT-induced apoptosis depends on p53 with p53 wild-type (wt) cells being more resistant because of p53-controlled degradation of topoisomerase I. Here, we show that p53-deficient (p53(-/-)) fibroblasts undergo excessive mitochondrial apoptosis featuring H2AX phosphorylation, Bcl-x(L) decline, cytochrome c release, caspase-9/-3/-2 activation, and cleavage of Bid. In wt and apaf-1(-/-) cells, caspase-2 did not become activated and Bid was not cleaved. In addition, p53(-/-) cells cotreated with TPT and caspase-3 inhibitor showed neither caspase-2 acti…
A multi-methodology and sustainability-supporting framework for implementation and assessment of a holistic building renovation
Some Notes About Distribution Frame Multipliers
2020
Inspired by a recent work about distribution frames, the definition of multiplier operator is extended in the rigged Hilbert spaces setting and a study of its main properties is carried on. In particular, conditions for the density of domain and boundedness are given. The case of Riesz distribution bases is examined in order to develop a symbolic calculus.
Programming languages and dynamic instructional tools: Addressing students’ knowledge base
1992
The chapter presents an instructional computer environment to be used in introductory Pascal programming classes. Traditional programming courses do not foster the kind of knowledge structures that are the trademark of expert programmers. These knowledge structures or programming templates provide programmers with a ready-to-use library of routines from which they draw when writing a new program. Developed as a hypertext tool, TAP (Template Assisted Programming) is an instructional environment to teach programming that emphasizes the development and use of such a library of routines by presenting students with a multiple representation of programming knowledge. In TAP students can (a) switc…
A multidomain approach of the SBEM in the plate bending analysis
2009
The aim of this paper is to apply the multidomain approach of the SBEM to the plate bending analysis. The plate is subdivided into macro-elements connected each other along the interface boundary. Every macro-element is defined by an elastic relation which connects the generalized shear force and moments at the interface to the nodal displacements and rotations of the same boundary and to the loads. This approach allows a considerable reduction of the variables through a condensation process which leaves the interface kinematical unknowns, only. The assembly process may be obtained through the regularity conditions prescribed at the interface.
SEAL: A Domain-Specific Language for Novice Wireless Sensor Network Programmers
2013
A lot of the prospective wireless sensor network users are novice programmers. Their experience in general-purpose programming languages is either limited or completely nonexistent. There are both financial and scientific incentives to empower these users and allow them to write sensor network applications on their own, rather than having to rely on a qualified computer science professional. We present SEAL, a sensor network programming language designed for novice programmers. SEAL manages to avoid computer science concepts that are hard to grasp for novices, while remaining suitable for typical sensor network application scenarios. The language is extensible in application-specific way, h…
An identifiable model to assess frequency-domain Granger causality in the presence of significant instantaneous interactions
2010
We present a new approach for the investigation of Granger causality in the frequency domain by means of the partial directed coherence (PDC). The approach is based on the utilization of an extended multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) model, including instantaneous effects in addition to the lagged effects traditionally studied, to fit the observed multiple time series prior to PDC computation. Model identification is performed combining standard MVAR coefficient estimation with a recent technique for instantaneous causal modeling based on independent component analysis. The approach is first validated on simulated MVAR processes showing that, in the presence of instantaneous effects, only t…
The role of NF-AT transcription factors in T cell activation and differentiation11We dedicate this review to Prof. Dr. Rigomar Rieger (Gatersleben), …
2000
AbstractThe family of genuine NF-AT transcription factors consists of four members (NF-AT1 [or NF-ATp], NF-AT2 [or NF-ATc], NF-AT3 and NF-AT4 [or NF-ATx]) which are characterized by a highly conserved DNA binding domain (is designated as Rel similarity domain) and a calcineurin binding domain. The binding of the Ca2+-dependent phosphatase calcineurin to this region controls the nuclear import and exit of NF-ATs. This review deals (1) with the structure of NF-AT proteins, (2) the DNA binding of NF-AT factors and their interaction with AP-1, (3) NF-AT target genes, (4) signalling pathways leading to NF-AT activation: the role of protein kinases and calcineurin, (5) the nuclear entry and exit …
