Random vibration of linear and nonlinear structural systems with singular matrices: A frequency domain approach

2017

Abstract A frequency domain methodology is developed for stochastic response determination of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) linear and nonlinear structural systems with singular matrices. This system modeling can arise when a greater than the minimum number of coordinates/DOFs is utilized, and can be advantageous, for instance, in cases of complex multibody systems where the explicit formulation of the equations of motion can be a nontrivial task. In such cases, the introduction of additional/redundant DOFs can facilitate the formulation of the equations of motion in a less labor intensive manner. Specifically, relying on the generalized matrix inverse theory, a Moore-Penrose (M-P) based f…

UWB Channel Measurements for Hand-Portable Devices: A Comparative Study

2007

On-body UWB signal propagation is analyzed using two different types of UWB antennas. For the study, measurements of the frequency response by means of a VNA (vector network analyzer) are performed at 2001 discrete frequency points in the 3 to 6 GHz range. Separated measures are taken for four different transmitter positions on the head and six receiver positions on the body. Channel estimation parameters, such as mean excess delay, delay spread and path loss are obtained. Results are similar for both types of antennas regarding path loss exponent and average power delay profiles.

Frequency domain identification of the fractional Kelvin-Voigt’s parameters for viscoelastic materials

2019

Abstract In this work, a new innovative method is used to identify the parameters of fractional Kelvin-Voigt constitutive equation. These parameters are: the order of fractional derivation operator, 0 ≤ α ≤ 1, the coefficient of fractional derivation operator, CV, and the stiffness of the model, KV. A particular dynamic test setup is developed to capture the experimental data. Its outputs are time histories of the excitation and excited accelerations. The investigated specimen is a polymeric cubic silicone gel material known as α-gel. Two kinds of experimental excitations are used as random frequencies and constant frequency harmonic excitations. In this study, experimental frequency respon…

Extended fractional-order Jeffreys model of viscoelastic hydraulic cylinder

2020

A novel modeling approach for viscoelastic hydraulic cylinders, with negligible inertial forces, is proposed, based on the extended fractional-order Jeffreys model. Analysis and physical reasoning for the parameter constraints and order of the fractional derivatives are provided. Comparison between the measured and computed frequency response functions and time domain transient response argues in favor of the proposed four-parameter fractional-order model.

A simple joint estimation-detection technique for OFDM systems

2005

In this work a simple approach for the joint estimation-detection in a frequency selective severe fading environment of OFDM signals adopting PSK constellations is presented. A linear predictor of suitable order is adopted for the channel estimation in the frequency domain. The predictor coefficients are estimated on the basis of a sample estimation of the autocorrelation of the channel frequency response, aided by a preliminary differential decoding, in a blockwise manner. The detection technique proposed here is based on a simple tree search where a small number of best survivor paths are maintained at each step. Despite the simplicity of above detection approach, the simulation results s…

UWB Channel Measurements for Measures for Hand-Portable and Wearable Devices

2007

On-body UWB signal propagation is analyzed for propagation channels surrounding the body in an usual office environment for an application requiring the transmission of signals recorded from the head to a device such as a mobile phone or a PDA carried by the subject or also from the transmitter on the head to other devices located along the body. For the study, measurements of the frequency response by means of a VNA (Vector Network Analyzer) are performed at 2001 discrete frequency points in the 3 to 6 GHz range. Channel estimation parameters, such as mean excess delay, delay spread and path loss are obtained. Results show that for the transmitter located on top of the head best average pe…

Subjective image fidelity metric based on bit allocation of the human visual system in the DCT domain

1997

Until now, subjective image distortion measures have partially used diverse empirical facts concerning human perception: non-linear perception of luminance, masking of the impairments by a highly textured surround, linear filtering by the threshold contrast frequency response of the visual system, and non-linear post-filtering amplitude corrections in the frequency domain. In this work, we develop a frequency and contrast dependent metric in the DCT domain using a fully non-linear and suprathreshold contrast perception model: the Information Allocation Function (IAF) of the visual system. It is derived from experimental data about frequency and contrast incremental thresholds and it is cons…

Diagrammatic expansion for positive density-response spectra: Application to the electron gas

2015

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 90, 115134 (2014)] we put forward a diagrammatic expansion for the self-energy which guarantees the positivity of the spectral function. In this work we extend the theory to the density response function. We write the generic diagram for the density-response spectrum as the sum of partitions. In a partition the original diagram is evaluated using time-ordered Green's functions (GF) on the left-half of the diagram, antitime-ordered GF on the right-half of the diagram and lesser or greater GF gluing the two halves. As there exist more than one way to cut a diagram in two halves, to every diagram corresponds more than one partition. We recognize that the most co…

K-12 game programming course concept using textual programming

2011

Several programming environments have been constructed to facilitate novice programming at K-12 and CS0/CS1 levels. The environments can be roughly divided into those using visual or textual programming. This paper presents a K-12 game programming course concept based on textual programming. The concept is based on an easy-to-use C# library, called Jypeli, built on top of Microsoft XNA Framework. The library tries to maintain advantages of visual programming and avoid challenges of textual programming. In particular, the library helps beginners to program their first games in a short period of time and without a heavy syntactic load. The course concept and an initial evaluation consisting o…
