Screening for Solute Transporters in Plant Photosynthetic Membranes

As compared to chloroplast envelope transporters, the field of thylakoid transporters is largely unexplored. There is evidence for several transport activities in the plant thylakoid membrane, but only a copper P-type ATPase and an ATP/ADP carrier have been so far identified at the gene level in Arabidopsis thaliana. Using in silico analyses, we have predicted the existence of approximately 15 thylakoid transporters, including phosphate transporters and cation channels. Two new metabolites from the endophytic fungus Xylaria sp. isolated from the medicinal plant Curcuma xanthorrhiza

Abstract The endophytic fungus Xylaria sp. was isolated from healthy leaves of Curcuma xanthorrhiza, collected on the island of Timor, Indonesia. Two new compounds (1 and 2), together with the known resacetophenone (3), were isolated and their structures were elucidated on the basis of comprehensive NMR and mass spectral analyses. The enantiomers of rac-1 were separated by chiral HPLC and their HPLC-ECD spectra were recorded to determine the absolute configuration on the basis of TDDFT-ECD calculations. The olive fly, Bactrocera oleae, is the key pest on olives in the Mediterranean area. The pest can destroy, in some cases, up to 70% of the olive production. Its control relies mainly on chemical treatments, sometimes applied by aircraft over vast areas, with their subsequent ecological and toxicological side effects. Fern-dominated Rock Plant Communities of Tajikistan (Middle Asia)

The results of phytosociological research conducted on the fern vegetation of rock crevices and clefts of the Pamir-Alai Mountains in Tajikistan are presented. During field surveys done in 2010–2013, 78 phytosociological relevés were sampled. Plant species were recorded according to the Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale. A synopsis of the fern communities of the montane and high altitude zones in Tajikistan is proposed. In the examined vegetation plots, species of 9 ferns, 58 angiosperms and 13 mosses were recorded. Separation of chitosomes and secretory vesicles from the ?slime? variant of Neurospora crassa

Cells from the “slime” variant of Neurospora crassa were broken in isotonic conditions by use of triethanolamine buffer plus EDTA. After removal of large membranous structures by low-speed centrifugation, chitosomes and secretory vesicles were separated by means of gel filtration, precipitation of membranous contaminants with Concanavalin A, and centrifugation in sucrose or glycerol gradients. Polypeptidic composition of fractions enriched in secretory vesicles or chitosomes was found to be distinct. Copper is an essential micronutrient that functions as a redox cofactor in multiple plant processes, including photosynthesis. Arabidopsis thaliana possesses a conserved family of CTR-like high-affinity copper transport proteins denoted as COPT1-5. COPT1, the only family member that is functionally characterized, participates in plant copper acquisition. This study functionally characterizes the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) plastidial glycolytic isoforms of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPCp) in photosynthetic and heterotrophic cells. We expressed the enzyme in gapcp double mutants (gapcp1gapcp2) under the control of photosynthetic (Rubisco small subunit RBCS2B [RBCS]) or heterotrophic (phosphate transporter PHT1.2 [PHT]) cell-specific promoters. Recent advances in the Arabidopsis sequencing project has elucidated the presence of two genes Atb561-A and Atb561-B that show limited homology to the DNA sequence encoding for the mammalian chromaffin granule cytochrome b-561 (cyt b-561). Detailed analysis of the structural features and conserved residues reveals, however, that the structural homology between the presumptive Arabidopsis proteins and the animal proteins is very high.
