Temporal aspects of the O-glycosylation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae mannoproteins

1986

Abstract Cleavage of the O-glycosyl bonds of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell wall mannoproteins by β-elimination resulted in the release of about 8% of the carbohydrate in the form of mannose and other low molecular weight oligomannosaccharides (mannose to mannopentaose), leaving 92% mannose still covalently linked to the peptide, and suggesting that this alkali-resistant fraction was N-glycosidically linked. At the non-permissive temperature, S. cerevisiae sec mutants accumulated in the cytoplasm mannoproteins with different degrees of O- and N-glycosylation. The glycoproteins of mutant sec 20-1 contained 60% of the carbohydrate linked by N-bonds, the remainder being O-glycosidically linked.…

Calculation of the molecular masses of two newly synthesized thermostable enzymes isolated from thermophilic microorganisms

1995

Two thermostable enzymes synthesized by thermophilic microorganisms were isolated and purified. A thermostable beta-galactosidase was produced in a continuous fermentation process by Bacillus stearothermophilus TP 32 as an intracellular enzyme. After applying different concentration procedures the raw extract enzyme was prepurified on a Sephadex G-200 size exclusion column. The isolated beta-galactosidase fraction was then separated with HPLC on a TSK G 3000 SW size exclusion column to determine the molecular mass based on calibration curves of standard proteins. The other enzyme, a thermostable protease, was synthesized by Bacillus stearothermophilus TP 26 as an extracellular enzyme. After…

Carotenoid-based colour polyphenism in a moth species: search for fitness correlates

2007

Carotenoid-based integumental coloration is often associated with individual performance in various animals. This is because the limited amount of the pigment has to be allocated to different vital functions. However, most of the evidence for the carotenoid-based trade-off comes from vertebrate studies, and it is unclear if this principle can be applied to insects. This possibility was investigated in Orgyia antiqua L. (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae). The larvae of this species are polyphenic in their coloration, varying from a highly conspicuous combination of yellow hair tufts on black background to cryptic appearance with brown hair tufts. The conspicuous larvae are aposematic, advertising t…

Proteins and enzymes of the peroxisomal membrane in mammals.

1993

Proteins of the peroxisomal membrane can be schematically divided into two groups, one being made up of more or less characterized proteins with generally unknown functions and the other consisting of enzyme activities of which the corresponding proteins have not been characterized. In the present report, these proteins and enzymes are described with the addition of unpublished results regarding their induction by peroxisome proliferators at the post-transcriptional level. Integral membrane proteins (IMPs) can be isolated using an alkaline solution of sodium carbonate. A dozen of preponderant IMPs can be seen on sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and the major band c…

Photolysis of Adsorbed Phases: Ethanoic Acid-Insulators and Semiconductors Systems. Influence of Acid-Base Properties.

1986

The paper reports the results of experiments in which the photodecomposition of adsorbed ethanoic acid (and in few cases of adsorbed acetone and ethanol) was carried out by using several silica gel samples, whose properties were modified by adding oxidic dopants as γ-Al2O3, which is acidic in character, and MgO, which is mainly basic. Also the related system MgO-Al2O3 was investigated. Few IR spectra on selected pure specimens and on specimens containing adsorbed ethanoic acid were recorded with the aim of following the variation of the surfaces-adsorbate interaction with the variation of the acid-base properties. It was also of interest to compare the photoreactivity of insulators and semi…

Polarization holographic recording in Disperse Red1 doped polyurethane polymer film

2011

In this report holographic recording of polarisation and surface relief gratings in Disperse Red 1 (DR1) doped polyurethane polymer films was studied. In this material DR1 is chemically bounded to polyurethane polymer main chain. Polarization holographic recording was performed by two orthogonal circularly polarized 532 nm laser beams. Photoinduced birefringence is a precondition for polarization holograms recording, therefore a detailed study of a photoinduced birefringence and changes of optical properties was performed. The lasers with wavelengths of 375nm, 448nm, 532 nm and 632.8 nm were used as pumping beam for sample excitation. The photoinduced birefringence Δn was measured at 532 nm…

Quantifying the inverse spin-Hall effect in highly doped PEDOT:PSS

2020

The authors provide experimental results that show the onset of the Nernst effect, thermovoltages and an inverse spin-Hall effect in the polymer PEDOT:PSS. Specifically, the observed inverse spin-Hall effect appears to be smaller than other measurements, but in better agreement with theoretical calculations.

New n-dopable thiophene based polymers

1999

Abstract New conjugated polymers containing variable amounts of thienyl and thienyl-S,S-dioxide units have been prepared by chemical or electrochemical polymerization of the appropriate substrates. The presence of the thienyl S,S-dioxide units leads to the decrease of the LUMO energies with respect to those of the ‘all thienyl’ counterparts. Electrochemical and spectro electrochemical data of n-doping of these materials are reported.

Structure formation in doped discotic polymers and low molar mass model systems

1992

Abstract Doping of low molar mass materials or polymers, possessing disc-like units, with electron acceptors leads to the stabilization of columnar discotic phases or even to the induction of such phases in compounds which either display a nematic discotic phase or only an amorphous phase in the absence of the electron acceptor. The induced columnar phase corresponds frequently to a hexagonally ordered one. We have observed, however, in addition the induction of new columnar phases such as the rectangularly ordered (Dro) and the columnar nematic phase (Nc). The enhancement of the tendency towards the formation of columnar phases is a consequence of electron acceptor—electron donor complex f…
