Enhancing the Activation and Releasing the Brakes: A Double Hit Strategy to Improve NK Cell Cytotoxicity Against Multiple Myeloma
2018
Natural killer (NK) cells are innate lymphocytes with a strong antitumor ability. In tumor patients, such as multiple myeloma (MM) patients, an elevated number of NK cells after stem cell transplantation (SCT) has been reported to be correlated with a higher overall survival rate. With the aim of improving NK cell use for adoptive cell therapy, we also addressed the cytotoxicity of patient-derived, cytokine-stimulated NK cells against MM cells at specific time points: at diagnosis and before and after autologous stem cell transplantation. Remarkably, after cytokine stimulation, the patients' NK cells did not significantly differ from those of healthy donors. In a small cohort of MM patients…
Parathyroid hormone-related peptide and 8701-BC breast cancer cell growth and invasion in vitro: evidence for growth-inhibiting and invasion-promotin…
1995
It has been previously reported that 8701-BC cells, derived from a primary carcinoma of the breast, constitutively express parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) gene and that N-terminal PTHrP immunoreactivity can be found in cell medium. Here we have firstly measured immunoreactive PTHrP in 8701-BC cell medium using antibodies raised against midregion and C-terminal fragments, and also demonstrated the expression of PTH/PTHrP receptor by 8701-BC cells. Secondly, we have examined the role, if any, elicited by diverse PTHrP domains on 8701-BC cell proliferation, and invasive behaviour in vitro related to production of extracellular proteolytic enzymes. Our data show that PTHrP [1-34], a…
Cd12Ag32(SePh)36 : Non-Noble Metal Doped Silver Nanoclusters
2019
While there are numerous recent reports on doping of a ligand-protected noble metal nanocluster (e.g., Au and Ag) with another noble metal, non-noble metal (e.g., Cd) doping remains challenging. Here, we design a phosphine-assisted synthetic strategy and synthesize a Cd doped Ag nanocluster, Cd12Ag32(SePh)36 (SePh: selenophenolate), which exhibits characteristic UV–vis absorption features and rare near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence at ∼1020 nm. The X-ray single crystal structure reveals an asymmetric two-shell Ag4@Ag24 metal kernel protected by four nonplanar Cd3Ag(SePh)9 metal–ligand frameworks. Furthermore, the electronic structure analysis shows that the cluster is a 20-electron “supe…
Principios rectores en la adopción de diligencias limitativas de los derechos reconocidos en el art. 18 ce
2021
Criminal Procedure Law reform carried out in 2015 requires, in order to adopt the investigation proceedings that limit the rights recognized by art. 18 Spanish Constitution, to respect the guiding principles of specialty, suitability, exceptionality, necessity and proportionality. This article aims, departing from the legal text and considering existing jurisprudence, to unveil the true meaning of these principles.
Preferential Modulation of the GABAergic vs. Dopaminergic Function in the Substantia Nigra by 5-HT2C Receptor
2009
Serotonin (5-HT) is intimately involved in the modulation of the basal ganglia circuitry and in its pathologies. The 5-HT pivotal role is supported by anatomical evidence demonstrating a large serotonergic innervation throughout the basal ganglia, with the highest concentration of this indole in the substantia nigra (SN). Among all the 5-HT receptors present in the SN, the 5-HT2C receptor subtype seems to be one of the principal receptors through which 5-HT exerts its function. In this chapter, we present in vivo electrophysiology and microdialysis evidence showing that the selective activation of 5-HT2C receptors does not affect dopaminergic function whereas it has a profound impact on GAB…
Continuous neuronal integration in the cerebral cortex of rodents and humans
2021

Timing an Accreting Millisecond Pulsar: Measuring the Accretion Torque in IGR J00291+5934
2006
We performed a timing analysis of the fastest accreting millisecond pulsar IGR J00291+5934 using RXTE data taken during the outburst of December 2004. We corrected the arrival times of all the events for the orbital (Doppler) effects and performed a timing analysis of the resulting phase delays. In this way we have the possibility to study, for the first time in this class of sources, the spin-up of a millisecond pulsar as a consequence of accretion torques during the X-ray outburst. The accretion torque gives us for the first time an independent estimate of the mass accretion rate onto the neutron star, which can be compared with the observed X-ray luminosity. We also report a revised valu…

Nicotine, the main psychoactive ingredient in tobacco, stimulates dopamine (DA) function, increasing DA neuronal activity and DA release. DA is involved in both motor control and in the rewarding and reinforcing effects of nicotine; however, the complete understanding of its molecular mechanisms is yet to be attained. Substantial evidence indicates that the reinforcing properties of drugs of abuse, including nicotine, can be affected by the nitric oxide (NO) system, which may act by modulating central dopaminergic function. In this study, using single cell recordings in vivo coupled with microiontophoresis and microdialysis in freely moving animals, the role of NO signaling on the hyperacti…
