CHARACTERIZATION OF MOLECULAR ISOFORMS AND ROLE OF THE SURVIVAL MOTOR NEURON (SMN) IN MOTOR NEURONS DISEASES.
2014
Effect of substrate improvement on optimising biogas yield from anaerobic digestion
2014
Masteroppgave i fornybar energi ENE 500 Universitetet i Agder 2014 The anaerobic digestion process involves the decomposition of the organic matter to yield biogas; gas that is mainly composed of methane and carbon dioxide with traces of some other gases. This process is used for different purposes including municipal waste treatment, wastewater treatment, fertilizer production, and farm wastes disposal as well as energy production. It is accomplished in three main stages; hydrolysis, acidogenesis and methanogenesis with each of the stages achieved by specific microorganisms that are active in limited ranges of operational and environmental conditions. These conditions are controlled to ach…
Requirement for the Proton-Pumping NADH Dehydrogenase I of Escherichia Coli in Respiration of NADH to Fumarate and Its Bioenergetic Implications
1997
In Escherichia coli the expression of the nuo genes encoding the proton pumping NADH dehydrogenase I is stimulated by the presence of fumarate during anaerobic respiration. The regulatory sites required for the induction by fumarate, nitrate and O2 are located at positions around –309, –277, and downstream of –231 bp, respectively, relative to the transcriptional-start site. The fumarate regulator has to be different from the O2 and nitrate regulators ArcA and NarL. For growth by fumarate respiration, the presence of NADH dehydrogenase I was essential, in contrast to aerobic or nitrate respiration which used preferentially NADH dehydrogenase II. The electron transport from NADH to fumarate …
New quality regulations versus established nursing home practice: a qualitative study
2012
Published version of an article from the journal: BMC Nursing. Also available from Bio Med Central:http://dx.doi.org/10.1186/1472-6955-11-7 Open Access Background Western governments have initiated reforms to improve the quality of care for nursing home residents. Most of these reforms encompass the use of regulations and national quality indicators. In the Norwegian context, these regulations comprise two pages of text that are easy to read and understand. They focus particularly on residents’ rights to plan their day-to-day life in nursing homes. However, the research literature indicates that the implementation of the new regulations, particularly if they aim to change nursing practice, …
Knowledge, safety, and teamwork: a qualitative study on the experiences of anaesthesiologists and nurse anaesthetists working in the preanaesthesia a…
2022
Abstract Background The preanaesthesia assessment clinic (PAC) has been shown to contribute to safe anaesthesia assessment in hospitals. In the PAC, patients are assessed with an interview and can also ask relevant questions about anaesthesia. The intention is to ensure that patients are comprehensively prepared for the surgery and hospital stay. Although earlier studies have assessed the effects of PAC, attitudes and satisfaction of the healthcare personnel working in PAC remain unknown. Thus, this study aimed to examine the experiences of anaesthesiologists and nurse anaesthetists working in PACs as well as to explore barriers and facilitators in this context. Methods A descriptive qualit…
The Gender Gap in Online Shopping in Turkey
2022
The main aim of this study is to explore the gender gap in online shopping in the Turkish population. The gender gap in internet use and online shopping is investigated using the results of annual national surveys on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Usage in Households and by Individuals by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat). The study results reveal that females in Turkey tend to be on the wrong side of the digital divide. Even though internet use has increased over the years in the Turkish population, there remains a significant and persistent gap between females and males in internet use and online shopping. It is also found that there are differences between fema…
Malocclusion characteristics amongst individuals with autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review and meta‑analysis
2022
Abstract Background To estimate the prevalence of malocclusion in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and to assess the relationship between ASD and malocclusion. Methods We searched electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, Embase, SciELO LILACS, Proquest, OpenGrey and Google Scholar. There were no language or publication dates restrictions. Two researchers independently performed selection, data extraction and quality assessment. Quality assessment and risk of bias were evaluated through the Newcastle–Ottawa scale and ROBINS-E tool. Meta-analyses using random effect models were used to estimate pooled measures of prevalence of malocclusion chara…
The planar two-body problem for spheroids and disks
2021
We outline a new method suggested by Conway (2016) for solving the two-body problem for solid bodies of spheroidal or ellipsoidal shape. The method is based on integrating the gravitational potential of one body over the surface of the other body. When the gravitational potential can be analytically expressed (as for spheroids or ellipsoids), the gravitational force and mutual gravitational potential can be formulated as a surface integral instead of a volume integral, and solved numerically. If the two bodies are infinitely thin disks, the surface integral has an analytical solution. The method is exact as the force and mutual potential appear in closed-form expressions, and does not invol…
Synthesis and antioxidant evaluation of novel silybin analogues
2006
In this work, we evaluated the antioxidant properties of the eight novel silybin analogues for their capacity to scavenge free radicals including superoxide anion radicals and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals in vitro. Compound 7d demonstrated an excellent antioxidant effect in scavenging superoxide anion free radical with an IC50 value of 26.5 microM, while the IC50 of quercetin (the reference compound) was 38.1 microM. Compounds 7b, 7e, 7h showed certain scavenging activities for both types of free radicals.
Anion Recognition by a Bioactive Diureidodecalin Anionophore: Solid-State, Solution, and Computational Studies
2018
Recent work has identified a bis-(p-nitrophenyl)ureidodecalin anion carrier as a promising candidate for biomedical applications, showing good activity for chloride transport in cells yet almost no cytotoxicity. To underpin further development of this and related compounds, a detailed structural and binding investigation is reported. Crystal structures of the transporter as five solvates confirm the diaxial positioning of urea groups while revealing a degree of conformational flexibility. Structures of complexes with Cl−, Br−, NO3 −, SO4 2− and AcO−, supported by computational studies, show how the binding site can adapt to accommodate these anions. 1H NMR binding studies revealed exception…
