Metallurgical Phenomena Modelling in Friction Stir Welding of Aluminium Alloys: Analytical vs. Neural Network Based Approaches
2008
In this paper, the metallurgical phenomena occurring in friction stir welding processes of AA6082-T6 and AA7075-T6 aluminum alloys are investigated. In particular, to predict the local values of the average grain size, either a simple analytical expression depending on a few material constants or a properly trained neural network is linked to the finite element model of the process. The utilized tools, which take as inputs the local values of strain, strain rate, and temperature, were developed starting from experimental data and numerical results.
On the improvement of material formability in SPIF operation through tool stirring action
2012
Single-point incremental forming (SPIF) is a quite new sheet-forming process which offers the possibility to deform complex parts without dedicated dies using a single-point tool and a standard three-axis CNC machine. The process mechanics enables higher strains with respect to traditional sheet-forming processes, but particular attention must be given to the maximum forming angle. In this paper, a new approach is proposed to enhance the material formability through a localized sheet heating as a consequence of the friction work caused by elevated tool rotational speeds. AA1050-O, AA1050-H24, and AA6082-T6 were utilized, and the reached temperatures were recorded by thermocouples, fixed to …
Study of the oxidation mechanisms of Plutonium
2022
Oxidation is a key point when applied to a material such as plutonium. It is essential to understand the oxidation mechanisms in order to predict and prevent catastrophic oxidation, thus managing the reprocessing cost. The originality of this work lies in the coupling of different experimental techniques : in-situ X-ray diffraction, Photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS), FIB-SEM, Raman spectrometry and X-ray absorption (EXAFS) with numerical techniques : CALPHAD and Reverse Monte Carlo, in order to determine the oxidation mechanisms of the studied alloy : -phase stabilised PuGa 1 at%.Study of oxidation of this alloy at different temperatures and oxygen partial pressures showed the oxidation kin…
Dreamless Sleep, the Embodied Mind, and Consciousness
2017
One of the major debates in classical Indian philosophy concerned whether consciousness is present or absent in dreamless sleep. The philosophical schools of Advaita Vedānta and Yoga maintained that consciousness is present in dreamless sleep, whereas the Nyāya school maintained that it is absent. Consideration of this debate, especially the reasoning used by Advaita Vedānta to rebut the Nyāya view, calls into question the standard neuroscientific way of operationally defining consciousness as “that which disappears in dreamless sleep and reappears when we wake up or dream.” The Indian debate also offers new resources for contemporary philosophy of mind. At the same time, findings from cogn…
