Vegetative growth, fruit yields, and dry matter partitioning within above-ground components were assessed during three growing seasons for trees of an early ripening peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch `Flordaprince' on GF 677 rootstock) trained either to a free standing central leader (930 trees/ha) or to Y shape (1850 trees/ha). Individual trees trained to central leader gave higher fruit yield, had a significantly greater leaf area and accumulated more dry mass in above-ground components per tree than Y shape trees. Abstract Three different water regimes were applied on young pot-grown olive trees of the cultivars Leccino and Racioppella, amounting to 100% (treatment T100), 50% (treatment T50) and 25% (treatment T25) of water transpiration as determined by pot weight. During the two-year trial the following parameters were measured: midday stem water potential, shoots growth, total leaf area per tree, dry matter accumulation and partitioning in different parts of the plant (root, wood, leaves and fruits). Aim of this study was to understand the allocation of biomass into different canopy and root components and to measure the stem area index and its partitioning by cladode functionality (age), for fruiting Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) Gialla trees, spaced 6x5 m apart and trained to a globe. The net primary productivity (NPP), calculated taking into account dry weight gain for above-ground vegetative components of OFI trees was 3.6 t C ha –1 . Abstract In January 2002 the Cape Verde region in tropical West Africa was hit by an exceptionally heavy precipitation event. Rain rates of up to 116 mm (48 h)−1 caused harmful impacts on the local population. The rainfall was triggered by a series of two upper-level disturbances penetrating from the extratropics to the West African coast. Seasonal development of leaf area, leaf area index (LAI), dry matter, and carbohydrate content were measured from harvest 1992 to harvest 1993 in above-ground components of `Flordaprince' peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] trees grafted on GF 677 (Prunus persica × Prunus amygdalus) and MrS 2/5 (Prunus cerasifera free pollinated) rootstocks, which widely differ in vigor. Retention of six aroma compounds has been studied after dehydration of ternary mixtures of aroma water and beta-cyclodextrin. A maximal retention of a mole of aroma per mole of beta-cyclodextrin has been observed for five of the aroma compounds, whereas retention of benzyl alcohol can be twice as high. Retention of a mixture of aroma compounds has also been studied. It has been noted that when volatile compounds compete for the same binding sites on beta-cyclodextrin, ethyl hexanoate, 2-methylbutyric acid, and benzyl alcohol are, respectively, better retained than ethyl propionate, hexanoic acid, and hexanol. PREVIOUSLY, a high nucleo-cytoplasmic concentration gradient of sodium was found in rat liver and other tissues1,2. Since the concentration of potassium also was higher in the nucleus than in the cytoplasm, about 500 µequiv./g dry weight of anions should exist in the nucleus if the assumption is correct that nucleic acids and basic proteins approximately neutralize each other. This communication presents data which demonstrate a high concentration of chloride in the nucleus of the rat-liver cell.
