Levels, fingerprint and daily intake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in bread baked using wood as fuel

Concentrations, fingerprint and daily intake of 16 PAHs in 15 bread samples baked using wood as fuel are examined in this work. Analysis was performed by GC/MS after saponification of the samples and clean up of the extract. The total concentration of the 16 analytes varies from 6 to 230 microg/kg on dry weight (d.w.). The better extraction procedure was estimated by analyzing test-samples and using different extraction methods. Additionally, for every analyzed sample, the extraction yield has been determined by the use of surrogate standards. Extraction yields were never less than 77% and in most cases almost 100%. Chloroanisoles in soils and earthworms

One important group of metabolites of chlorophenols in Finnish soils is their methylation products, i.e. chloroanisoles. Bioaccumulation of chloroanisoles into the biomass of earthworms was studied both in laboratory and by taking earthworm samples from contaminated soils. Concentrations of these compounds in the soils were also analysed. In the laboratory experiment, concentrations of 2,3,4,6-tetrachloroanisole (2346-TeCA) and pentachloroanisole (PeCA) were high in earthworms 1 week after introduction (approx. 50 μ/g fat). Flame-burned stainless steel wire spheres as carriers ofZymomonas mobilis cells and extracellular levansucrase

In the present work, the use of flame-burned WS as carriers of Z. mobilis and extracellular levansucrase and the effect of the cell fixation method by dehydration on system productivity were investigated. Lyophilization and convective drying of Z. mobilis biomass at 30°C to a moisture content of 10–14% gave the best results for the repeated batch fermentations of a sucrose medium to obtain levan and ethanol. Significant correlation between the product formation and the concentration of free cells in the fermentation medium was established. Nonstoichiometric silica mask to fabricate reverse proton-exchange waveguides in lithium niobate crystals

Producing channel waveguides requires a photolithographic mask, but the standard technique of using thermally evaporated metal films for proton exchange has proved to be unsuitable for withstanding the rather aggressive process of reverse proton exchange. We report the fabrication of a nonstoichiometric silica mask by ion-plating plasma-assisted deposition. This mask is strong enough to resist both direct and reverse proton exchange and is also compatible with anisotropic dry etching for patterning the mask and with electric field poling. Our technique is a practical alternative to the use of SiO2 sputtered masks.

Growth and food utilisation of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed low-fat herring and dry diets enriched with fish oil

Two-year-old rainbow trout (initial weight 695 g) were fed for 15 weeks low-fat Baltic herring diets either with or without lipid enrichment. For comparison, similar groups of trout were fed dry pellets with and without top-dressing with fish oil. Inclusion of lipid increased growth rate in a similar manner for both types of diets. For the herring-based diet, increased lipid resulted in increased dry matter consumption but for the dry diet, feed efficiency (dry weight growth per dry weight food consumption) was improved by channelling more nutrients to lipid deposition. Abstract Most of the undesired whirling motions of rotating machines can be efficiently reduced by supporting journal boxes elastically and controlling their movement by viscous dampers or by dry friction surfaces normal to the shaft axis, which rub against the frame. Abstract Rain is not uniform in time and space in semiarid areas and its distribution is very important for the runoff process. Hydrological studies usually divide rainfall into events. However, defining rain events is complicated, and rain characteristics vary depending on how the events are delimited. Choosing a minimum inter-event time (MIT) is a commonly used criterion. The concentrations of 21 perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs: C4-C14, C16, C18 carboxylates, C4, C6-C8 and C10 sulfonates and C8 sulfonamide) were determined in influent, effluent and sludge from 16 different sewage treatment plants (STPs) located in the Ebro (6), Guadalquivir (5), Jucar (2) and Llobregat (3) Rivers, in two consecutive years (2010 and 2011). The analytes were extracted by solid phase extraction (SPE) and determined by Liquid Chromatography triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (LC-QqQ-MS).
