Methane production from maize in Finland – Screening for different maize varieties and plant parts
2012
Abstract The objective of the study was to determine how the harvest time and maize variety (12 varieties) affects the methane yield and dry matter yield per hectare in southern Finland (Piikkio) and in Central Finland (Laukaa). The specific methane yields and methane yields per hectare were also determined for different plant parts (stem, leaves and cobs). The methane yield per hectare varied from 2130 to 9170 m 3 ha −1 . The methane yields per hectare were ∼50% lower in Laukaa than in Piikkio due to a shorter growing season and lower total solid (TS) yields. TS yields were on average 16.7 and 15.5 Mg ha −1 in Piikkio and 8.7 and 6.8 Mg ha −1 in Laukaa in 2007 and 2008, respectively. The …
Ejaculation Disorders in Male Patients with Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Prevalence
2021
PURPOSE: Ejaculatory dysfunction (EjD) and erectile dysfunction after cancer treatment are clinically important complications, but their exact prevalence by various kinds of cancer site and type of treatment is unknown. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the available evidence and provide pooled estimates for prevalence of EjD and erectile dysfunction in relation to all cancer sites and identify characteristics associated with EjD in cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of cross-sectional and case-control studies. We searched 4 electronic databases (Medline®, CINAHL, PsychInfo and Embase®) until July 22, 2…
Control of the ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activity by the chloroplastic glutathione pool.
2014
The CO2-fixing activity of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase depends on the redox state of its cysteines. Disulfides like cystamine or 5,5'-dithio-bis(2-nitrobenzoic acid), but not oxidized glutathione, switch the enzyme to the inactive oxidized form. Conversely, thiols like cysteamine, cysteine, dithiotreitol or 2-mercaptoethanol, but not reduced glutathione, recover enzymatic activity after a previous oxidation. Direct regulation of the carboxylase activity by the chloroplastic glutathione pool is hindered by kinetic barriers impeding access to the critical residues. However, reduced glutathione can drive the recovery of activity by means of minute amounts of smaller interme…
Ekskurs XI. Sprofanowana świątynia (Ez 8,1-18) i dolina suchych kości (Ez 37,1-14) w świetle retoryki hebrajskiej
2021

Effects of rootstock vigour and in-row spacing on stem and root growth, conformation and dry-matter distribution of young apple trees
2003
The effects of M.9 and MM.106 rootstocks and in-row spacing (0.4, 0.7, and 1 m) on the vegetative behaviour of three-year-old apple (Malus domestica Borkh) trees were studied. Analysis of digital i...
Agronomical and postharvest evaluation of the essential oils of Sicilian rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) biotypes
2019
Rosmarinus officinalis L. is an aromatic shrub commonly found in the Mediterranean area. It is used in cooking both to add aroma and as a preservative in processed foods. Essential oils of rosemary are used in medicine and in the cosmetics industry due to their considerable biological properties. The yield and quality of rosemary essential oils mainly depend upon the chemo type, environmental conditions and cultivation techniques. The aim of this study was to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of essential oils of wild R. officinalis biotypes found in Sicily using different drying methods. Five types of drying methods were used for the tests: a) shade drying under a r…
Inhibitory Activities of Bovine Macromolecular Whey Proteins on Rotavirus Infections In Vitro and In Vivo
2006
Rotavirus is a major cause of infantile viral gastroenteritis and can lead to severe and sometimes lethal dehydration. Previous studies have shown that breast-fed children are better protected against symptomatic infections, and that the milk fat globule protein lactadherin might be at least partly responsible for this effect. In vitro studies have shown that human lactadherin, in contrast to the bovine ortholog, could inhibit rotavirus infectivity, and that bovine MUC1 and a commercially available bovine macromolecular whey protein (MMWP) fraction proved to be effective. The present work describes the versatility of MMWP against the infection of 2 human intestinal cell lines (Caco-2 and FH…
Effectiveness of salivary stimulation using xylitol-malic acid tablets as coadjuvant treatment in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease : e…
2020
[Background] Besides dental erosion syndrome, other oral syndromes could benefit from the stimulation of sali-vary secretion, in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Our aims is evaluate the improvement of oral extra-oesophageal manifestations in patients with GORD using xylitol–malic acid tablets to stimulate salivary secretion.
Stimulated whole salivary flow rate: The most appropriate technique for assessing salivary flow in Sjogren syndrome
2020
Background We sought to determine the most appropriate method for measuring salivary flow to aid the diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome (SS). Specifically, we compared the unstimulated whole salivary flow rate (UWSFR) with the stimulated whole salivary flow rate (SWSFR). Material and Methods This case-control study comprised one group of 103 patients with SS and a control group of 50 healthy people. We measured the UWSFR and SWSFR in both groups according to the guidelines established by Navacet (1993). Results The UWSFR and SWSFR were significantly lower in the patient group compared with the controls (p < 0.01). Among the participants in the patient group, we found a decreased UWSFR in 84 in…
