Diel feeding habits of juveniles of Mullus surmuletus (Linneo, 1758) in the lagoon of the Stagnone di Marsala (Western Sicily, Italy)

1999

Diet composition, feeding rhythm, gastric evacuation rate and daily ration were investigated in juvenile Mulhis surmuletus (Linneo, 1758). Fish were collected in the lagoon of the Stagnone di Marsala in western Sicily, in July 1995, during a 24 h sampling period. Copepoda, Polychaeta, Amphipoda and Tanaidacea were shown to be the most frequent prey items. The feeding index values showed two different daily feeding times. A unimodal trend in the daily rhythm of food consumption was derived, with a peak in feeding between 1200 and 2000 h. Gastric evacuation in juvenile M. surmuletus is best described by an exponential model, with a gastric evacuation rate R = 0.66 g h-1 (r = 0.88) (T = 24.45 …

Scope For Growth of Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lmk., 1819) in oligotrophic coastal waters (southern Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy)

2008

The ‘scope for growth’ (SFG) tool was used to study the growth performance of cultivated populations of Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lmk., 1819) in an oligotrophic area of the Southern Mediterranean Sea. The study was carried out between 1993 and 1996 by using data from four seasonal oceanographic cruises and from growth experiments. Water samples were collected and analysed for total suspended matter (TSM), particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON), particulate lipids, proteins and carbohydrates and chloropigments. The sum of the carbon equivalents of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids is indicated as the total biopolymeric particulate organic carbon (BPC) and was converted into a …

2023

Grapefruit IntegroPectin isolation via spray drying and via freeze drying: A comparison

2022

The comparison of grapefruit IntegroPectin powders isolated via spray drying and via freeze drying in terms of phenolic content, quantification of the most representative flavonoids (naringin and hesperidin), radical scavenging activity, total protein content and pH of the aqueous solutions provides relevant information. Except for the protein content and the antioxidant power, the two drying methods afford similar pectins. Optimization of the spray drying parameters allowed to maximize the yield of isolated pectin that nearly approached (>95%) the quantitative yield obtained via freeze drying.

Freeze drying versus Spray drying to obtain Grapefruit IntegroPectin powder

Background: IntegroPectin is a new family of citrus pectins of broad biological activity obtained via hydrodynamic cavitation of citrus biowaste carried out in water only. These pectins have already been isolated by freeze drying, a time-consuming and expensive procedure difficult to be scaled up. Since recently the spray drying technique has been greatly appreciated for food and pharmaceutical applications, this work proposes a comparison between Grapefruit IntegroPectin powders isolated via spray drying (SD) and via freeze drying (FD). Methods: A mini Spray Dryer B-290 with B-295 inert loop (Büchi) and a FreeZone 2.5 Liter freeze dry system (Labconco) were used. Dried powders comparison w…

Enhanced Sewage Sludge Drying with a Modified Solar Greenhouse

2022

This work reports the results obtained with an innovative configuration of a closed-static solar greenhouse for sludge drying. The novelty of the solar greenhouse configuration consisted in using a forced ventilation system to provide hot air for sludge drying and the utilization of solar irradiation for energy supply. Wet sewage sludge (97% humidity) was successfully dried up to a residual humidity close to 5% after 25 days during wintertime. The increase of the airflow rate supplied under the sludge bed improved the sludge drying rate. Moreover, the fraction of volatile suspended solids decreased from 70% to 41% after 13 days, indicating that air supply promoted the simultaneous stabiliza…

Experimental Survey on Dry Asphalt Rubber Concrete for Sub-ballast Layers

2012

The railway traffic through a town or near built-up areas causes heavy effects such as noise and vibration on surroundings. In order to minimize the level of these impacts the railway companies with researchers and practitioners seek suitable solutions especially in the field of the rail-track because the main source of the ground borne vibrations and noise is the bad wheel-track contact. In particular, a big effort is addressed to new materials with high mechanical and environmental performance that can be utilized within the sub-ballast layer. This paper presents the results of an experimental survey on the potential application of Dry Asphalt Rubber Concrete (DARC) in sub-ballast layers …
