Fragmentation during Rock Falls: Two Italian Case Studies of Hard and Soft Rocks

2008

In recent years, rock fall phenomena in Italy have received considerable attention for risk mitigation through in situ observations and experimental data. This paper reports the study conducted at Camaldoli Hill, in the urban area of Naples, and at Monte Pellegrino, Palermo, Italy. The rocks involved are volcanic Neapolitan yellow tuff (NYT) in the former area and dolomitic limestone in the latter. Both rocks, even though with different strength characteristics, have shown a significant tendency towards rock fragmentation during run out. This behavior was first investigated by comparing the volumes of removable blocks on the cliff faces (V 0) and fallen blocks on the slopes (V f). It was as…

Forward logistic regression for earth-flow landslide susceptibility assessment in the Platani river basin (southern Sicily, Italy)

2013

Forward logistic regression has allowed us to derive an earth-flow susceptibility model for the Tumarrano river basin, which was defined by modeling the statistical relationships between an archive of 760 events and a set of 20 predictors. For each landslide in the inventory, a landslide identification point (LIP) was automatically produced as corresponding to the highest point along the boundary of the landslide polygons, and unstable conditions were assigned to cells at a distance up to 8 m. An equal number of stable cells (out of landslides) was then randomly extracted and appended to the LIPs to prepare the dataset for logistic regression. A model building strategy was applied to enlarg…

G-CLASS: geosynchronous radar for water cycle science – orbit selection and system design

2019

The mission geosynchronous – continental land atmosphere sensing system (G-CLASS) is designed to study thediurnal water cycle, using geosynchronous radar. Although the water cycle is vital to human society, processes on timescalesless than a day are very poorly observed from space. G-CLASS, using C-band geosynchronous radar, could transform this. Itsscience objectives address intense storms and high resolution weather prediction, and significant diurnal processes such assnow melt and soil moisture change, with societal impacts including agriculture, water resource management, flooding, andlandslides. Secondary objectives relate to ground motion observations for earthquake, volcano, and subs…

Muntlig interaktion på svensklektioner hos högstadieelever i mellersta Finland

2015

Arodslimību skaita atkarība no darba vides riska faktoru iedarbības SIA ,,KREISS'' starptautisko kravas pārvadājumu autovadītājiem"

2017

Pētījums sastāv no 4 daļām.

Effect of climate change on landslide behaviour

2010

Landslides represent a major threat to human life, constructed facilities and infrastructure in most mountainous regions of the world. Considering future climate scenarios and modified precipitation patterns, the landslide activity will most probably change too. It is expected that shallow slips and debris flows will take place more frequently as a consequence of more extreme weather events. For the local scale of Switzerland for example, there is no increasing trend visible for the total rainfall amount, but an increasing tendency is observed for stormy events and their intensity, especially in fall, spring and winter. Some precipitation is expected to fall as rain instead of snow at highe…

Establishing a threshold for rainfall‐induced landslides by a kinetic energy–duration relationship

2020

Many investigators have attempted to define the threshold of landslide failure, that is, the level of the selected climatic variable above which a rainfall-induced landslide occurs. Intensity–duration (I–d) relationships are the most common type of empirical thresholds proposed in the literature for predicting landslide occurrence induced by rainfall. Recent studies propose the use of the kinetic power per unit volume of rainfall (J m−2 mm−1) to quantify the threshold of landslides induced by rainfall. In this paper, the relationship between rainfall duration and kinetic power corresponding to landslides triggered by rain was used to propose a new approach to define the threshold for predic…
