A Novel Method of Distance Measurement Based on Pulse Position Modulation and Synchronization of Chaotic Signals Using Ultrasonic Radar Systems
2009
This paper deals with a novel method of transmission and receipt of a signal based on both the property of two chaotic systems generating the same chaotic signal when they are synchronized and the property of pulse position modulation (PPM) to be insensitive to the distortions of the transmission channel. The method is discussed in the context of ultrasonic radar systems, in which the transmitter and receiver, which consist of ultrasonic sensors, are near each other, and the received signal consists of the transmitted signal reflected by an obstacle. A reference sinusoidal signal is superimposed to a chaotic signal generated by a master chaotic system, and the whole signal is modulated acco…
A photovoltaic system suitable for the battery pack charging of an electrically power assisted velocipede
2012
The paper describes the designing, sizing, realization and setting up of a complete system suitable for the management of an electrically power assisted velocipede using a photovoltaic module for the charging of the batteries. In the work an overview on the sustainable mobility needs and on the commercial electrically power assisted velocipedes is presented and the "Ecolapa" prototype, set up in the SDELab laboratory of Palermo University, is precisely described underlining the designing, implementation and setting up phases of the photovoltaic charging system settled up on the velocipede. Moreover tests oriented on the setting up of the whole system and validation tests on the prototype ar…
DEMO: Unconventional WiFi-ZigBee communications without gateways
2014
Nowadays, the overcrowding of ISM bands is becoming an evident limitation for the performance and widespread usage of 802.11 and 802.15.4 technologies. In this demo, we prove that it is possible to opportunistically exploit the inter-technology interference between 802.11 and 802.15.4 to build an unconventional low-rate communication channel and signalling protocol, devised to improve the performance of each contending technology. Differently from previous solutions, inter-technology communications do not require the deployment of a gateway with two network interfaces, but can be activated (when needed) directly between two heterogeneous nodes, e.g. a WiFi node and a ZigBee node. This capab…
Hybrid Vapor-Solution Sequentially Deposited Mixed-Halide Perovskite Solar Cells
2020
The recent sky-rocketing performance of perovskite solar cells has triggered a strong interest in further upgrading the fabrication techniques to meet the scalability requirements of the photovoltaic industry. The integration of vapor-deposition into the solution process in a sequential fashion can boost the uniformity and reproducibility of the perovskite solar cells. Besides, mixed-halide perovskites have exhibited outstanding crystallinity as well as higher stability compared with iodide-only perovskite. An extensive study was carried out to identify a reproducible process leading to highly crystalline perovskite films that when integrated into solar cells exhibited high power conversion…
Global aerosol modeling with MADE3 (v3.0) in EMAC (based on v2.53): model description and evaluation
2019
Recently, the aerosol microphysics submodel MADE3 (Modal Aerosol Dynamics model for Europe, adapted for global applications, third generation) was introduced as a successor to MADE and MADE-in. It includes nine aerosol species and nine lognormal modes to represent aerosol particles of three different mixing states throughout the aerosol size spectrum. Here, we describe the implementation of the most recent version of MADE3 into the ECHAM/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) general circulation model, including a detailed evaluation of a 10-year aerosol simulation with MADE3 as part of EMAC. We compare simulation output to station network measurements of near-surface aerosol component mass con…
Hybrid Observer for Indoor Localization with Random Time-of-Arrival Measurments
2018
In this work an indoor position estimation algorithm will be proposed. The position will be measured by means of a sensor network composed by fixed beacons placed on the indoor environment and a mobile beacon mounted on the object to be tracked. The mobile beacon communicates with all the fixed beacons by means of ultra wide-band signals, and the distance between them is computed by means of time of flight techniques. Moreover, inertial measurements will be used when the position measurements are not available. Two main problems will be considered in the proposed architecture: the fact that the beacons work with a lower update rate than the IMU, and that the mobile beacon can comunicate wit…
Gatherer: an environmental monitoring application based on IPv6 using wireless sensor networks
2013
In this paper, we present an environmental monitoring application based on IPv6 using wireless sensor networks. We show the guidelines to connect this network to internet using the 6LowPAN standard with a real prototype in the evolution of the Internet of Things. We assign a unique IPv6 address to the different nodes motes of the network. Gatherer is based on TinyOS using IPv6 and UDP protocols and allows the data gathering of temperature and relative humidity from the different motes, requesting specific data from individual motes when required, increasing the accuracy of the measures. We compare the performance of our IPv6-based proposed application against others and show the benefits of…
Performance Study of Non-beaconed and Beacon-Enabled Modes in IEEE 802.15.4 under Bluetooth Interference
2008
The IEEE 802.15.4 protocol is a flexible technology with great potential for wireless sensor networks applications. The standard distinguishes two network modes; beacon-enabled and nonbeacon-enabled. In this paper, the performance study of beaconed and non-beaconed modes of IEEE 802.15.4 is evaluated using on site PER measurements. The tests are carryout in an urban outdoor environment with commercial available equipment. Likewise, the impact of Bluetooth interference over IEEE 802.15.4 modes is evaluated. The results show that Bluetooth interference and the mode selected have effects over the PER. Furthermore, for distances between 3 to 10 meters the PER doesn't show significance distance …
A Multisensor Proposal for Wireless Sensor Networks
2008
Every sensor node in a wireless sensor network (WSN) has a microcontroller, a transmitter/receiver and a sensor. It is able to acquire data from specific point in a real environment and transmit it through the WSN. Sometimes it is useful to gather different type of data from the same place in order to obtain a final result. In the related literature, very few works are about sensing different parameters using a unique sensor. In this paper we propose a Wireless IP multisensor that is able to gather several types of data from the environment and transmit the result of their combination. Our proposal decision has being mainly based on its development costs, its expansion capacity and its flex…
Resultados de la estrategia farmacoinvasiva y de la angioplastia primaria en la reperfusión del infarto con elevación del segmento ST. Estudio con re…
2011
[EN] Introduction and objectives: Pharmacoinvasive strategy represents an attractive alternative to primary angioplasty. Using cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging we compared the left ventricular outcome of the pharmacoinvasive strategy and primary angioplasty for the reperfusion of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Methods: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance was performed 1 week and 6 months after infarction in two consecutive cohorts of patients included in a prospective university hospital ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction registry. During the period 2004-2006, 151 patients were treated with pharmacoinvasive strategy (thrombolysis followed by routine non-immediate…
