Synergy of spatial frequency and orientation bandwidth in texture segregation

Defining target textures by increased bandwidths in spatial frequency and orientation, we observed strong cue combination effects in a combined texture figure detection and discrimination task. Performance for double-cue targets was better than predicted by independent processing of either cue and even better than predicted from linear cue integration. Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in an Italian woman.

Summary As of May, 2002, 128 cases of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob (vCJD) disease have been identified in the UK, France, and Ireland. We report the first case of vCJD in Italy. The patient was a young Italian woman who had never travelled to a country with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). She was diagnosed by cerebral MRI and western blot analysis of tonsil biopsy samples. The results of these analyses suggest that vCJD in continental Europe and the UK share genetic, clinical, and neuroimaging features, with similar western blot patterns. To identify factors influencing the differential pain pathogenesis in peritoneal endometriosis (pEM) and peritoneal carcinomatosis in ovarian cancer (pOC), we undertook an experimental study. Tissue samples of 18 patients with pEM, 15 patients with pOC, and 15 unaffected peritoneums as controls were collected during laparoscopy or laparotomy. Immunohistochemical stainings were conducted to identify nerve fibers and neurotrophins in the tissue samples. Background/methods At a consensus meeting in August 2018, pediatricians and dermatologists from German-speaking countries discussed the therapeutic strategy for the treatment of pediatric patients with type I and II hereditary angioedema due to C1 inhibitor deficiency (HAE-C1-INH) for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, taking into account the current marketing approval status. HAE-C1-INH is a rare disease that usually presents during childhood or adolescence with intermittent episodes of potentially life-threatening angioedema.
