Magnons at low excitations: Observation of incoherent coupling to a bath of two-level systems

Collective magnetic excitation modes, magnons, can be coherently coupled to microwave photons in the single excitation limit. This allows for access to quantum properties of magnons and opens up a range of applications in quantum information processing, with the intrinsic magnon linewidth representing the coherence time of a quantum resonator. Our measurement system consists of a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere and a three-dimensional (3D) microwave cavity at temperatures and excitation powers typical for superconducting quantum circuit experiments. A comparison of compatible, finite, and inductive graph properties

Abstract In the theory of hyperedge-replacement grammars and languages, one encounters three types of graph properties that play an important role in proving decidability and structural results. The three types are called compatible, finite, and inductive graph properties. All three of them cover graph properties that are well-behaved with respect to certain operations on hypergraphs. In this paper, we show that the three notions are essentially equivalent. Consequently, three lines of investigation in the theory of hyperedge replacement - so far separated - merge into one.

The usual methods of spectral clasification, equivalent widths of Balmer lines or photometric calibrations are not suitable for the determination of the astrophysical parameters of the underlying star in Be-type objects. The spectrum is distorted by the circumstellar envelope lines, while the contribution of the envelope continuum radiation contaminates the photometric indices.
A New Coupling Solution for G3-PLC Employment in MV Smart Grids

This paper proposes a new coupling solution for transmitting narrowband multicarrier power line communication (PLC) signals over medium voltage (MV) power lines. The proposed system is based on an innovative PLC coupling principle, patented by the authors, which exploits the capacitive divider embedded in voltage detecting systems (VDS) already installed inside the MV switchboard. Zero viscosity limit of the Oseen equations in a channel

Oseen equations in the channel are considered. We give an explicit solution formula in terms of the inverse heat operators and of projection operators. This solution formula is used for the analysis of the behavior of the Oseen equations in the zero viscosity limit. We prove that the solution of Oseen equations converges in W1,2 to the solution of the linearized Euler equations outside the boundary layer and to the solution of the linearized Prandtl equations inside the boundary layer. © 2001 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

Observation of Very Narrow Linewidths in the Fluorescence Excitation Spectra of Single Conjugated Polymer Chains at 1.2 K

Fluorescence emission and excitation spectra of single poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] polymer molecules embedded in poly(methylmethacrylate) have been recorded at 1.2 K. The ubiquitous spectral diffusion causes large variations in the spectral shape and apparent linewidth in the emission spectra. Nevertheless, we find very narrow (approximately 0.1 cm(-1)) purely electronic zero-phonon lines in the excitation spectra, which are 2 orders of magnitude smaller than previous estimates of the homogeneous linewidth. These results complement the molecular description of the low energy transitions in conjugated polymers.
