Emulation as an Accurate Alternative to Interpolation in Sampling Radiative Transfer Codes

2018

Computationally expensive radiative transfer models (RTMs) are widely used to realistically reproduce the light interaction with the earth surface and atmosphere. Because these models take long processing time, the common practice is to first generate a sparse look-up table (LUT) and then make use of interpolation methods to sample the multidimensional LUT input variable space. However, the question arise whether common interpolation methodsperform most accurate. As an alternative to interpolation, this paper proposes to use emulation, i.e., approximating the RTM output by means of the statistical learning. Two experiments were conducted to assess the accuracy in delivering spectral outputs…

Low-Power Wide-Area Networks for Sustainable IoT

2019

Low-power wide-area (LPWA) networks are attracting extensive attention because of their abilities to offer low-cost and massive connectivity to Internet of Things (IoT) devices distributed over wide geographical areas. This article provides a brief overview on the existing LPWA technologies and useful insights to aid the large-scale deployment of LPWA networks. Particularly, we first review the currently competing candidates of LPWA networks, such as narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) and long range (LoRa), in terms of technical fundamentals and large-scale deployment potential. Then we present two implementation examples on LPWA networks. By analyzing the field-test results, we identify several chall…

Efficient and accurate monitoring of the depth information in a Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network based surveillance

2017

International audience; Abstract—Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN) is a promising technology capturing rich multimedia data like audio and video, which can be useful to monitor an environment under surveillance. However, many scenarios in real time monitoring requires 3D depth information. In this research work, we propose to use the disparity map that is computed from two or multiple images, in order to monitor the depth information in an object or event under surveillance using WMSN. Our system is based on distributed wireless sensors allowing us to notably reduce the computational time needed for 3D depth reconstruction, thus permitting the success of real time solutions. Each pa…

Capture Aware Sequential Waterfilling for LoraWAN Adaptive Data Rate

2020

LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) is emerging as an attractive network infrastructure for ultra low power Internet of Things devices. Even if the technology itself is quite mature and specified, the currently deployed wireless resource allocation strategies are still coarse and based on rough heuristics. This paper proposes an innovative "sequential waterfilling" strategy for assigning Spreading Factors (SF) to End-Devices (ED). Our design relies on three complementary approaches: i) equalize the Time-on-Air of the packets transmitted by the system's EDs in each spreading factor's group; ii) balance the spreading factors across multiple access gateways, and iii) keep into account the c…

Generation of energy selective excitations in quantum hall edge states

2011

We operate an on-demand source of single electrons in high perpendicular magnetic fields up to 30T, corresponding to a filling factor below 1/3. The device extracts and emits single charges at a tunable energy from and to a two-dimensional electron gas, brought into well defined integer and fractional quantum Hall (QH) states. It can therefore be used for sensitive electrical transport studies, e.g. of excitations and relaxation processes in QH edge states.

The temporal analogue of diffractive couplers

2020

International audience; Based on the space-time duality of light, we numerically demonstrate that temporal dispersion grating couplers can generate from a single pulse an array of replicas of equal amplitude. The phase-only profile of the temporal grating is optimized by a genetic algorithm that takes into account the optoelectronic bandwidth limitations of the setup.

Inhibition of FTSJ1, a tryptophan tRNA-specific 2’-O-methyltransferase as possible mechanism to readthrough premature termination codons (UGAs) of th…

2022

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive genetic disease caused by mutations in the CFTR gene, coding for the CFTR chloride channel. About 10 % of the mutations affecting the CFTR gene are "stop" mutations, which generate a Premature Termination Codon (PTC), thus resulting in the synthesis of a truncated CFTR protein. A way to bypass PTC relies on ribosome readthrough, that is the capacity of the ribosome to skip a PTC, thus generating a full-length protein. “TRIDs” are molecules exerting ribosome readthrough and for some of them the mechanism of action is still under debate. By in silico analysis as well as in vitro studies, we investigate a possible mechanism of action (MOA) by whic…

An E-plane EBG waveguide for dispersion compensated transmission of short pulses

2007

The resolution of radar applications can significantly suffer from pulse broadening along the propagation in homogeneous hollow waveguides. The latter occurs due to the strongly dispersive nature of the fast waves in the waveguides. A low-cost solution to this problem is here proposed, employing an EBG type of waveguide, compatible with traditional E-plane fabrication techniques. By means of an example, here we demonstrate the reduction of the pulse spreading as it propagates along this type of waveguide.

Transient Electrical Behaviour of the TF Superconducting Coils of Divertor Tokamak Test Facility During a Fast Discharge

2022

The paper is focused on the electromagnetic analysis of the Toroidal Field (TF) superconducting coils of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) when electrical transients occur in the TF coils system: for example, during the operations of the Fast Discharge Units (FDUs) and considering also, the simultaneous occurrence of a fault condition. During the FDU intervention, a transient voltage excitation lasting few microseconds occurs at the TF coil terminals and it electrically stresses the insulations of TF coils itsef. To investigate the voltage distribution across, inside and between different Double Pancakes (DPs) of each TF coil, a lumped parameters circuital model has been developed an…
