The role of environmental factors and medium composition on bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS) production by Enterococcus mundtii strains

2008

Bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS)-producers Enterococcus mundtii WGWT1-1A, WGW11.2, WGJ20.1, WGJ40.2 and WGK53 from raw material origin were subjected to a study for the characterization of antimicrobial compound production under several growth conditions, including different cultivation media, growth temperatures, pHs, different concentrations and sources of nitrogen compounds, carbohydrates and other nutritional factors, and in the presence of different percentages of ethanol and NaCl. The five E. mundtii strains showed different behaviors. However, in all cases, MRS and sour dough bacteria (SDB) were found as the optimal media for BLIS production. In general, the higher BLIS …

Quantum Real - Time Turing Machine

2001

The principles of quantum computation differ from the principles of classical computation very much. Quantum analogues to the basic constructions of the classical computation theory, such as Turing machine or finite 1-way and 2-ways automata, do not generalize deterministic ones. Their capabilities are incomparable. The aim of this paper is to introduce a quantum counterpart for real - time Turing machine. The recognition of a special kind of language, that can't be recognized by a deterministic real - time Turing machine, is shown.

Specific sequence elements in the 5′ untranslated regions of rbcL and atpB gene mRNAs stabilize transcripts in the chloroplast of Chlamydomonas reinh…

2001

Using a series of point mutations in chimeric reporter gene constructs consisting of the 5' regions of the Chlamydomonas chloroplast rbcL or atpB genes fused 5' to the coding sequence of the bacterial uidA (GUS) gene, RNA-stabilizing sequence elements were identified in vivo in the 5' untranslated regions (5' UTRs) of transcripts of the chloroplast genes rbcL and atpB in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. In chimeric rbcL 5' UTR:GUS transcripts, replacement of single nucleotides in the 10-nt sequence 5'-AUUUCCGGAC-3', extending from positions +38 to +47 relative to the transcripts' 5' terminus, shortened transcript longevity and led to a reduction in transcript abundance of more than 95%. A similar…

Changes in the 5?-untranslated region of the rbcL gene accelerate transcript degradation more than 50-fold in the chloroplast of Chlamydomonas reinha…

2003

Using uidA (beta-glucuronidase; GUS) reporter gene constructs, the 5'-untranslated region (UTR) of the Chlamydomonas chloroplast rbcL gene was screened by deletion and mutational analysis for the presence of a promoter element that previous studies implied to reside within the first 63 base pairs of the UTR. Deleting a large segment of the rbcL 5'UTR in a 3'--5' direction to position +36, changing the remaining 36 base pairs at the 5' end of the UTR, and increasing by five base pairs the distance between the rbcL 5'UTR and the basic promoter element located at position -10 did not abolish transcription from the basic rbcL promoter. It is concluded that the apparent loss of transcriptional a…

Innenfor temaet benyttes det to kriger (caser).

Ingestion, digestion, and egestion in Spongilla lacustris (Porifera, Spongillidae) after pulse feeding with Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Volvocales)

1993

The route followed by food particles in Spongilla lacustris was clarified by light and electron microscopic examination of sponges fed with Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The algal cells are phagocytosed by prosendopinacocytes and choanocytes. After some time they are transferred to archaeocytes, amoebocytes, and lophocytes. Changes in algal structure during digestion were observed and the egestion of algal remnants was documented in life for the first time. In light micrographs, digestion of the algal cells is manifest first in shrinkage of the cells, then in disintegration to form several spherical green fragments 2–3 μm in diameter, and finally, after 12–18 h, in a reddish brown discoloratio…
