International audience; The thermal infrared hemispherical downwelling irradiance (HDI) emitted by the atmosphere and surrounding elements contributes through reflection to the signal measured over an observed surface by remote sensing. This irradiance must be estimated in order to obtain accurate values of land-surface temperature (LST). There are some fast methods to measure the HDI with a single measurement pointing to the sky at a specified viewing direction, but these methods require completely cloud-free or cloudy skies, and they do not account for the radiative contribution of surrounding elements. Global Sensitivity Analysis of Leaf-Canopy-Atmosphere RTMs: Implications for Biophysical Variables Retrieval from Top-of-Atmosphere Radiance Data.

Knowledge of key variables driving the top of the atmosphere (TOA) radiance over a vegetated surface is an important step to derive biophysical variables from TOA radiance data, e.g., as observed by an optical satellite. Coupled leaf-canopy-atmosphere Radiative Transfer Models (RTMs) allow linking vegetation variables directly to the at-sensor TOA radiance measured. Global Sensitivity Analysis (GSA) of RTMs enables the computation of the total contribution of each input variable to the output variance. In this letter, we provide a complete set of split-window coefficients that can be used to retrieve land surface temperature (LST) from thermal infrared sensors onboard the most popular remote-sensing satellites: ERS-ATSR2, ENVISAT-AATSR, Terra/Aqua-MODIS, NOAA series-AVHRR, METOP-AVHRR3, GOES series-IMAGER, and MSG1/MSG2-SEVIRI. Under sun-light illumination, the shape of the atmospheric oxygen bands (O 2 -B, 687 nm and O 2 -A, 760 nm) of the vegetation radiance is modified by chlorophyll fluorescence. However for far-range measurements, atmospheric effects also modify this shape. In this study, measurements in O 2 -A and O 2 -B absorption bands have been performed at different altitudes up to 3123 m over bare soil and wheat fields. It is observed that bands depth increase significantly with altitude. The objective of this work is to simulate global images that would be provided by a theoretical ocean color sensor on a geostationary orbit at longitude 0, in order to assess the range of radiance value data reaching the sensor throughout the day for 20 spectral bands similar to those of the Ocean and Land Color Imager (OLCI). The secondary objective is to assess the illumination and viewing geometries that result in sunglint. Surface temperature retrieval from Along Track Scanning Radiometer 2 data: Algorithms and validation

[1] A study has been carried out using MODTRAN 3.5 simulations of the Along Track Scanning Radiometer 2 (ATSR-2) data at 3.7, 11, and 12 μm wavelengths to give a range of algorithms for estimating surface. Making use of the dual-angle feature of the ATSR-2, algorithms based on dual-angle, split-window, and mixed structure have been considered. The coefficients of the algorithms are derived by regression analysis using the MATLAB code. This paper presents a revision, an update, and an extension of the generalized single-channel (SC) algorithm developed by Jimenez-Munoz and Sobrino (2003), which was particularized to the thermal-infrared (TIR) channel (band 6) located in the Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) sensor. The SC algorithm relies on the concept of atmospheric functions (AFs) which are dependent on atmospheric transmissivity and upwelling and downwelling atmospheric radiances.
