‘Georges Duthuit’s Le Rose et le noir : Disseminating Walter Pater’s The Renaissance in the 1920s’
2023
My proposal presents a lesser-known study of Walter Pater published in 1923 (?) by a young undergraduate named Georges Duthuit (1891-1973). Hovering between different subjects, arguments, portraits, and disciplines, Le Rose et le noir was the first book-length publication of Duthuit, at the time having just obtained his Licence d’anglais (BA) in 1921, and about to embark on a career as a distinguished art historian specialized in Byzantine studies. Duthuit soon stood as a distinguished Franco-British mediator in art matters, a committed scholar and administrator and, later in the 1940s, an editor of Transition. He remains arguably an outstanding art historian but I would like to focus on hi…
Tungsten oxide thin films sputter deposited by the reactive gas pulsing process for the dodecane detection
2015
International audience; The DC reactive magnetron sputtering of a metallic tungsten target was performed in an argon + oxygen atmosphere for depositing tungsten oxide thin films. In order to control the oxygen concentration in the films, the reactive gas pulsing process, namely RGPP, was implemented. Rectangular pulses were used with a constant pulsing period T = 16 s whereas the duty cycle α (time of oxygen injection to pulsing period T ratio) was systematically changed from 0 to 100% of T. This pulsing injection of the reactive gas allowed a gradual evolution of the films composition from pure metallic to over-stoichiometric WO3+ɛ’ compounds. These WOx films were sputter deposited on comm…

Experience and Existence Revisited Something Essential on A Philosophical Education in Film Art
2013
Abstract The film, the living imagery, traces out its legend before the eyes of the viewer seated there in the darkened space, and in his consciousness becomes a lived spectacle, an interiorised impress of experience. It takes up its abode in him and he falls in step with its movement, merging with the stream of its narrative. In this there evolves an aesthetic-existential situation – of one, many; of one, a qualitative multiplicity is born, and with it the experienced essence of the unique, the inimitable. On this same, the critic pronounces judgement – as often as not his verdict – on this spectacle which he – and another – has beheld; that individual, original experience is thus now couc…
Prestroke Weight Loss Is Associated With Poststroke Mortality Among Men in the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study
2014
Objective To examine baseline prestroke weight loss and poststroke mortality among men. Design Longitudinal study of late-life prestroke body mass index (BMI), weight loss, and BMI change (midlife to late life) with up to 8-year incident stroke and mortality follow-up. Setting Community-based aging study data. Participants Japanese-American men (N=3581; age range, 71–93y) who were stroke free at baseline. Interventions Not applicable. Main Outcome Measure Poststroke mortality: 30 days poststroke, analyzed with stepwise multivariable logistic regression; and long-term poststroke (up to 8y), analyzed with stepwise multivariable Cox regression. Results Weight loss (4.5kg decrements) was associ…

An Icy Force Both Foul and Fair : The Theme of Love Versus Fear in the Dutch Bubbed Version of Disney's Frozen
2020
This study compares the songs from the original, English-language version of the 2013 Disney film Frozen to those of the Dutch dubbed version, investigating how the thematic representation of love and fear differ between these versions. To support this inherently qualitative analysis, this study employs the triangle of aspects, an analytical model that identifies certain aspects and variables central to animated musical film dubbing, allowing a quantification of differences between dubbed versions. It is found that the dubbed songs differ most strongly from the original songs in the verbal code, which covers issues such as semantic sense and register, and least in the musical code, which co…
