Recurrent On-Duty Sleepiness and Alertness Management Strategies in Long-Haul Airline Pilots

Introduction We examined whether long-haul airline pilots without recurrent on-duty sleepiness obtain more prior sleep and use more effective in-flight alertness management strategies than their colleagues with recurrent on-duty sleepiness. Methods There were 51 pilots who flew at least twice from Helsinki to Asia. Of them, 44 flew at least twice back to Helsinki following 1 local night. On-duty sleepiness was measured by the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), alertness management strategies by a diary, and sleep by a diary and activity monitor. Pilots who rated KSS ≥ 7 on each, some, or none of the flights were classified as "regularly", "sometimes", and "never" sleepy, respectively. This …

Il lessico critico multilingue, che forma la parte centrale del lavoro, si articola in otto entrate terminologiche in cui i concetti presi in esame vengono analizzati a livello sincronico, diacronico, interlinguistico e interculturale.

Predicting stiffness and strength of birch pulp:Polylactic acid composites

This paper studies failure of birch pulp–polylactic acid composites. Stiffness and strength are calculated using the theory of short fibre composites and the results are compared to experimental data. The results differed from the experimental values by 0–6%. With less aligned fibres the short fibre theory is not feasible. The performance of the 40 wt% birch pulp – polylactic acid composite is predicted with X-ray microtomography based finite element modelling, and the results are compared with experiments. Stepping up to strike: a union mobilization case study of Polish migrant workers in the Netherlands

This article examines a union mobilization of Polish temporary agency workers in the Netherlands. The case study contributes to the migrant organizing literature a micro-level account of the dynamics of mobilization from the viewpoint of the migrants and organizers involved. The findings emphasize the importance of key actors in building solidarities within and between different groups of workers in fragmented workplaces, with implications for unions seeking new ways to respond to changing employment practices. This study highlights some of the possibilities and limitations of organizing among contractually fragmented workforces.

How Should We Interpret Institutional Duty-Claims?

It is rather natural to suppose that what we mean when we say that an institutional organization has a moral duty is parallel to whatever it is that we mean when we say that an individual has a duty. I challenge this interpretation on the grounds that it assumes that institutional organizations possess those characteristics or abilities requisite for moral agency—an assumption which I argue is highly suspicious. Against such an interpretation, I argue that we have very good reasons to suppose that the term ‘has a duty’ is used equivocally across individual and institutional contexts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of high-impact exercise on bone mineral mass and strength, and on knee cartilage composition in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis (OA). In addition, the association between knee OA and femoral neck bone structural characteristics in women with mild knee radiographic OA and those without radiographic knee OA was studied. Also, the reproducibility of measuring human knee joint cartilage by the delayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI (dGEMRIC) technique was determined in healthy asymptomatic subjects.
