Daily Physical Activity and Sedentary Time Assessed by Acceleration Based on Mean Amplitude Deviation among Older People

2020

Accelerometer-derived estimates of physical activity (PA) and sedentary time have been an important methodological focus. However, little is known about the daily activities among older people during their normal lives. Furthermore, some older individuals would like to be more active, yet experience an unmet PA need, which is defined as the desire to engage in more PA but without the opportunity to act on the desire. This study examined the intensity of daily PA and sedentary behavior measured with accelerometers among older people, and whether PA differs between weekdays and weekends and those with and without the experience of unmet PA need, measured with self-reports. A total of 174 comm…

Individual and environmental factors underlying life space of older people – study protocol and design of a cohort study on life-space mobility in ol…

2012

Abstract Background A crucial issue for the sustainability of societies is how to maintain health and functioning in older people. With increasing age, losses in vision, hearing, balance, mobility and cognitive capacity render older people particularly exposed to environmental barriers. A central building block of human functioning is walking. Walking difficulties may start to develop in midlife and become increasingly prevalent with age. Life-space mobility reflects actual mobility performance by taking into account the balance between older adults internal physiologic capacity and the external challenges they encounter in daily life. The aim of the Life-Space Mobility in Old Age (LISPE) p…

Evaluation of the home help service and its impact on the informal caregiver's burden of dependent elders

2006

Aim This study looks at the objective and subjective characteristics of home respite service provision and its impact on the informal care burden of dependent elders. Method A sample of 296 dependent people and their informal caregivers was randomly selected among users and non-users of the Home Help Service (HHS) in an autonomous Spanish region (Comunidad Valenciana). An experimental design was used and a field study was carrying out that collected information on sociodemographic variables of the dependent person and his/her caregiver, HHS characteristics and the assessment of the services delivered by this resource as well as the informal caregivers'burden. Results The results show that t…

Health condition and physical function as predictors of adherence in long-term strength and balance training among community-dwelling older adults

2015

AIM: Strength and balance training (SBT) has remarkable health benefits, but little is known regarding exercise adherence in older adults. We examined the adherence to strength and balance training and determinants of adherence among ≥75 year old adults. METHODS: 182 community-dwelling individuals (aged 75-98 years, 71% female) began group-based SBT as part of a population-based Geriatric Multidisciplinary Strategy for the Good Care of the Elderly study. Training was offered once a week for 2.3 years. Adherence was defined as the proportion of attended sessions relative to offered sessions. Participants were classified based on their adherence level into low (≤33.3%), moderate (33.4-66.5%) …

The unfortunate generation: stroke survivors in Riga, Latvia

2003

Abstract The poor health status of citizens in post-Soviet states has been reported but few studies have investigated the illness experiences of people in those countries. This paper reports findings from an interview study conducted with stroke patients in Riga, Latvia, who were part of a cohort recruited over 1 year for a European study comparing the provision of care, outcomes and resource use. The interview study aimed to elicit stroke patients’ own perceptions of the impact of stroke 1 year after the event. Adopting a phenomenological perspective we illustrate how the particular social setting shapes stroke as an illness, its influences on access to health care and on consideration of …

Health and functional capacity as predictors of community dwelling among elderly people

2000

The aim of this study was to identify factors that predict community dwelling (i.e., nonuse of institutional bed-days) among elderly people. This was a longitudinal study of institution use including both short-term and long-term use of hospitals and nursing homes. The impact of health, functional performance, and carrying out the activities of daily living on community dwelling was studied using the method of path analysis. The participants were all the 75-year-old (N = 388) and 80-year-old (N = 291) men and women resident in the City of Jyväskylä, Finland. Predictor variables included disease severity, symptoms of illness, cognitive capacity, walking speed, muscle strength, hearing, and a…

Validity and reliability of Resource Utilization Groups (RUG-III) in Finnish long-term care facilities

1999

Resource Utilization Groups, Version III (RUG-III) is a case-mix system developed in the USA for classification of long-term care residents. This paper examines the validity and reliability of an adapted 22-group version of RUG-III (RUG-III/22) for use in long-term care facilities in Finland. Finnish cost weights for RUG-III/22 groups are calculated and different methods for their computation are evaluated. The study sample (1,964 residents) was collected in 1995 - 96 from ten long-term care facilities in Finland. RUG-III/22 alone explained 38.2% of the variance of total patient-specific (nursing + auxiliary staff) per diem cost. Resource use within RUG groups was relatively homogeneous. O…

Associations Between Environmental Characteristics and Life-Space Mobility in Community-Dwelling Older People

2015

Objective: To examine the association between perceived environmental barriers to and facilitators for outdoor mobility with life-space among older people. Methods: Community-dwelling, 75- to 90-year-old people ( n = 848) were interviewed face-to-face using standard questionnaires. The Life-Space Assessment (LSA), indicating distance and frequency of moving and assistance needed in moving (range 0-120), was used. Environmental barriers and facilitators outdoors were self-reported. Results: Altogether, 41% ( n = 348) of the participants had restricted life-space (LSA score < 60). Those reporting one or more environmental barriers had more than double the odds for restricted life-space co…

Under-detection of delirium and impact of neurocognitive deficits on in-hospital mortality among acute geriatric and medical wards

2015

Abstract Background Delirium is a neuropsychiatric disorder, triggered by medical precipitants causes. Study aims were to describe the prevalence and impact on in-hospital mortality of delirium identified through ICD-9 codes as well as evidence of neurocognitive deficits demonstrated in a population of older patients admitted to acute medical wards. Methods This was a prospective cohort multicenter study of 2521 older patients enrolled in the “Registro Politerapie SIMI (REPOSI)” during the years 2010 and 2012. The diagnosis of delirium was obtained by ICD-9 codes. Cognitive function was evaluated with the Short Blessed Test (SBT) and single SBT items were used as measures of deficits in att…
