Simple methods for enhancing patient outcome in routine care: Measuring, monitoring, and feedback
2014
While highly effective, psychotherapy outcome studies suggest 5?14% of clients worsen while in treatment and that therapists are unable to identify a substantial portion of such cases. Methods to systematically track client mental health functioning over the course of treatment and adjust treatment through the use of problem-solving tools are described. We summarize meta-analyses of the effects of a feedback system indicating that the number of psychotherapy patients who deteriorate can be cut in half. We conclude with a series of practice implications, including that clinicians seriously consider making formal methods of collecting client feedback a routine part of their daily practice.
Short term associations of ambient nitrogen dioxide with daily total, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality: multilocation analysis in 398 cities
2021
Objective To evaluate the short term associations between nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and total, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality across multiple countries/regions worldwide, using a uniform analytical protocol. Design Two stage, time series approach, with overdispersed generalised linear models and multilevel meta-analysis. Setting 398 cities in 22 low to high income countries/regions. Main outcome measures Daily deaths from total (62.8 million), cardiovascular (19.7 million), and respiratory (5.5 million) causes between 1973 and 2018. Results On average, a 10 μg/m3 increase in NO2 concentration on lag 1 day (previous day) was associated with 0.46% (95% confidence interval 0.36% to 0.5…
Pediatric Chronic Migraine Severity and Maternal Stress
2021
Primary headache is an increasing phenomenon in pediatric age, and very often, it causes disabling limitations in children’s daily activities, negatively affecting family well-being. There are conflicting data in the literature on the impact of children’s migraines on parental experienced stress. This study aimed to evaluate maternal stress in a sample of school-aged children with a migraine without aura (MwoA) and its correlation with migraine intensity and frequency. A total of 474 mothers aged between 31 and 55 participated in the study: 237 were mothers of children with MwoA, and 237 were mothers of typical developing children. All participants were administered the Parent Stress Index-…
Selenium contents of human milk and infant formulas in Spain.
1999
The selenium content of Spanish human milk samples and different milk-based and soy-based infant formulas has been estimated by using a flow injection hydride atomic absorption spectrometric method after microwave digestion of the organic matter. Mean values of 11.4 +/- 3.7 and 10.7 +/- 4.6 ng/ml for colostrum and transitional milk, 8.4 +/- 3.4 and 5.3 +/- 1.9 ng/ml for mature milk at 1 month and up to 2 months respectively, was obtained. These values are close to those reported by others authors in Europe, and lower than the ones from the US, Japan and Korea. Selenium contents of the analyzed infants' formulas ranged from 2.7 to 9.6 ng/ml and from 1.8 to 7.5 ng/ml for soy and milk-based in…
Aspetti etici e controllo di gestione dei farmaci antibiotici antibatterici
2010
Summary Introduction Antibacterial prescribing practices between 2004 and 2008 were investigated in the P. Giaccone University Hospital in Palermo, Italy to provide a foundation for critical analysis of the appropriateness of health-care resource usage. Materials and methods Antibiotic prescribing practices between 2004 and 2008 were analyzed in the hospital as a whole and in different specialty areas. Results were expressed as defined daily doses (DDD) as a function of bed-days, number of admissions, and Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) points. Results During the study period, increases were observed in the overall DDD per 100 bed-days (68.7 vs. 91.3) and the DDD per admission (4.53 vs. 5.54)…
Effects of gemfibrozil in hyperlipidemic patients with or without diabetes
1993
Abstract Four hundred sixty-one hyperlipidemic men and women, aged 23 to 73 years, with (n = 200) or without (n = 261) non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus were included in a study designed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of 1,200 mg of gemfibrozil given once daily for 24 weeks. All lipid values improved significantly in both diabetic and nondiabetic patients during treatment. The number of patients with the atherogenic predictor ratio of low-density:high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C:LDL-C) >5 decreased by 95% in both patient groups. The number of patients in the highest-risk subgroup with the combination risk factors of LDL-C:HDL-C >5 and triglyceride levels >200 mg/…
Trends in gastrointestinal bleeding in the Region of Valencia (2000-2005). Relationship to sales of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and acid sup…
2011
Objective: To describe 2000-2005 time trends of prescription for NSAIDs, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and hospital admissions for gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. Methods: Time series analysis of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding admission and drugs’ Defined Daily Dose per 1000 people per day (DDD/1000/day) in the Region of Valencia, Spain, from January 2000 to December 2005. Results: Dispensation of NSAIDs went from 42.7 DDD/1000 people/day in 2000 to 58.3 DDD/1000 people/day in 2005. During the same period, dispensation of PPIs went from 26.3 DDD/1000 people/day to 68.5 DDD/1000 people/day (both are statistically significant). The rate of hospitalisations for gastrointestinal bleeding during…
La vida cotidiana de los vecinos de Manila a través de sus testamentos e inventarios de bienes
2019
With the general objective indicated in its title, this work tries to highlight relevant aspects in the continuity of the Spanish domain in the Philippines, dependent on the maintenance of the Spanish capital. The inevitable selection of topics has lead the preferences of this work towards the residents collaboration to defend the city, the conversion of many of them into traders of exotic products and singular slaves owners, and their collaboration to an incredible miscegenation due to the ethnic variety. On the other hand, to follow the footsteps of the first generation of residents in Manila, at the end of the 16th century and during the 17th century, this work gives us some information …
Relationship between pedometer-determined physical activity and low back pain in middle aged Finnish population (30-45) : "The Young Finns Study"
2016
Undoubtedly, modern sedentary lifestyle is a severe threat factor for various health-related concerns. Engagement in regular physical activity is requisite to achieve physiological and psychological health benefits and to alleviate the risk for many undesirable health outcomes including musculoskeletal, cardiovascular disease, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Staying physically active is recommended in the deterrence and management of low back pain. Lately, an alternative guideline about physical activity has been introduced, which is more realistic than the 30 minutes/day recommendation. This guideline says that attaining 10,000 steps/day improves health. Therefore, pedometers have bec…
Quantification of diffuse and concentrated pollutant loads at the watershed-scale: an Italian case study
2009
In this study, diffuse and point source pollutant loads were evaluated using an Italian case study: the Nocella catchment, which has been subject to extensive monitoring. The Nocella catchment is located in Sicily (Italy) and has an area of about 60 km2. The river receives wastewater and stormwater from two urban areas drained by combined sewers. The two sewer systems, two wastewater treatment plants and a river reach were monitored during both dry and wet weather periods. Thereafter, an integrated catchment-scale model was applied to simulate point pollutant sources, i.e., pollution coming from the urban drainage system, and nonpoint pollutant sources, i.e., pollution coming from agricultu…
