Validity of long-term and short-term recall of occupational sitting time in Finnish and Chinese office workers

2020

Background As sedentary behavior is a global health issue, there is a need for methods of self-reported sitting assessment. The accuracy and reliability of these methods should also be tested in various populations and different cultural contexts. This study examined the validity of long-term and short-term recall of occupational sitting time in Finnish and Chinese subgroups. Methods Two cohort groups of office-based workers (58.6% female, age range 22–67 years) participated: a Finnish group (FIN, n = 34) and a Chinese group (CHI, n = 36). Long-term (past 3-month sitting) and short-term (daily sitting assessed on 5 consecutive days) single-item measures were used to assess self-reported occ…

Musification of Accelerometry Data Towards Raising Awareness of Physical Activity

2022

Previous research has shown that the temporal dynamics of human activity recorded by accelerometers share a similar structure with music. This opens the possibility to use musical sonification of accelerometry data to raise awareness of daily physical activity. In this study a method was developed for quantifying the daily structure of human activity using multigranular temporal segmentation, and applying it to produce musical sonifications. Two accelerometry recordings of physical activity were selected from a dataset, such that one shows more physical activity than the other. These data were segmented in different time-scales so that segmentation boundaries at a given time-scale have a co…

"It is time for the British people to have their say" : The Daily Mail and the Guardian on Brexit from 2013 to 2016

2017

Yhdistyneiden kuningaskuntien kansanäänestys Euroopan Unionista lähtemiseksi kesäkuussa 2016 oli monella tavalla järisyttävä, jopa odottamaton, tapahtuma. Yleisenä oletuksena oli, että vuoden 1975 kansanäänestyksen tulos toistuisi ja Yhdistyneet kuningaskunnat pysyisivät edelleen Euroopan Unionin jäsenmaana maassa pitkään vallinneesta euroskeptisyydestä huolimatta. Tämän tutkielman tarkoitus on tarkastella, miten Brexitin keskustelluimmat teemat kuten maahanmuutto, talous ja identiteetti kehittyivät vuosina 2013-2016 lehdissä the Daily Mail ja the Guardian sekä miten nämä teemat vaikuttivat Brexitin kokonaiskuvaan lehdissä. Tarkastelun kohteena on myös, miten nämä lehdet vaikuttivat lukijoi…

Living standards and changing expectations : investigating domestic necessity and environmental sustainability in an affluent society

2017

This study explores how the problematic relations of rising living standards and environmental sustainability may be better understood by investigating domestic necessity and daily going-on. These key subjects are looked at from two angles and through two kinds of research material: statistics and quantitative survey material constituting of a nationally representative longitudinal dataset of Finnish people (n=2,417 in 1999, n=3,574 in 2004, n=1,202 in 2009), and in-depth interviews (n=14) of a particular socio-economic group, the well-to-do who have higher-than average income and higher education, and those in their prime working age (30–45 years-old). The survey material provides a tempor…

The relation between human values and perceived situation characteristics in everyday life

2018

Values refer to abstract beliefs which serve as guidelines in peoples’ life and affect the way people and events are evaluated. Simultaneously, unlike attitudes, values transcend specific actions, and situations. While recent research showed that values are related to the attention and interpretation of situational information in standardized laboratory settings, up to date hardly any empirical work investigated how values relate to situation perception in daily life. In our study, we assessed the relation between the endorsement of human values and situation characteristics (i.e., the 8 DIAMONDS). Using the Day Reconstruction Method in two samples (German and US-American), we found that es…

Clinical Characteristics, Patient-Reported Outcomes, and Previous Therapeutic Management of Patients with Uncontrolled Neuropathic Pain Referred to P…

2014

Background. The aim of this report was to evaluate the clinical profile and previous management of patients with uncontrolled neuropathic pain who were referred to pain clinics. Methods. We included adult patients with uncontrolled pain who had a score of ≥4 in the DN4 questionnaire. In addition to sociodemographic and clinical data, we evaluated pain levels using a visual analog scale as well as anxiety, depression, sleep, disability, and treatment satisfaction employing validated tools. Results. A total of 755 patients were included in the study. The patients were predominantly referred to pain clinics by traumatologists (34.3%) and primary care physicians (16.7%). The most common diagnos…

Culture of fear, age of anxiety : case of the Ebola outbreak in 2014

2017

Tämä gradu tutkii miten 2014 Ebola epidemiaa Länsi-Afrikassa kuvailtiin länsimaisessa mediassa, sekä sitä miten nämä kuvaukset liittyvät vallitsevaan pelon kulttuuriin. Pelon kulttuuri viittaa viime vuosikymmeninä länsimaissa kasvaneeseen ilmiöön, jossa pelosta on tullut vallitseva osa jokapäiväistä elämää jonka kautta maailmaa ymmärretään. Sosiologien Frank Furedi (2002), Barry Glassner (1999) and David Altheide (2006) tutkimukset pelon kulttuurista muodostavat teoreettisen viitekehyksen tälle tutkimukselle. Aineistoni koostuu englantilaisten The Guardian and Daily Mail lehtien Ebolaa käsittelevistä artikkeleista. Tutkimusmetodina on käytetty kvalitatiivista sisällönanalyysiä, sekä joitain…

Relationship between physical activity and predicted home presenteeism among participants with depressive symptoms with and without clinical depressi…

2021

Background and objectives Depression can pose a major threat to an individual’s ability to cope with daily activities. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between physical activity (PA) and predicted home presenteeism (PHP) among depressive participants. The relationship between PHP and the severity of depressive symptoms was also investigated. Methods A total of 760 participants with depressive symptoms (DS) aged ≥35 years participated in this study. The study was conducted between 2008 and 2016 in municipalities within the Central Finland Hospital District. DS were determined with the 21-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-21) with a cutoff score ≥10, and psychiatric dia…

It's worth the trouble: Stressor exposure is related to increased cognitive reappraisal ability

2021

Recent theories propose moderate (compared to high or no) stressor exposure to promote emotion regulation capacities. More precisely, stressful situations are expected to serve as practice opportunities for cognitive reappraisal (CR), that is, the reinterpretation of a situation to alter its emotional impact. Accordingly, in this study, we expect an inverted U-shaped relationship between exposure to daily hassles and performance in a CR task, that is, best reappraisal ability in individuals with a history of moderate stressor exposure. Participants (N = 165) reported the number of daily hassles during the last week as indicator of stressor exposure and completed the Script-based Reappraisal…
