2018
Graphic modalities (emoticons, emoji, GIF…) are often presented as one of the distinctive features of computer-mediated interaction. In what may be the first reference book on computer-mediated communication (also known as CMC), American linguist Susan C. Herring goes as far as calling them a “unique feature” of digital interaction (Herring 1996, 3). Since then, many linguists have tempered this view and shown that graphic modalities are by no means specific to CMC. However, they remain one of its salient features. Are they, then, to be considered as an evolution or a revolution in interaction? The real question is indeed what they bring to computer-mediated communication, and their status …
Modālo darbības vārdu lietojums ekonomikas diskursā
2016
Šī bakalaura darba mērķis bija analizēt funkcijas, kuras pilda modālie darbības vārdi ekonomikas diskursā kā arī noteikt visbiežāk lietotus modālos darbības vārdus analizējamajā diskursā. Pētījums sastāv no trīm nodaļām: pirmajā nodaļā tiek apskatīts 'ekonomikas diskursa' jēdziens, kā arī to raksturojošās pazīmes. Otrajā nodaļā tiek apspriesta modālo darbības vārdu sistēma un to funkcijas. Trešajā nodaļa tiek analizēti piecpadsmit raksti, kas tika publicēti "The Guardian" (elektroniskā versijā), iztirzājot modālo darbības vārdu lietojumu, kā arī paudot to funkcijas ekonomikas tekstos. Pētījuma rezultāti liecina, ka modālie darbības vārdi tiek visumā bieži lietoti ekonomikas diskursā, jo tie…

This paper attends to languaging in the context of visually oriented communities of sign language users through the concept of chaining. I define chaining as the patterned, routine ways of interlin...
"What is the color of English?" : representation of English in the language portraits of Sámi children
2010
Tutkimus on osa Jyväskylän yliopiston kielten laitoksen Pohjoinen monikielisyys - hanketta, jonka tavoitteena on tutkia monikielisyyttä Pohjoiskalotin alueella.

Sexual dimorphism in the vertebral wedging of the human lumbar vertebrae and its importance as a comparative framework for understanding the wedging …
2020
Lumbar lordosis is a key element of the upright posture, being interpreted as a consequence of bipedal locomotion. There is consensus that the generic modern human pattern of metameric vertebral body wedging is sexually dimorphic in modern humans. However, recently published studies have compared this pattern with other hominins, such as Neanderthals. These tried to establish whether the (male) Neanderthal lumbar vertebrae express a pattern that falls within or outside the range of modern human males. In the present study, data collected by 3D landmarks of the lumbar vertebrae of modern humans from different geographic regions and Neanderthals (Ntotal = 505 individual vertebrae) are used to…
Comparison of the acute effects of anti-TNF-alpha drugs on a uveitis experimental model.
2010
To compare histopathological and biochemical effects of the anti-TNF-alpha drugs adalimumab and infliximab in a uveitis experimental model.Histopathological evaluation was performed 24 h after endotoxin (200 microg into the footpad) and drug administration, as well as biochemical analysis of oxidative stress-related markers in the aqueous humor.Severe inflammation was found in rat anterior chamber of the eye 24 h after endotoxin. Only infliximab administration partially prevented the endotoxin-induced disruption of the blood-aqueous barrier, as well as the increase in Rantes and MCP-1 concentration in aqueous humor. Both drugs ameliorated the histopathological score after endotoxin. Biochem…
Adalimumab in active ulcerative colitis: A “real-life” observational study
2013
Abstract Background and aims The effectiveness of adalimumab in the treatment of ulcerative colitis is under debate. Although controlled trials have shown that adalimumab is significantly better than placebo, the absolute clinical benefit is modest. We report data on the effectiveness of adalimumab in a cohort of ulcerative colitis patients treated in 22 Italian centres. Methods All patients with active disease treated with adalimumab were retrospectively reviewed. Co-primary endpoints were clinical remission at weeks 4, 12, 24 and 54. Secondary endpoints were sustained clinical remission, steroid discontinuation, endoscopic remission and need for colectomy. Results Eighty-eight patients we…
