Drowned Landscapes: The Rediscovered Archaeological Heritage of the Mosul Dam Reservoir
2023
Like natural catastrophes or armed conflicts, resource extraction projects herald the alteration or destruction of natural and cultural landscapes alike. Dam construction is a major threat to cultural heritage in Western Asian archaeology. One event may result in obliterating hundreds of sites, most of which never reappear or do so only sporadically following cyclical water fluctuation. Destruction of sites remains ongoing, necessitating constant assessment of damage and the establishment of strategies of documentation and maintenance. This paper proposes a new paradigm for future safeguarding and, more widely, a new tool for managing contiguous terrestrial and lacustrine cultural zones. It…
Paternity testing of endangered species of birds by DNA fingerprinting with non-radioactive labelled oligonucleotide probes
1993
In the last years, DNA fingerprinting became the most powerful tool for identification and paternity testing in man. The success of this method encouraged the German Federal Ministry of Environment, Natural Protection and Reactor Safety to apply DNA fingerprinting in the field of protection of endangered species of birds, such as birds of prey or parrots. In the last three years, we received more than 400 blood and tissue samples of 23 species of birds of prey or parrots, most of them obtained by confiscation, to establish paternity and legal breeding success. We used digoxigenated oligonucleotide probes, mainly (GGAT)4 and (GACA)4 for hybridization. In most cases of confiscated families of…
An English teacher's ways of motivating students in Dangerous Minds and Dead Poets Society
2014
Czerwona lista porostów zagrożonych na Śląsku Opolskim i Górnym Śląsku [Red List of threatened lichens in Opole Silesia and Upper Silesia]
2014
The thirth regional list of threatened and allied fungi is presented. The list is a result of investigation studies in Opole Silesia and Upper Silesia in S Poland. The status of threat to the lichen and allied fungi species used has been determined according to the IUCN Red List Categories in version 3. l (2001). The data obtained were compared with historical ones. While assigning given lichen species to suitable categories of threat the geographic criterium of their occurrence ranges was accepted because most source data from the study area concerns the distribution and frequency of species. The Red List includes 536 taxa of lichens, lichenicolous and saprobic fungi, which constitute 72.9…
Incorporating spatial structure and stochasticity in endangered Bonelli’s eagle’s population models: implications for conservation and management
2008
Population models have played a chief role informing management decisions for the endangered Bonelli’s eagle (Aquila fasciata) in Spain. In this paper, we incorporate spatial structure and stochasticity in the construction of individual-based metapopulation models, and use these models to explore the effects of possible management actions on the persistence of the species in Spain. To build the models we used data on seven sub-populations that have experienced different trends in the last decades, and we introduced new estimates of pre-adult survival rate. The elasticity analysis of our models showed that when the interchange of individuals among sub-populations is taken into account, pre-a…
Quantifying the Indicator Power of an Indicator Species
2009
Biodiversity indicator species are needed for classifying biotopes and sites for conservation, and a number of methods have been developed for determining indicator species for this purpose. Nevertheless, in addition to site classification, there is sometimes a need to define an indicator species that indicates the occurrence of another species. For example, when a species of interest (target species) is difficult to detect or identify, a reliable indicator species can function as a tool that saves time and money. We derived a method that provides a quantitative measure of the indicator power (IP) of an indicator species for the target species or any species assemblage. We calculated the me…
Distribution, ecology and conservation survey on theCeltis tournefortiisubsp.aetnensis(Celtidaceae: Cannabaceae) populations in Sicily
2014
Results of research on the Celtis tournefortii subsp. aetnensis (Celtidaceae-Cannabaceae) populations in Sicily, based on the monitoring of the various nuclei distributed in the territory, are presented. In particular, two new important unpublished stations located in the southern part of the Sicani Mountains, widespread over an area of approximately 75 hectares, are reported. It is highlighted that the species, besides the lava flows of the western slope of Mount Etna (Catania province), is tied to conoids present in five other disjointed sub-ranges, often with fragmentary and relictual stations: (1) Nebrodi Mountains inland (Cesarò territory, Messina province); (2) Madonie Mountains inlan…
Conservation of forest biodiversity using temporal conservation contracts
2012
Abstract Temporal conservation contracts are used to protect biodiversity in privately owned lands worldwide. We examine how stand characteristics and habitat requirements of target species affect the contract length in a boreal forest context. We develop an integrated optimization model and apply the model with data on endangered species occurring in spruce forests in Finland. The results suggest that a cost-effective conservation policy for protecting privately owned forest land involves both short- and long-term contracts between landowners and environmental agencies. The higher the conservation objective, the more intensively long-term contracts should be assigned. Managed stands should…
Morphological characterization of the blood cells in the endangered Sicilian endemic pond turtle,Emys trinacris(Testudines: Emydidae)
2014
AbstractIn this study, measurements of morphological parameters, sizes and frequencies of peripheral blood cells (erythrocytes, leukocytes, thrombocytes) on blood smear preparation devices stained with May-Grunwald stain were evaluated for both sexes in 20 Emys trinacris (Testudines: Emydidae) specimens. Erythrocytes were higher in male than in female specimens. The leukocyte of E. trinacris contains eosinophil, basophil, monocyte, heterophil and lymphocyte. The eosinophil was higher in males than in females whereas lymphocytes were higher in females than in males. The erythrocyte morphological parameters (EL [erythrocyte length], EW [erythrocyte width], L/W [length/width], ES [erythrocyte …
Dialektmerkmale des Deutschen in den sprachbiographischen Interviews der bilingualen Oberschlesier
2022
The article is based on language biographies which come from the interviews conducted as part of the German-Polish project LangGener with native inhabitants of the former German territories of today’s Poland. Out of 124 recordings, 20 linguistic biographical interviews with respondents from Upper Silesia were subjected to analysis where special attention was paid to the features of Silesian German dialects occurring in them. Even though the Silesian linguistic landscape is now considered by researchers to be a historical object of studies due to the shifting of borders after World War II and the accompanying population exchange, the article shows that the linguistic material currently obtai…
