Intrinsic backgrounds from Rn and Kr in the XENON100 experiment
2018
In this paper, we describe the XENON100 data analyses used to assess the target-intrinsic background sources radon ([InlineMediaObject not available: see fulltext.]), thoron ([InlineMediaObject not available: see fulltext.]) and krypton ([InlineMediaObject not available: see fulltext.]). We detail the event selections of high-energy alpha particles and decay-specific delayed coincidences. We derive distributions of the individual radionuclides inside the detector and quantify their abundances during the main three science runs of the experiment over a period of ∼4years, from January 2010 to January 2014. We compare our results to external measurements of radon emanation and krypton concentr…
Time-domain effective-one-body gravitational waveforms for coalescing compact binaries with nonprecessing spins, tides and self-spin effects
2018
We present TEOBResumS, a new effective-one-body (EOB) waveform model for nonprecessing (spin-aligned) and tidally interacting compact binaries.Spin-orbit and spin-spin effects are blended together by making use of the concept of centrifugal EOB radius. The point-mass sector through merger and ringdown is informed by numerical relativity (NR) simulations of binary black holes (BBH) computed with the SpEC and BAM codes. An improved, NR-based phenomenological description of the postmerger waveform is developed. The tidal sector of TEOBResumS describes the dynamics of neutron star binaries up to merger and incorporates a resummed attractive potential motivated by recent advances in the post-Newt…
Search for heavy neutrinos with the T2K near detector ND280
2019
This paper reports on the search for heavy neutrinos with masses in the range 140<MN<493 MeV/c2 using the off-axis near detector ND280 of the T2K experiment. These particles can be produced from kaon decays in the standard neutrino beam and then subsequently decay in ND280. The decay modes under consideration are N→ℓ±απ∓ and N→ℓ+αℓ−β(−)ν(α,β=e,μ). A search for such events has been made using the Time Projection Chambers of ND280, where the background has been reduced to less than two events in the current dataset in all channels. No excess has been observed in the signal region. A combined Bayesian statistical approach has been applied to extract upper limits on the mixing elements of heav…

Analysis of network rumor dissemination and control mechanisms on Chinese social network : Sina Weibo
2016
The social network has become a major source of information. The openness and swiftness of the network bring instant accessing to both true and false information. Sometimes the false information such as network rumors can mislead people from obtaining the true information and even create chaos. The social network platforms and the governments in different countries are making effort on enacting their own mechanisms to strive on eliminating the rumors. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the spreading of rumors on the Chinese social networking website Sina Weibo. The censorship policy of the Chinese government and the methods used to control the spreading of rumors are discussed. The la…
Self organizing maps as a novel tool for data analysis in education
2016
Young people currently live and are connected to the virtual world in a natural and simple way. Nevertheless, in spite of the great advantages of the use of Information and Communication Technology, and particularly social networks, there are several drawbacks, principally security and privacy of net users. However, human behaviour is strongly non-linear, so usual statistical analysis does not yield accurate results. Now, machine learning algorithms are very common in solving real life non-linear problems, such as economics, medicine and engineering. So it would be worthy to apply this methodology on education data sets. In this work, a non-linear, visual algorithm named Self Organizing Map…
Assessing the Beneficial Effects of Economic Growth: The Harmonic Growth Index
2011
In this paper we introduce the multidimensional notion of harmonic growth as a situation of diffused well-being associated to an increase of per capita GDP. We say that a country experienced a harmonic growth if during the observed period all the key indicators, proxies of the endogenous and exogenous forces driving population well-being, show a significantly common pattern with the income dynamics. The notion is operationalized via an index of time series harmony which follows the functional data analysis approach. This Harmonic Growth Index (HGI) is based on comparisons between the coefficients from cubic B-splines interpolation. Such indices are then synthesized in order to provide the g…
Application of Electronic Nose for Evaluation of Wastewater Treatment Process Effects at Full-Scale WWTP
2019
This paper presents the results of studies aiming at the assessment and classification of wastewater using an electronic nose. During the experiment, an attempt was made to classify the medium based on an analysis of signals from a gas sensor array, the intensity of which depended on the levels of volatile compounds in the headspace gas mixture above the wastewater table. The research involved samples collected from the mechanical and biological treatment devices of a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), as well as wastewater analysis. The measurements were carried out with a metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) gas sensor array, when coupled with a computing unit (e.g., a computer with…
Changes in spatial and sectoral patterns of employment in Ile-de-France, 1978-1997
2006
International audience; This paper investigates the spatial distribution of employment in the region of Ile-de-France in 1978 and 1997. Exploratory spatial data analysis is used to identify employment centres and a sectoral analysis of the central business district (CBD) and sub-centres is performed. The results highlight a process of suburbanisation of employment in Ile-de-France between 1978 and 1997. A more polarised space emerges in 1997 than in 1978, with several employment centres specialised in different activities. Moreover, even if the spatial influence of the CBD declines over the study period, the CBD maintains its economic leadership by concentrating a large variety of high-orde…
Exporatory data analysis of environmental governance at local level in the south -west region of Poland
2018
Prowadzenie zintegrowanych działań w ramach zrównoważonego rozwoju wymaga obiektywnego rozpoznania potrzeb ich wdrażania na podstawie wyników kompleksowych analiz wielu złożonych, powiązanych ze sobą czynników odzwierciedlających stan środowiska przyrodniczego i sytuację ekonomiczno-demograficzną. Wzrastająca funkcjonalność Systemów Informacji Geograficznej (GIS) spowodowała, że bazy danych GIS stały się narzędziem wspierającym implementację działań z zakresu zrównoważonego rozwoju. Celem pracy było rozpoznanie zmienności przestrzennej poziomu ładu środowiskowego w południowo-zachodnim regionie Polski. Zastosowano metody badań z zakresu wielowymiarowych technik eksploracji danych i analizy …
