Migrating from a Centralized Data Warehouse to a Decentralized Data Platform Architecture
2021
To an increasing degree, data is a driving force for digitization, and hence also a key asset for numerous companies. In many businesses, various sources of data exist, which are isolated from one another in different domains, across a heterogeneous application landscape. Well-known centralized solution technologies, such as data warehouses and data lakes, exist to integrate data into one system, but they do not always scale well. Therefore, robust and decentralized ways to manage data can provide the companies with better value give companies a competitive edge over a single central repository. In this paper, we address why and when a monolithic data storage should be decentralized for imp…
Development of a Native Cross-Platform iRODS GUI Client
2015
This paper describes activities on the research IT infrastructure development project at the University of Jyväskylä. The main contribution is a cross-platform iRODS client application with a rich graphical user interface. The client application is fully native and builds from a single C++ codebase on all of the platforms on which iRODS 4.0 is supported. The application has a responsive UI with native look & feel and enables drag & drop integration to the desktop. This is made possible by basing the development of the client application on top of the Qt 5 framework and an object-oriented C++ framework for iRODS which is being developed with the client application. The objectoriented framewo…
A Location Based Service for the production of interactive photographs
2010
Currently, photographs are an indispensable means for documenting and surveying objects and places, however, they have an inherent limitation due to a lack of identification data. Digital applications on a photograph could resolve this limitation. This paper, therefore, details the results of a research based on an innovative photographic system, with the purpose of identifying objects in digital photos. To carry out this procedure, this is achieved by partly utilizing a Location Based Service. The final product, obtained from the user in real time with a simple shot of the photo, constitutes a small information system, which enables the analysis of the images of places and objects in an in…
MAIN FEATURES OF A 3D GIS FOR A MONUMENTAL COMPLEX WITH AN HISTORICAL-CULTURAL RELEVANCE
2018
Abstract. The last achievements of technologies in geomatics especially in survey and restitution of 3D models (UAV/drones and laser scanner technologies) generated new procedures and higher standards of quality in representation of archaeological sites. Together with Geomatics, the recent development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) strongly contribute to document and the Cultural Heritage (CH). The representation and documentation of CH using these new technologies has became necessary in order to satisfy different needs: – for restorers in order to acquire a deep knowledge of the cultural good and to define possible strategies of restoration; – for the conservation of …

Interlinked and integrated research support services
2022
This poster introduces the efficient set of research support services available in University of Jyväskylä’s (JYU) Open Science Centre (OSC). The set includes several essential services for researchers to help them execute an open and responsible research process. The continuous improvement of research support services has led to an interlinked, integrated and harmonious set of technical solutions, processes and workflows which meet the needs of researchers and help them implement open science and FAIR policies in practice. They also save time and enable better working processes for the researchers but also for the experts conducting these services. The poster describes two main services …
Error messages in relational database management systems: A comparison of effectiveness, usefulness, and user confidence
2021
Abstract The database and the database management system (DBMS) are two of the main components of any information system. Structured Query Language (SQL) is the most popular query language for retrieving data from the database, as well as for many other data management tasks. During system development and maintenance, software developers use a considerable amount of time to interpret compiler error messages. The quality of these error messages has been demonstrated to affect software development effectiveness, and correctly formulating queries and fixing them when needed is an important task for many software developers. In this study, we set out to investigate how participants ( N = 152 ) …
