Dataset shift adaptation with active queries

2011

In remote sensing image classification, it is commonly assumed that the distribution of the classes is stable over the entire image. This way, training pixels labeled by photointerpretation are assumed to be representative of the whole image. However, differences in distribution of the classes throughout the image make this assumption weak and a model built on a single area may be suboptimal when applied to the rest of the image. In this paper, we investigate the use of active learning to correct the shifts that may appear when training and test data do not come from the same distribution. Experiments are carried out on a VHR remote sensing classification scenario showing that active learni…

An Approach to Data Quality Evaluation

2018

This research proposes a new approach to data quality evaluation comprising 3 aspects: (1) data object definition, which quality will be analyzed, (2) quality requirements specification for the data object using Domain Specific Language (DSL), (3) implementation of an executable data quality model that would enable scanning of data object and detect its shortages. Like the Model Driven Architecture (MDA) the data quality modelling is divided into platform independent (PIM) and platform-specific (PSM) models. PIM comprises informal specifications of data quality, PSM describes implementation of data quality model, thus making the data quality model executable. The approbation of the proposed…

Contributions to the knowledge base on PV performance: Evaluation of the operation of PV systems using different technologies installed in southern N…

2011

To assist in establishing an accepted knowledge base on PV-modules and systems performance using a representative range of technologies, devices have to be installed at diverse locations, covering a broad range of environmental conditions. For the example of a high latitude location, modules and systems are installed and under investigation in southern Norway (Kristiansand region) by the University of Agder in cooperation with industrial partners. This paper presents first results of the analysis of module performance. The operational behavior of the modules is used to derive a modeling scheme applicable for performance prediction. This use is demonstrated by giving the expected annual perf…

Experimental Performance Evaluation of Cloud-Based Analytics-as-a-Service

2016

An increasing number of Analytics-as-a-Service solutions has recently seen the light, in the landscape of cloud-based services. These services allow flexible composition of compute and storage components, that create powerful data ingestion and processing pipelines. This work is a first attempt at an experimental evaluation of analytic application performance executed using a wide range of storage service configurations. We present an intuitive notion of data locality, that we use as a proxy to rank different service compositions in terms of expected performance. Through an empirical analysis, we dissect the performance achieved by analytic workloads and unveil problems due to the impedance…

A service-based recommendation system to assist decision making in a small and medium company

2020

Collaboration and resource sharing have attracted a great interest among companies. Our contribution relates to this context, providing a decision-making support for companies. We propose a platform to facilitate resource sharing between collaborative companies, through a recommendation system. This system provides similar services that respond to a company’s needs. The approach presented in this paper includes the choice of a representation model for the services as well as the selection of an appropriate measure of similarity. This latter is mainly based on a comparative study of three measures of similarity using several performance evaluation measures. In order to evaluate our approach,…

Data-based modeling of vehicle collision by LPV-ARMAX model approach

2013

Vehicle crash are considered to be events with high complexity from the mathematical points of view. The high experiment cost and huge time-consumption make the establishment of a mathematical model of vehicle crash which can simplify the analysis process in great demand. In this work, we present the application of LPV-ARMAX model to simulate the car-to-pole collision with different initial impact velocities. The parameters of the LPV-ARMAX are assumed to be functions of the initial impact velocities. Instead of establishing a set of LTI models for vehicle crashes with various impact velocities, the LPV-ARMAX model is comparatively simple and applicable to predict the responses of new colli…

Adaptable data models for scalable Ambient Intelligence scenarios

2011

In most real-life scenarios for Ambient Intelligence, the need arises for scalable simulations that provide reliable sensory data to be used in the preliminary design and test phases. This works present an approach to modeling data generated by a hybrid simulator for wireless sensor networks, where virtual nodes coexist with real ones. We apply our method to real data available from a public repository and show that we can compute reliable models for the quantities measured at a given reference site, and that such models are portable to different environments, so as to obtain a complete, scalable and reliable testing environment.

A Hybrid Framework for Soft Real-Time WSN Simulation

2009

The design of a wireless sensor network is a chal- lenging task due to its intrinsically application-specific nature. Although a typical choice for testing such kind of networks requires devising ad-hoc testbeds, this is often impractical as it depends on expensive, and hard to maintain deployment of nodes. On the other hand, simulation is a valuable option, as long as the actual functioning conditions are reliably modeled, and carefully replicated. The present work describes a framework for supporting the user in early design and testing of a wireless sensor network with an augmented version of TOSSIM, the de-facto standard for simulators, that allows merging actual and virtual nodes seaml…

Real-time estimation of geometrical transformation between views in distributed smart-cameras systems

2008

In this paper, we present a method to automatically estimate the geometric relations among the different views of cameras with partially overlapping fields of view in a wireless video-surveillance system. The method uses the locations of the detected moving objects visible at the same time in two or more views. The correspondences among objects are found by comparing their appearance models based on dominant colour descriptors while the geometric transformation are computed iteratively and may be used to solve the consistent labelling problem. As a significant part of the processing is performed on the smart cameras, the method has been conceived by taking into account the limited resources…

Path Modeling and Retrieval in Distributed Video Surveillance Databases

2012

We propose a framework for querying a distributed database of video surveillance data in order to retrieve a set of likely paths of a person moving in the area under surveillance. In our framework, each camera of the surveillance system locally pro- cesses the data and stores video sequences in a storage unit and the metadata for each detected person in the distributed database. A pedestrian’s path is formulated as a dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) to model the dependencies between subsequent observa- tions of the person as he makes his way through the camera net- work. We propose a tool by which the analyst can pose queries about where a certain person appeared while moving in the site duri…
