Conventionally, mismatch negativity (MMN) is analyzed through the calculation of the difference waves. This helps to eliminate some exogenous event-related potential (ERP) components. However, this reduces the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This study aims to test whether or not the optimal digital filtering performs better than the difference waves procedure in quantitative ERP analyses in an uninterrupted sound paradigm. Effect of sport-tinted contact lenses for contrast enhancement on retinal straylight measurements

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of two tinted contact lenses (CL) designed for outdoor sports activity on the psychometric determination of retinal straylight using the compensation comparison method. METHODS: Thirteen emmetropic subjects were randomly fitted with two different tinted Nike Maxsight (Bausch & Lomb, Rochester, NY, USA) CL in one eye, while the contralateral eye was fitted with a clear lens made of the same material (Optima 38, Bausch & Lomb). Three valid straylight measurements were taken on each eye before and a few minutes after lens insertion, when lens stabilization had occurred. An Advanced Sensor for Particles in Gases Using Dynamic Light Scattering in Air as Solvent

Dynamic Light Scattering is a technique currently used to assess the particle size and size distribution by processing the scattered light intensity. Typically, the particles to be investigated are suspended in a liquid solvent. An analysis of the particular conditions required to perform a light scattering experiment on particles in air is presented in detail, together with a simple experimental setup and the data processing procedure. The results reveal that such an experiment is possible and using the setup and the procedure, both simplified to extreme, enables the design of an advanced sensor for particles and fumes that can output the average size of the particles in air.

In modern HPC systems, parallel (distributed) file systems are used to allow fast access from and to the storage infrastructure. However, I/O performance in large-scale HPC systems has failed to keep up with the increase in computational power. As a result, the I/O subsystem which also has to cope with a large number of demanding metadata operations is often the bottleneck of the entire HPC system. Studying the evolution of neural activation patterns during training of feed-forward ReLU networks

The ability of deep neural networks to form powerful emergent representations of complex statistical patterns in data is as remarkable as imperfectly understood. For deep ReLU networks, these are encoded in the mixed discrete–continuous structure of linear weight matrices and non-linear binary activations. Our article develops a new technique for instrumenting such networks to efficiently record activation statistics, such as information content (entropy) and similarity of patterns, in real-world training runs. Multimodal imaging device for skin diagnostics: improvements and tests

In our work we have demonstrated our developed skin diagnostic imaging device and its hardware and software improvements. The device was tested in laboratory, to determine the stability of light uniformity and stability, as well as the performance of data processing. The improvements were focused to fulfill all requirements of doctors-dermatologists who use this device. Results showed that light field uniformity and stability were acceptable to get chromophore concentration maps of skin malformations.
Asymmetric nanopore rectification for ion pumping, electrical power generation, and information processing applications

Single-track, asymmetric nanopores can currently be functionalised with a spatially inhomogeneous distribution of fixed charges and a variety of pore tip shapes. Optimising the asymmetric nanopore characteristics is crucial for practical applications in nanofluidics.
