Support vector machines in engineering: an overview

2014

This paper provides an overview of the support vector machine SVM methodology and its applicability to real-world engineering problems. Specifically, the aim of this study is to review the current state of the SVM technique, and to show some of its latest successful results in real-world problems present in different engineering fields. The paper starts by reviewing the main basic concepts of SVMs and kernel methods. Kernel theory, SVMs, support vector regression SVR, and SVM in signal processing and hybridization of SVMs with meta-heuristics are fully described in the first part of this paper. The adoption of SVMs in engineering is nowadays a fact. As we illustrate in this paper, SVMs can …

Managing sensor data streams in a smart home application

2020

A challenge in developing an ambient activity recognition system for use in elder care is finding a balance between the sophistication of the system and a cost structure that fits within the budgets of public and private sector healthcare organisations. Much activity recognition research in the context of elder care is based on dense networks of sensors and advanced methods, such as supervised machine learning algorithms. This paper presents the data processing aspects of an activity recognition system based on a simpler, knowledge-based unsupervised approach, designed for a sparse network of sensors. By structuring sensor data management as a streaming system, we provide a simple programmi…

Improving data quality in construction engineering projects : an action design research approach

2014

Aurthor's version of an article in the journal: Journal of Management in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1061/(ASCE)ME.1943-5479.0000202 The topic of data and information quality (DQ/IQ) is a longstanding issue of interest in both academia and practice in the construction engineering field. Poor DQ/IQ has led to poor engineering drawings that, in turn, have led to delays and, eventually, cost overruns. In this paper, a study is reported that took an action design research (ADR) approach to develop and evaluate a DQ/IQ assessment tool, which is called the information quality system (IQS), in a large global engineering and construction company. The eval…

Computing Euclidean Steiner trees over segments

2020

In the classical Euclidean Steiner minimum tree (SMT) problem, we are given a set of points in the Euclidean plane and we are supposed to find the minimum length tree that connects all these points, allowing the addition of arbitrary additional points. We investigate the variant of the problem where the input is a set of line segments. We allow these segments to have length 0, i.e., they are points and hence we generalize the classical problem. Furthermore, they are allowed to intersect such that we can model polygonal input. As in the GeoSteiner approach of Juhl et al. (Math Program Comput 10(2):487–532, 2018) for the classical case, we use a two-phase approach where we construct a superse…

Use of NOAA-AVHRR NDVI data for environmental monitoring and crop forecasting in the Sahel. Preliminary results

1992

Abstract Several studies have shown that the NDVI calculated from NOAA-AVHRR data is related to annual rainfall and primary productivity in Sahelian areas. Such correlations, however, are affected by several environmental factors and have been tested only with data accumulated during rainy seasons, which is not ideal for the prediction of crop yield. In the present study a methodology of NOAA AVHRR data processing is presented which utilizes NDVI computed only in the first part of some rainy seasons and statistically takes into account the geographical variability in land resources and atmospheric conditions. From the first results of the application of the methodology in Niger, its potenti…

Lactic acid bacteria associated with vacuum-packed cooked meat product spoilage: population analysis by rDNA-based methods.

2007

Aim:  To determine the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) implicated in bloating spoilage of vacuum-packed and refrigerated meat products. Methods and Results:  A total of 18 samples corresponding to four types of meat products, with and without spoilage symptoms, were studied. In all, 387 colonies growing on de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe, yeast glucose lactose peptone and trypticase soy yeast extract plates were identified by internal spacer region (ISR), ISR-restriction fragment length polymorphism and rapid amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis profiles as Lactobacillus (37%), Leuconostoc (43%), Carnobacterium (11%), Enterococcus (4%) and Lactococcus (2%). Leuconostoc mesenteroides dominated …

Acquisition, filtering and toll data processing system for obtaining origin-destination matrix and travel times on highways

2012

This paper presents an acquisition, filtering and real-time toll data processing system that provides a base for resolution and generation of studies and models of behavior on highways. Crossing points estimation, speed calculation, study traffic flow, travel time estimation and stopping points can also be provided. The complexity of processing with supplied data volume makes indispensable a less relevant information filtering. This filtering can be done through indicators such as speed or nullity of fields and a performance improvement job in database level using views, materializations, partitioning and parallelism. A web application called MODA has been developed. This application make e…

FO^2 with one transitive relation is decidable

2013

We show that the satisfiability problem for the two-variable first-order logic, FO^2, over transitive structures when only one relation is required to be transitive, is decidable. The result is optimal, as FO^2 over structures with two transitive relations, or with one transitive and one equivalence relation, are known to be undecidable, so in fact, our result completes the classification of FO^2-logics over transitive structures with respect to decidability. We show that the satisfiability problem is in 2-NExpTime. Decidability of the finite satisfiability problem remains open.

Monitoring road pavement performance through a novel data processing approach, accelerated pavement test results

2020

This research presents a novel performance-based interpretation method for continuous monitoring of pavement condition through the use of piezoelectric sensors. The objective of this study is to validate the compressed cumulative loading event approach, implemented in a previously developed piezoelectric sensor, for detecting subsurface fatigue cracking through full-scale accelerated pavement testing. A piezo-electric film of polyvinylidene fluoride is used to harvest the microstrain energy induced by the traffic loading at the surface. Epoxy is used to protect the sensor following a H-shape packaging. Piezoelectric sensors were exposed to approximately 1.0 million load repetitions between …

Sun Induced Fluorescence Calibration and Validation for Field Phenotyping

2018

Reliable measurements of Sun Induced Fluorescence (SIF) require a good instrument characterization as well as a complex processing chain. In this paper, we summarize the state of the art SIF retrieval methods and measurements platforms for field phenotyping. Furthermore, we use HyScreen, hyperspectral-imaging system for top of canopy measurements of SIF, as an example of the instrument requirements, data process, and data validation needed to obtain reliable measurements of SIF.
