Big Data in Medical Science–a Biostatistical View

2015

Big data” is a universal buzzword in business and science, referring to the retrieval and handling of ever-growing amounts of information. It can be assumed, for example, that a typical hospital generates hundreds of terabytes (1 TB = 1012 bytes) of data annually in the course of patient care (1). For instance, exome sequencing, which results in 5 gigabytes (1 GB = 109 bytes) of data per patient, is on the way to becoming routine (2). The analysis of such enormous volumes of information, i.e., organization and description of the data and the drawing of (scientifically valid) conclusions, can already hardly be accomplished with the traditional tools of computer science and statistics. For ex…

The availability of raw data in substance abuse scientific journals

2018

[Objective]: The availability of research data sets is an important milestone since it can enhance the dynamics of research. This study aims to analyse the PubMed Central repository to determine the availability and type of raw data sets in Substance Abuse journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports.

Communities of Communication: Making Sense of the “Social” in Social Media

2012

As social media usage permeates people's lives, an increasing portion of their daily behavior leaves digital traces to be used by researchers. Social scientists can hope to gain new insight into the previously hidden but digitally recorded aspects of our digital social lives. Beyond aggregate and individual-level studies of user behavior, the digital traces also enable scientific examination of the structure of social interaction through networks. At the same time, the large scale and networked nature of social media data pose a new set of challenges to be overcome through the development of sound methodologies. We take stock of current methodological promises and challenges in social media…

Hadron therapy information sharing prototype

2013

The European PARTNER project developed a prototypical system for sharing hadron therapy data. This system allows doctors and patients to record and report treatment-related events during and after hadron therapy. It presents doctors and statisticians with an integrated view of adverse events across institutions, using open-source components for data federation, semantics, and analysis. There is a particular emphasis upon semantic consistency, achieved through intelligent, annotated form designs. The system as presented is ready for use in a clinical setting, and amenable to further customization. The essential contribution of the work reported here lies in the novel data integration and rep…

The Role of Technology in Participative Processes

2016

Smart city is more and more, in the common feeling, the crossroad of technologies, but first and foremost, the place where humans, contexts and technologies meet and must interact. Technological systems thanks to the deep human interaction acquire an uncertain behaviour that can be hardly modelled and controlled. The resulting complexity, cannot be easily handled with the tools that are available to separate scientific fields. The interdisciplinarity that comes from the implementation of technologies and the dialogue between these and the territories requires new tools for classification and design. New urban design tools are needed allowing to identify in a standardized way adequate suppor…

Assessing complexity in learning outcomes : a comparison between the SOLO taxonomy and the model of hierarchical complexity

2015

An important aspect of higher education is to educate students who can manage complex relationships and solve complex problems. Teachers need to be able to evaluate course content with regard to complexity, as well as evaluate students’ ability to assimilate complex content and express it in the form of a learning outcome. One model for evaluating complexity is the Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes (SOLO) taxonomy. The aim of this analysis is to address the limitations of the SOLO taxonomy in detecting the more subtle differences of the learning outcomes and to clarify the concept of learning modes. This is done by analysing the SOLO taxonomy by means of the model of hierarchical comp…

Sharing Perspectives in Virtual Interaction: Review of Methods of Analysis

2003

The aim of this paper is to describe the methodological solutions made in the studies that are part of the SHAPE research project. The SHAPE project investigates the quality and nature of virtual interaction in a higher education context. The study aims to find out variables that mediate the process of collaboration, particularly the emerging processes of sharing and constructing perspectives in virtual interaction. For conducting these studies we have developed various methods and models of analysis in order to gain better understanding of the process of collaboration in virtual interaction. In this paper, we will make a review of some of the SHAPE analysis methods used in the series of ou…
