Application of neural network to predict purchases in online store

2016

A key ability of competitive online stores is effective prediction of customers’ purchase intentions as it makes it possible to apply personalized service strategy to convert visitors into buyers and increase sales conversion rates. Data mining and artificial intelligence techniques have proven to be successful in classification and prediction tasks in complex real-time systems, like e-commerce sites. In this paper we proposed a back-propagation neural network model aiming at predicting purchases in active user sessions in a Web store. The neural network training and evaluation was performed using a set of user sessions reconstructed from server log data. The proposed neural network was abl…

On the algebraic types of the Bel–Robinson tensor

2008

The Bel-Robinson tensor is analyzed as a linear map on the space of the traceless symmetric tensors. This study leads to an algebraic classification that refines the usual Petrov-Bel classification of the Weyl tensor. The new classes correspond to degenerate type I space-times which have already been introduced in literature from another point of view. The Petrov-Bel types and the additional ones are intrinsically characterized in terms of the sole Bel-Robinson tensor, and an algorithm is proposed that enables the different classes to be distinguished. Results are presented that solve the problem of obtaining the Weyl tensor from the Bel-Robinson tensor in regular cases.

Multi-scale optimisation vs. genetic algorithms in the gradient separation of diuretics by reversed-phase liquid chromatography

2019

Abstract Multi-linear gradients are a convenient solution to get separation of complex samples by modulating carefully the gradient slope, in order to accomplish the local selectivity needs for each particular solute cluster. These gradients can be designed by trial-and-error according to the chromatographer experience, but this strategy becomes quickly inappropriate for complex separations. More evolved solutions imply the sequential construction of multi-segmented gradients. However, this strategy discards part of the search space in each step of the construction and, again, cannot deal properly with very complex samples. When the complexity is too large, the only valid alternative for fi…

An Algorithm for Optimal Sizing of BESS in Smart Islands Energy Communities: the Case of Pantelleria

2021

Energy Communities (EC) are a promising solution to reduce both the carbon footprint and the impact of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) on the distribution grid. Based on a simple energy sharing principle, EC can be decisive in the next future energy transition of some problematic territories, like small islands not supplied by the main power grid. By integrating Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), it is possible to improve the EC performance. However, due to the still high BESSs unit prices, the goal of this work is to find the optimal size of BESSs, under various conditions, which combines the need to maximize shared energy and the possible revenue of EC actors. To set this multi-objecti…

Multi-physical modelling of reverse electrodialysis

2017

Abstract Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is an electrochemical membrane process that directly converts the energy associated with the concentration difference between two salt solutions into electrical energy by means of a selective controlled mixing. The physics of RED involves the interaction of several phenomena of different nature and space-time scales. Therefore, mathematical modelling and numerical simulation tools are crucial for performance prediction. In this work, a multi-physical modelling approach for the simulation of RED units was developed. A periodic portion of a single cell pair was simulated in two dimensions. Fluid dynamics was simulated by the Navier-Stokes and continuity …

Energy harvesting by waste acid/base neutralization via bipolar membrane reverse electrodialysis

2020

Bipolar Membrane Reverse Electrodialysis (BMRED) can be used to produce electricity exploiting acid-base neutralization, thus representing a valuable route in reusing waste streams. The present work investigates the performance of a lab-scale BMRED module under several operating conditions. By feeding the stack with 1 M HCl and NaOH streams, a maximum power density of ~17 W m−2 was obtained at 100 A m−2 with a 10-triplet stack with a flow velocity of 1 cm s−1, while an energy density of ~10 kWh m−3 acid could be extracted by a complete neutralization. Parasitic currents along feed and drain manifolds significantly affected the performance of the stack when equipped with a higher number of t…

Effect of different aqueous solutions of pure salts and salt mixtures in reverse electrodialysis systems for closed-loop applications

2018

Abstract Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) in a closed-loop arrangement is a viable way to convert low-grade heat into electric power. The present work experimentally investigates the use of pure salt- and equimolar two salts-water solutions as feeds in a lab-scale RED unit. RED performances were analysed in terms of Open Circuit Voltage (OCV), stack resistance and corrected power density. The pure salts and the mixtures employed were chosen via a computational analysis. Effect of feed solution velocity and concentration was investigated. Results concerning the pure salt-water experiments show that NH4Cl is the most performing salt in the concentration range probed, while higher power density v…

Testing experimental designs in liquid chromatography (I): Development and validation of a method for the comprehensive inspection of experimental de…

2020

The basis of interpretive optimisation in liquid chromatography is the prediction of resolution, from appropriate solute retention models. The reliability of the process depends critically on the quality of the experimental design. This work develops, validates and applies a general methodology aimed to evaluate the quality of any training experimental design, which will be applied in Part II to design optimisation. The methodology is based on the systematic evaluation of the uncertainties associated to the prediction of retention times in comprehensive scans of both isocratic and gradient experimental conditions. It is able to evaluate comprehensively experimental designs of arbitrary comp…

Comparison of two serially coupled column systems and optimization software in isocratic liquid chromatography for resolving complex mixtures.

2012

Although there is a great deal of stationary phases having different selectivities (even practically orthogonal selectivities), these very rarely are taken as a factor to be optimized during method development. The chromatographer selects the stationary phase usually in a trial-and-error fashion (or based on the solute nature and expected interactions), and then optimizes continuous factors as the mobile phase composition, pH, temperature and flow-rate. However, the optimization of the stationary phase nature and column length (which are discrete factors) may be interesting. In this regard, the optimization of the coupling of individual columns may yield separations that are not possible wi…

Publication Network Analysis of an Academic Family in Information Systems

2011

The study of scientific collaboration through network analysis can give interesting conclusions about the publication habits of a scientific community. Co-authorship networks represent scientific collaboration as a graph: nodes correspond to authors, edges between nodes mark joint publications (Newman 2001a,b). Scientific publishing is decentralized. Choices of co-authors and research topics are seldomly globally coordinated. Still, the structure of co-authorship networks is far from random. Co-authorship networks are governed by principles that are similar in other complex networks such as social networks (Wasserman and Faust 1994), networks of citations between scientific papers (Egghe an…
