Conventional and fuzzy comparisons of large scale land cover products: Application to CORINE, GLC2000, MODIS and GlobCover in Europe

2012

One of the major drawbacks of land cover products is the lack of interoperability among them. Since their development was driven by different national or international initiatives, they were developed for different purposes and hold diverse technical characteristics. Thus, comparison among products and quality monitoring is necessary in assessing their usefulness. This paper provides a methodology to compare global land cover maps that allows for differences in legend definitions among products. Two different approaches were considered for map comparison, a Boolean approach and a new methodology based on fuzzy set theory in which the Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) acted as a genera…

Restoration and Enhancement of Historical Stereo Photos Through Optical Flow

2021

Restoration of digital visual media acquired from repositories of historical photographic and cinematographic material is of key importance for the preservation, study and transmission of the legacy of past cultures to the coming generations. In this paper, a fully automatic approach to the digital restoration of historical stereo photographs is proposed. The approach exploits the content redundancy in stereo pairs for detecting and fixing scratches, dust, dirt spots and many other defects in the original images, as well as improving contrast and illumination. This is done by estimating the optical flow between the images, and using it to register one view onto the other both geometrically …

PLC security and critical infrastructure protection

2013

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are the most important components embedded in Industrial Control Systems (ICSs). ICSs have achieved highest standards in terms of efficiency and performance. As a result of that, higher portion of infrastructure in industries has been automated for the comfort of human beings. Therefore, protection of such systems is crucial. It is important to investigate the vulnerabilities of ICSs in order to solve the threats and attacks against critical infrastructure to protect human lives and assets. PLC is the basic building block of an ICS. If PLCs are exploited, overall system will be exposed to the threat. Many believed that PLCs are secured devices due to it…

Decentralized Coordination System for Multiple AGVs in a Structured Environment

2011

Abstract In this paper, we propose a decentralized coordination algorithm for safe and efficient management of a group of mobile robots following predefined paths in a dynamic industrial environment. The proposed algorithm is based on shared resources and proved to guarantee ordered traffic flows avoiding collisions and deadlocks. In consistency with the model of distributed robotic systems (DRS), no centralized mechanism, synchronized clock, shared memory or ground support is needed. A local inter-robot communication is required among a small number of spatially adjacent robotic units.

The complexity of finite model reasoning in description logics

2005

AbstractWe analyse the complexity of finite model reasoning in the description logic ALCQI, i.e., ALC augmented with qualifying number restrictions, inverse roles, and general TBoxes. It turns out that all relevant reasoning tasks such as concept satisfiability and ABox consistency are ExpTime-complete, regardless of whether the numbers in number restrictions are coded unarily or binarily. Thus, finite model reasoning with ALCQI is not harder than standard reasoning with ALCQI.

Data service platform for sentinel-2 surface reflectance and value-added products: System use and examples

2016

This technical note presents the first Sentinel-2 data service platform for obtaining atmospherically-corrected images and generating the corresponding value-added products for any land surface on Earth (http://s2.boku.eodc.eu/). Using the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Sen2Cor algorithm, the platform processes ESA’s Level-1C top-of-atmosphere reflectance to atmospherically-corrected bottom-of-atmosphere (BoA) reflectance (Level-2A). The processing runs on-demand, with a global coverage, on the Earth Observation Data Centre (EODC), which is a public-private collaborative IT infrastructure in Vienna (Austria) for archiving, processing, and distributing Earth observation (EO) data (http://www.…

A user-friendly software for sustainable management of urban areas

2002

The need to collect and process information on urban ecosystem requires the introduction of innovative scientific tools, in order to analyze the current urban factors and to optimize the energetic and environmental profile of urban systems, with regard to carrying capacity and territorial needs and vocations. Addressing these needs requires two main elements: (i) public availability of transparent data; and (ii) availability of interactive software designed to make easier exploration of data, models and results. The aim of the present paper is to show a user-friendly software, which is designed as a decision support system for policy makers in the multi-criteria selection among different pl…

Application of latent nestling method using Coloured Petri Nets for the Fault Diagnosis in the wind turbine subsets

2008

This paper presents an application example using the lating nestling method for the fault diagnosis based in the use of coloured Petri nets, to a lubrication and cooling system in the wind turbinepsilas gearbox with a critical subsystem as far as failure probability. It demonstrate the synthesis capacity of the method for any model of diagnosis and isolation, giving as opposed to know the contributed advantages other methodologies, as those based in finite state machine.

Distraplan: a flexible tool for strategical planning of electrical distribution systems considering distributed generation.

2005

The paper here presented describes and shows DISTRAPLAN (Distribution Strategical Planning), software tool for strategical planning of distribu tion networks at Medium and Low voltage. The software aims at the identification and comparison of network configur ations, optimized in the long term with identification of special features in relation to the main technical-economical-environmental aspects, such as: the number of HV/MV and MV/LV substations, total length of the MV and LV lines and relevant sections, maximum required energy and power, instal lation and losses costs, etc. DISTRAPLAN, in both the main procedures into which it is articulated (strategical planning and evaluation of the …

Barriers to Integrated Marketing Communications: The Case of Latvia (small markets)

2012

Abstract No promotional tool should be used in isolation or without regard to the others; hence there is a trend toward integrated marketing communications. Many conclusions of researchers and most of the studies justify the effectiveness of the IMC and point to multiple advantages in comparison to the classical MC. In comparison to the classical MC, the IMC also in small markets declare exigency and ensure higher effectiveness. But the development and application of the IMC also has several problems or barriers. The purpose of this study is to investigate barriers to Integrated Marketing Communications in Latvian market (small markets). According to accomplished interrogation, the most imp…
