High-order harmonic emission from a three-level atom in a laser field

Abstract The spectrum emitted by a three-level atom in the presence of a weak laser field is given together with the population dynamics and the phase of the Fourier transform of the acceleration. Calculations show that the spectrum can be very different from that emitted by a two-level atom. When the trapping conditions are obtained, the coupling to the third level can result in a large change in the spectrum.

Transverse effects in a thin slab of material with local-field induced intrinsic optical bistability

We consider a thin slab of dense material exhibiting local-field induced intrinsic optical bistability irradiated by a transversely uniform optical field (holding beam). We study the transverse effects that can arise when local excitations are created by means of a narrow optical beam (writing beam). We show that whereas diffraction effects are negligible, diffusion effects make the excitation-domain walls to move inward or outward in the transverse direction, with a speed that depends on the holding-beam intensity and the diffusion coefficient. Efficient Iterative Solution of Time-harmonic Scattering by Objects in Layered Fluid

We consider the computation of time-harmonic acoustic scattering by sound-soft or elastic objects in layered media. An example of such problem is the scattering by a mine buried in sediment. The computational domain can be tens or hundreds of meters long while the target requires modeling of details smaller than one centimeter. A discretized problem can have several billion degrees of freedom.

Calculating thermodynamic properties from fluctuations at small scales.

We show how density and energy fluctuations of small nonperiodic systems embedded in a reservoir can be used to determine macroscopic thermodynamic properties like the enthalpy density and the thermodynamic correction factor. For mixtures, the same formalism leads to a very convenient method to obtain so-called total correlation function integrals, also often referred to as Kirkwood-Buff integrals. Using finite size scaling, the properties obtained for small systems can be extrapolated to the macroscopic system limit provided that the system is sufficiently far from the critical point. A Lagrangian Approach to the Electromechanical Aspects of the Superconducting Magnets for Maglev

The superconducting magnets for Maglev are exposed during their operation to strong time dependent fields, which can cause losses and therefore can affect the stability of the magnets. In this work the electromechanical behaviour of a superconducting magnet, which is used as field magnet of a linear synchronous motor, is examined.

Post-Newtonian constraints onf(R)cosmologies in metric and Palatini formalism

We compute the complete post-Newtonian limit of both the metric and Palatini formulations of $f(R)$ gravities using a scalar-tensor representation. By comparing the predictions of these theories with laboratory and solar system experiments, we find a set of inequalities that any lagrangian $f(R)$ must satisfy. The constraints imposed by those inequalities allow us to find explicit bounds to the possible nonlinear terms of the lagrangian. We conclude that in both formalisms the lagrangian $f(R)$ must be almost linear in $R$ and that corrections that grow at low curvatures are incompatible with observations. Flavor of cosmic neutrinos preserved by ultralight dark matter

Within the standard propagation scenario, the flavor ratios of high-energy cosmic neutrinos at neutrino telescopes are expected to be around the democratic benchmark resulting from hadronic sources, $\left( 1 : 1 : 1 \right)_\oplus$. We show how the coupling of neutrinos to an ultralight dark matter complex scalar field would induce an effective neutrino mass that could lead to adiabatic neutrino propagation. This would result in the preservation at the detector of the production flavor composition of neutrinos at sources. Metric-Palatini gravity unifying local constraints and late-time cosmic acceleration

We present a novel approach to modified theories of gravity that consists of adding to the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian an f(R) term constructed a la Palatini. Using the respective dynamically equivalent scalar-tensor representation, we show that the theory can pass the Solar System observational constraints even if the scalar field is very light. This implies the existence of a long-range scalar field, which is able to modify the cosmological and galactic dynamics, but leaves the Solar System unaffected. We also verify the absence of instabilities in perturbations and provide explicit models which are consistent with local tests and lead to the late-time cosmic acceleration.
