Electron crystallography and non-linear optics

1999

Electron crystallography can be used to obtain specific information about molecular parameters such as the polarisability, dipole moment, and hyperpolarisability. In this, work we show how a combination of quantum mechanics and simulation methods can be used to solve several unknown organic structures and how the calculated molecular parameters can be used to predict the corresponding physical properties of the crystals.

Dynamic reliability indices for k-out-of-n multi-state system

2005

A multi-state system k-out-of-n is one of basic models in reliability analysis. In this system, k is the minimum number of n components that must work for the system to work and both the system and its components can have more than two states. A structure function declares relation between system and component states uniquely. New algorithm for reliability analysis of the k-out-of-n multi-state system is proposed in this paper. We use two tools for examine this system: (a) structure function for the system description; (b) direct partial logic derivatives for analysis this system. New algorithm for reliability analysis of the multi-state system k-out-of-n is allowed to calculate the probabi…

Comparison of two serially coupled column systems and optimization software in isocratic liquid chromatography for resolving complex mixtures.

2012

Although there is a great deal of stationary phases having different selectivities (even practically orthogonal selectivities), these very rarely are taken as a factor to be optimized during method development. The chromatographer selects the stationary phase usually in a trial-and-error fashion (or based on the solute nature and expected interactions), and then optimizes continuous factors as the mobile phase composition, pH, temperature and flow-rate. However, the optimization of the stationary phase nature and column length (which are discrete factors) may be interesting. In this regard, the optimization of the coupling of individual columns may yield separations that are not possible wi…

Interoperability between Distributed Systems and Web-Services Composition

2009

An information system is a multi-axis system characterized by a “data” axis, a “behavioral” axis, and a “communication” axis. The data axis corresponds to the structural and schematic technologies used to store data into the system. The behavioral axis represents management and production processes carried out by the system and corresponding technologies. The processes can interact with the data to extract, generate, and store data. The communication axis relates to the network used to exchange data and activate processes between geographically distant users or machines. Nowadays, technologies required for interoperability are extended to deal with the semantic aspect of the information sys…

Reports and other PDF Documents

2014

Stata users often need to combine text, tables, and figures. The author's command, lpdf, generates reports and other PDF documents. lpdf compiles text stored in global macros, tables stored as dataset tables or LATEX table input files, and figures stored as Stata graphs or PDF figure files. LATEX must be installed, but familiarity with LATEX is not necessary. lpdf performs every step through Stata and with Stata syntax. It generates documents in report or article style and portrait or landscape orientation. The default author name, document title, and date can be modified. Further format options include the font and margin sizes. For each table and figure, the width and layout can be adapt…

Towards Introducing User Preferences in OLAP Reporting Tool

2012

This paper presents an OLAP reporting tool and an approach for determining and processing user OLAP preferences, which are useful for generating recommendations on potentially interesting reports. We discuss the metadata layers of the reporting tool including our proposed OLAP preferences metamodel, which supports various scenarios of formulating preferences of two different types: schema-specific and report-specific. The process of semantic metadata usage at the stage of formulating user preferences is also considered. The methods for processing schema-specific and report-specific OLAP preferences are outlined.

The Eminent Russian – German Chemist Friedrich Konrad Beilstein (1838-1906) in the Literature between the 19th and 21st Centuries

2021

Friedrich Konrad Beilstein (1838-1906) was one of the most prominent chemists of the second half of the nineteenth century. His life and scientific achievements were described in the literature published between the 19th and 21st centuries in different countries. The purpose of this paper is to familiarize readers with the important events in the life of Beilstein and his research activities, in particular some of his experimental research results, as well as his selected publications. In addition, the names of authors of biographies or biographical notes about Beilstein, published in 1890-2018 are presented.

Adopting XML for Large-Scale Information

2011

This book has presented many different ways to encode information in XML format and the purposes for doing so. In this concluding chapter we consider problems related to managing XML information assets and the methods available to address those problems. Approaches for persistently storing XML data can be divided into file storage and database storage, and the research community has been especially active in designing new solutions for XML databases. However, adoption of XML often means massive migration procedures from some legacy data into the XML format; examples of migration cases are given. While describing the problems related to adopting XML, we give examples of the kinds of data fo…

A novel policy-driven reversible anonymisation scheme for XML-based services

2015

Author's version of an article in the journal: Information Systems. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.is.2014.05.007 This paper proposes a reversible anonymisation scheme for XML messages that supports fine-grained enforcement of XACML-based privacy policies. Reversible anonymisation means that information in XML messages is anonymised, however the information required to reverse the anonymisation is cryptographically protected in the messages. The policy can control access down to octet ranges of individual elements or attributes in XML messages. The reversible anonymisation protocol effectively implements a multi-level privacy and security based approach, s…

A database for historical pigments through handheld instrumentation

2020

Portable instrumentation is largely used in archaeometry for in-field measurements at museums and archaeological sites. The historic evolution of pigments is closely related to the technology developments in past cultures and provides relevant clues regarding their knowledge advancement. Here, a systematic study of 26 historical powdered pigments was carried out through a combined handheld instrumentation for X-ray Fluorescence. Chemical identification was carried out through a set of instrumentation produced by different manufacturers. Their performances are compared on the same set of samples to identify best practices for the study of historical pigments. A database of organic and inorga…
