Monitoring fungal biodiversity – towards an integrated approach
2012
Biodiversity information databases and platforms have seen considerable progress in recent years. They have a high potential in conservation science in general, but may be even more revolutionary in relation to poorly known species groups such as fungi, whose practical conservation work has been jeopardised by scattered and poorly controlled information. We review the tradition of collecting information on species occurrences in mycology and discuss the characteristics of the present fungal biodiversity information databases. With a special focus on population trend monitoring of fruit body producing macrofungi, we emphasise several unrealised opportunities of these databases and point out …
Genetic database development for the characterisation of Sicilian sheep population
2019
The most representative sheep in Sicily are Belicina, Comisana, Pinzirita, Barbarescaand the crossbred derived sheep from all this species. In this study, the allelic frequencies of the Sicilian sheep population were investigated. It currently represents the best way to determine the genetic identity and/or family even with limited amounts of sample or when the DNA is degraded. The aim of the study was to provide a reference data bank and to evaluate a microsatellite panel for pedigree analysis as suggested by the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG). There are various studies on European sheep, but few datasets were developed on the population of Sicilian sheep. The reference d…
Scatter search for an uncapacitated p-hub median problem
2015
Scatter search is a population-based method that has been shown to yield high-quality outcomes for combinatorial optimization problems. It uses strategies for combining solution vectors that have proved effective in a variety of problem settings. In this paper, we present a scatter search implementation for an NP -hard variant of the classic p-hub median problem. Specifically, we tackle the uncapacitated r-allocation p-hub median problem, which consists of minimizing the cost of transporting the traffics between nodes of a network through special facilities that act as transshipment points. This problem has a significant number of applications in practice, such as the design of transportati…
Population and Query Interface for a Content-Based Video Database
2002
In this paper we describe the first full implementation of a content-based indexing and retrieval system for MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 videos. We consider a video as a collection of spatiotemporal segments called video objects; each video object is a sequence of video object planes. A set of representative video object planes is used to index each video object. During the database population, the operator, using a semi-automatic outlining tool we developed, manually selects video objects and insert some semantical information. Low-level visual features like color, texture, motion and geometry are automatically computed. The system has been implemented on a commercial relational DBMS and is based on…
Influence of Bond Fixation in Benzo-Annulated N-Salicylideneanilines and Their ortho-C(O)X Derivatives (X = CH3, NH2, OCH3) on Tautomeric Equilibria …
2007
1H, 13C, and 15N NMR spectra show that an ortho-C(=O)X group present in the molecules of N-salicylideneanthranilamide (X = NH2), methyl N-salicylideneanthranilate (X = OCH3), N-salicylidene-o-aminoacetophenone (X = CH3), and their benzo analogues have only a minor effect on the tautomeric OH/NH-equilibrium in solution. Only two of three possible tautomers were detected. Lability of the absent form was proved by theoretical calculations. Calculated energies show that the enolimino form (OH) is less stable than the enaminone (NH) form only for dibenzo-annulated N-salicylideneanilines. The population of each species in the tautomeric mixture was found to be inversely proportional to its energy…
Capacity building in clinical and molecular characterization of rare neurodegenerative diseases through the development of a local register and impro…
2020
Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are very polymorphic and affect people of all ages. They concern both rare diseases and more common diseases. Improving knowledge of NDs in the French Caribbean region requires special attention because of the unique environmental and genetic background of its populations. In Martinique, there is a huge need for scientific research on rare NDs. While epidemiological and clinical research has increased over the past decade in the French West Indies, there is still little or no data on the genetics of NDs in these regions. The advent of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) on a global scale has the potential to make a difference in this field, provided that techno…
An Initial Security Analysis of the Personal Transaction Protocol
2003
Our society is becoming increasingly dependent on the rapid access and processing of information. The number of handheld mobile devices with access to the Internet and network-based software and services is exploding. Research indicates [1] that by the end of 2002 there will be over 1 billion mobile phone owners globally with Internet access, and that this number is going to grow exponentially in the nearest future. By 2006 the number of interconnected mobile device users is expected exceed the worldwide Internet subscriber population. It is estimated that in a few years there will be three times as many of these devices worldwide as personal computers.
Training machine learning models with synthetic data improves the prediction of ventricular origin in outflow tract ventricular arrhythmias
2022
In order to determine the site of origin (SOO) in outflow tract ventricular arrhythmias (OTVAs) before an ablation procedure, several algorithms based on manual identification of electrocardiogram (ECG) features, have been developed. However, the reported accuracy decreases when tested with different datasets. Machine learning algorithms can automatize the process and improve generalization, but their performance is hampered by the lack of large enough OTVA databases. We propose the use of detailed electrophysiological simulations of OTVAs to train a machine learning classification model to predict the ventricular origin of the SOO of ectopic beats. We generated a synthetic database of 12-l…
Elliptical Fourier Descriptors for shape retrieval in biological images
2002
The retrieval of information in a standard database can be obtained in different ways and in some cases a number of steps are necessary to extract the sought for information. More difficulties exist when we are looking for a pictorial information in a database. This paper presents a method for finding an image in a biological database based on elliptical Fourier descriptors. Fourier descriptors are considered here as textual information and a distance function is proposed to evaluate the best result. Fourier descriptors and distance function are used to retrieve image in pictorial database.
