Comparing normal means: new methods for an old problem
2007
Comparing the means of two normal populations is an old problem in mathematical statistics, but there is still no consensus about its most appropriate solution. In this paper we treat the problem of comparing two normal means as a Bayesian decision problem with only two alternatives: either to accept the hypothesis that the two means are equal, or to conclude that the observed data are, under the assumed model, incompatible with that hypothesis. The combined use of an information-theory based loss function, the intrinsic discrepancy (Bernardo and Rueda 2002}, and an objective prior function, the reference prior \citep{Bernardo 1979; Berger and Bernardo 1992), produces a new solution to this…
A Rule-Based Multi-agent System for Local Traffic Management
2009
Road Traffic presents a high dynamism which makes necessary the development of traffic management and control strategies to improve traffic flows and more important, road safety. So it is needed the use of intelligent systems to support traffic organizations and road operators to cope with incidents. In this paper we introduce a local autonomous system for traffic management. This way, though there could be a breakdown in the communications between the local system and the TCC, the local system will be able to warn the road users in case of incidents. The system uses multiagent technology to work with the specific characteristics of traffic domain. The expert MAS system is ruled-based that …
A Distributed approach to the Remote Control and Programming Improvement
2006
The remote control of industrial plants through networks is becoming very important nowadays but it involves several issues that can degrade the performance and usability of the remote plant. This paper presents a distributed architecture improving a remote programming system which allows users to control and to program a plant remotely. The control system is based on a client/server architecture with many user interfaces that control the plant. The remote programming language is a mix of Java and client/server protocol in order to simplify the developing and to avoid the protocol/language translation. In order to obtain more efficiency, the program is developed in the client side and it is…
Randazzo nell'opera di Walter Leopold
2022
In 2021 a group of researchers and students on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean toasted ten years of The Medieval Kingdom of Sicily Image Database project (https://kos.aahvs.duke.edu/). This collection of historical images of medieval monuments in Southern Italy was launched in 2011. Its purpose was to document the complex history of this highly diverse patrimony with visual documents that testify to the cultural richness of the Italian South. Online since October 2016, the project was fostered by Caroline Bruzelius at Duke University (NC). It has now become an invaluable research and study tool thanks to her charisma and her indefatigable enthusiasm in the face of ever-new intellectual cha…
Guiding the modeller: organizing and selecting experimental data for single cell models using the CoCoDat database
2003
Collating, organizing and selecting quantitative experimental data are time-consuming tasks necessary for building and constraining biophysically realistic neuronal models. The CoCoDat (Collation of Cortical Data) database has been designed as an advanced environment for storing, organizing and retrieving detailed, uninterpreted quantitative data on morphology, electrophysiology and connectivity from the published literature according to neurophysiological concepts. All experimental data are linked to exact bibliographical references and detailed records of procedures used in the experiments that produced the data. We demonstrate the usefulness of CoCoDat for implementation of an example mo…
Global Atmospheric Profiles from Reanalysis Information (GAPRI): a new database for earth surface temperature retrieval
2015
This paper presents the Global Atmospheric Profiles derived from Reanalysis Information GAPRI database, which was designed for earth surface temperature retrieval. GAPRI is a comprehensive compilation of selected atmospheric vertical profiles at global scale which can be used for radiative transfer simulation in order to obtain generalized algorithms to estimate land surface temperature LST. GAPRI includes information on geopotential height, atmospheric pressure, air temperature, and relative humidity derived from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis data from year 2011. The atmospheric profiles are structured for 29 vertical levels and extracted from a global …
The ABCflux database: Arctic-Boreal CO2 flux observations and ancillary information aggregated to monthly time…
2021
Abstract. Past efforts to synthesize and quantify the magnitude and change in carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems across the rapidly warming Arctic-Boreal Zone (ABZ) have provided valuable information, but were limited in their geographical and temporal coverage. Furthermore, these efforts have been based on data aggregated over varying time periods, often with only minimal site ancillary data, thus limiting their potential to be used in large-scale carbon budget assessments. To bridge these gaps, we developed a standardized monthly database of Arctic-Boreal CO2 fluxes (ABCflux) that aggregates in-situ measurements of terrestrial net ecosystem CO2 exchange and its derived …
Predictors of smoking cessation among smokers with cardiovascular diseases and risks factors in the French smoking cessation services national databa…
2022
Background: Smoking represents a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), particularly in women. The smoking prevalence in France is among the highest in Europe, and the identification of factors associated with smoking cessation in high-risk CV populations remains poorly studied, specifically when potential sex-disparities might exist. The objective of this work was firstly to describe the current state of knowledge on the association between tobacco consumption and CVD risk in women, through a literature review. Then, using the French national smoking cessation consultations database - CDTnet, to describe the socio-demographic profile, medical profile and smoking be…
Effectively and efficiently supporting crowd-enabled databases via NoSQL paradigms
2013
In this paper we provide an overview of the Hints From the Crowd (HFC) project, whose main goal is to build a NoSQL database system for large collections of product reviews; the database is queried by expressing a natural language sentence; the result is a list of products ranked based on the relevance of reviews w.r.t. the natural language sentence. The best ranked products in the result list can be seen as the best hints for the user based on crowd opinions (the reviews). The HFC prototype has been developed as a web application, independent of the particular application domain of the collected product reviews. Queries are performed by evaluating a text-based ranking metric for sets of re…
The HisClima database: historical weather logs for automatic transcription and information extraction
2021
Knowing the weather and atmospheric conditions from the past can help weather researchers to generate models like the ones used to predict how weather conditions are likely to change as global temperatures continue to rise. Many historical weather records are available from the past registered on a systemic basis. Historical weather logs were registered in ships, when they were on the high seas, recording daily weather conditions such as: wind speed, temperature, coordinates, etc. These historical documents represent an important source of knowledge with valuable information to extract climatic information of several centuries ago. This paper presents a database for researching about the ca…
