openSNP–A Crowdsourced Web Resource for Personal Genomics
2014
Genome-Wide Association Studies are widely used to correlate phenotypic traits with genetic variants. These studies usually compare the genetic variation between two groups to single out certain Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) that are linked to a phenotypic variation in one of the groups. However, it is necessary to have a large enough sample size to find statistically significant correlations. Direct-To-Consumer (DTC) genetic testing can supply additional data: DTC-companies offer the analysis of a large amount of SNPs for an individual at low cost without the need to consult a physician or geneticist. Over 100,000 people have already been genotyped through Direct-To-Consumer genet…
Nanodiamond-Rich Layer across Three Continents Consistent with Major Cosmic Impact at 12,800 Cal BP
2014
© 2014 by The University of Chicago. All rights reserved. A major cosmic-impact event has been proposed at the onset of the Younger Dryas (YD) cooling episode at ≈12,800 ± 150 years before present, forming the YD Boundary (YDB) layer, distributed over 150 million km2 on four continents. In 24 dated stratigraphic sections in 10 countries of the Northern Hemisphere, the YDB layer contains a clearly defined abundance peak in nanodiamonds (NDs), a major cosmic-impact proxy. Observed ND polytypes include cubic diamonds, lonsdaleite-like crystals, and diamond-like carbon nanoparticles, called n-diamond and i-carbon. The ND abundances in bulk YDB sediments ranged up to ≈500 ppb (mean: 200 ppb) and…
Construction of a webgis tool based on a gis semiautomated processing for the localization of p2g plants in sicily (Italy)
2021
The recent diffusion of RES (Renewable Energy Sources), considering the electric energy produced by photovoltaic and wind plants, brought to light the problem of the unpredictable nature of wind and solar energy. P2G (Power to Gas) implementation seems to be the right solution, transforming curtailed energy in hydrogen. The choice of the settlement of P2G plants is linked to many factors like the distances between the gas grid and the settlement of RES plants, the transportation networks, the energy production, and population distribution. In light of this, the implementation of a Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) into a Geographic Information System (GIS) processing represents a good strategy …
Automated system for data acquisition and monitoring
2017
The Environmental management has become, with the development of human society a very important issue. There have been multiple systems that automatically monitors the environment. In this paper we propose a system that integrates GIS software and data acquisition software. In addition the proposed system implements new AHP multicriteria method that can get an answer online on each pollutant influence on limited geographical area in which the monitors. Factors pollutants of limited geographical areas are taken automatically by specific sensors through acquisition board. Labview software, with virtual instrument created by transferring them into a database Access. Access database they are ta…
Quality Schemes Regulation
2014
As it was discussed in the previous chapter, the EU direct protection system covers IGOs in relation to agricultural products and foodstuffs and is divided in four parts each of them being regulated in a separate legal act in the form of a regulation. Due to that regulatory approach, each of these separate regulations will be discussed separately in this and the next three chapters. This chapter examines the Quality Schemes Regulation covering, inter alia, IGOs in relation to agricultural products and foodstuffs except spirits (examined in Chap. 7), wine sector products (Chap. 8), and aromatised wines (Chap. 9) (hereinafter all these types of goods (products) referred to as agricultural pro…
The database of evidential markers in European languages. A bird’s eye view of the conception of the database (the template and problems hidden benea…
2010
Abstract This introduction not only browses through the contributions of the whole issue, but also attempts to set the stage for a cross-linguistically unified study of evidentiality markers to be registered in a database. This endeavor has so far been restricted to European languages. We assume evidentiality to be a conceptual domain and, on this basis, want to account for diverse units irrespective of their morphological format and status in the particular language’s grammar. Evidential markers are claimed to be locatable on a lexicon – grammar cline, ranging from distinct lexical units (accessed holistically) to grammatical morphology (having been the subject of traditional descriptions …
Database Dry Grasslands in the Nordic and Baltic Region
2012
The Database Dry Grasslands in the Nordic and Baltic Region (GIVD ID EU-00-002) is an initiative of the respective regional subgroup of the European Dry Grassland Group (EDGG). Its aim is to compile the available published and unpublished vegetation-plot data of dry grasslands and related syntaxa (mainly vegetation classes Koelerio-Corynephoretea, Festuco-Brometea, and Trifolio-Geranietea) from the study region (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, NW Russia, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, N Poland, and NE Germany). The only requirement for inclusion is that the plot size is between 1 and 100 m2. The database is managed under Sort 4.0, but shall be transferred to TURBOVEG soon. Presently…
Use of Geospatial Analyses for Semantic Reasoning
2010
International audience; This work focuses on the integration of the spatial analyses for semantic reasoning in order to compute new axioms of an existing OWL ontology. To make it concrete, we have defined Spatial Built-ins, an extension of existing Built-ins of the SWRL rule language. It permits to run deductive rules with the help of a translation rule engine. Thus, the Spatial SWRL rules are translated to standard SWRL rules. Once the spatial functions of the Spatial SWRL rules are computed with the help of a spatial database system, the resulting translated rules are computed with a reasoning engine such as Racer, Jess or Pellet.
Trade Openness and the Skill Premium An Inverted - UU Relation?
2016
Relying on linked employer–employee data from the German manufacturing sector in 1996–2010, I study the relation between the share of exporting establishments and the skill premium within narrowly defined industries. I document that the skill premium tends to be higher in industries with a larger share of exporting establishments. However, once unobserved industry heterogeneity is taken into account, the empirical evidence suggests an inverted-‘U’ relation between the share of exporting establishments and the skill premium.
