DIAMIN: a software library for the distributed analysis of large-scale molecular interaction networks

2022

AbstractBackgroundHuge amounts of molecular interaction data are continuously produced and stored in public databases. Although many bioinformatics tools have been proposed in the literature for their analysis, based on their modeling through different types of biological networks, several problems still remain unsolved when the problem turns on a large scale.ResultsWe propose , that is, a high-level software library to facilitate the development of applications for the efficient analysis of large-scale molecular interaction networks. relies on distributed computing, and it is implemented in Java upon the framework Apache Spark. It delivers a set of functionalities implementing different ta…

LEXOP: a lexical database providing orthography-phonology statistics for French monosyllabic words.

1999

During the last 20 years, psycholinguistic research has identified many variables that influence reading and spelling processes. We describe a new computerized lexical database, LEXOP, which provides quantitative descriptors about the relations between orthography and phonology for French monosyllabic words. Three main classes of variables are considered: consistency of print-to-sound and sound-to-print associations, frequency of orthography-phonology correspondences, and word neighborhood characteristics.

Synthesis and chemical characterization of CuII, NiII and ZnII complexes of 3,5-bis(2′-pyridyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole and 3-(2′-pyridyl)5-(phenyl)-1,2,4-o…

2011

Abstract The synthesis and structural characterization of Ni II , Cu II and Zn II complexes of two chelating 1,2,4-oxadiazole ligands, namely 3,5-bis(2′-pyridyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole (bipyOXA) and 3-(2′-pyridyl)5-(phenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole (pyOXA), is here reported. The formed hexacoordinated metal complexes are [M(bipyOXA) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ](ClO 4 ) 2 and [M(pyOXA) 2 (ClO 4 ) 2 ], respectively (M = Ni, Cu, Zn). X-ray crystallography, 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy and C, N, H elemental analysis data concord in attributing them an octahedral coordination geometry. The two coordinated pyOXA ligands assume a trans coplanar disposition, while the two bipyOXA ligands are not. The latter result is a possib…

Idiomatic expressions and anaphoric reference in functional discourse grammar

2018

I saw this somewhere else: the Spanish Ambiguous Words (SAW) database

2017

The present paper describes the Spanish Ambiguous Words (SAW) database, which comprises 210 words (133 polysemous and 77 homographs). Three-hundred and fifteen Spanish university students took part in the study on which SAW is based. First, subjective word meanings and senses were collected by means of a meaning retrieval task. Two judges then assigned participants’ responses to different categories of meaning according to lexicographical and statistical criteria. Results showed that, while there was a relatively high relationship between the number of senses included in the dictionary and those provided by participants (r = .62), regression analyses on lexical decision and naming times rev…

The Marginalisation of Finely Tuned Semiotic Practices and Misunderstandings in Relation to (Signed) Languages and Deafness

2014

AbstractWhen people draw on the available modal resources (e.g. gestures) in specific contexts over time, those resources come to display regularities. The more a community uses and regulates those resources, the more fully and finely articulated their regularities and patterns become. Modes, organised by regular means of representation, are constantly transformed by users, depending on what the community needs. This paper discusses the way semiotic resources and practices, i.e. social actions with a history, used by sign language signers in visually oriented communities, as well as the research in such domains, have been marginalised. The paper reflects some of the main reasons for such ma…

The Byzantine Scholia to Aristotle and Empedocles’ Cosmic Cycle

2020

Abstract Some Byzantine scholia to Aristotle offer numerical indications on the time-length of some phases of Empedocles’ cosmic cycle. In recent years an interpretation has become established, according to which the scholia pro-vide evidence for a cycle with three periods: the Sphairos and two opposite phases of Love’s and Strife’s unfolding. This paper emphasizes, in contrast, that the picture of the cycle we can draw from the scholia is not as clear-cut as generally supposed. On the contrary, the scholia can be adapted to dif-ferent, even contrasting, reconstructions of the Empedoclean cycle. Moreo-ver, they seem to challenge the received idea of Empedocles’ cycle as the Sphairos and two…

Synthesis and characterization of lithocholic acid derived dipyrromethanes: precursors for pyrrole-steroidal macrocycles

2004

Abstract Three steroidal dipyrromethanes, 3,3,24,24-tetrakis(pyrrol-2-yl)-5β-cholane 1 , 3,3-bis(pyrrol-2-yl)-5β-cholan-24-oic acid 2 , and methyl 3,3-bis(pyrrol-2-yl)-5β-cholan-24-oate 3 , have been prepared from 3α-hydroxy-5β-cholan-24-oic acid (lithocholic acid) 4 in good overall yields. The structures of 1 – 3 have been fully characterized by 1 H, 13 C, PFG DQF 1 H– 1 H COSY, 1 H– 1 H ROESY, 13 C DEPT-135, PFG 1 H– 13 C HMQC, PFG 1 H– 13 C HMBC, and PFG 1 H– 15 N HMBC NMR spectra. Their molecular weights and compositions have been determined by ESI-TOF and EI mass spectra, and elemental analyses. The energetically optimised geometry and isotropic 13 C NMR chemical shifts of 3,3,24,24-te…

Hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence in patients with curative resection or ablation: impact of HCV eradication does not depend on the use of interfer…

2016

none 48 no Background: In HCV-infected cirrhotic patients with successfully treated early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the time to HCC recurrence and the effects of sustained viral eradication (SVR) by interferon (IFN)-based or IFN-free regimens on HCC recurrence remain unclear. Aim: To perform an indirect comparison of time to recurrence (TTR) in patients with successfully treated early HCC and active HCV infection with those of patients with SVR by IFN-based and by IFN-free regimens. Methods: We evaluated 443 patients with HCV-related cirrhosis and Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer Stage A/0 HCC who had a complete radiological response after curative resection or ablation. Active HCV infec…
