A simple and efficient face detection algorithm for video database applications

2000

The objective of this work is to provide a simple and yet efficient tool to detect human faces in video sequences. This information can be very useful for many applications such as video indexing and video browsing. In particular the paper focuses on the significant improvements made to our face detection algorithm presented by Albiol, Bouman and Delp (see IEEE Int. Conference on Image Processing, Kobe, Japan, 1999). Specifically, a novel approach to retrieve skin-like homogeneous regions is presented, which is later used to retrieve face images. Good results have been obtained for a large variety of video sequences. Peer Reviewed

Bibliometric profile of the global scientific research on multiple sclerosis (2003-2012)

2015

[Background and objectives]: The aim of this paper is to analyse the scientific research on multiple sclerosis using a bibliographic analysis of articles published during the period 2003-2012. [Methods]: The items under study were obtained from the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-E) database, which was accessed through the Web of Science (WOS) platform. All records with the term multiple sclerosis in the title, plus all articles published in the journals Multiple Sclerosis and Multiple Sclerosis Journal, were analysed. [Results]: A total of 9778 articles, with 160,966 citations, were retrieved on multiple sclerosis, and the majority of the articles were published in Multiple Sclerosis …

iViaggio: the app for safe traveling.

2019

he number of people travelling internationally increases year after year, mainly due to the more and more affordable cost of travelling and to the evergreater ease of transportation. Nowadays, any destination can be reached within 24 hours by plane, and the improvement of economic conditions facilitates both business and leisure travelling, as a matter of fact, according to data from the World Tourism Organization, the number of international trips is expected to increase by 3% to 4% per year.1 However, international travelling poses various health risks depending on travelers’ health conditions and the type of trip undertaken. Indeed, travelers may experience sudden changes in altitude, hu…

Re: Infertility Etiologies Are Genetically and Clinically Linked with Other Diseases in Single Meta-Diseases.

2015

The present review aims to ascertain whether different infertility etiologies share particular genes and/or molecular pathways with other pathologies and are associated with distinct and particular risks of later-life morbidity and mortality. In order to reach this aim, we use two different sources of information: (1) a public web server named DiseaseConnect ( http://disease-connect.org ) focused on the analysis of common genes and molecular mechanisms shared by diseases by integrating comprehensive omics and literature data; and (2) a literature search directed to find clinical comorbid relationships of infertility etiologies with only those diseases appearing after infertility is manifest…

An Ehrenfeucht-Fraïssé Approach to Collapse Results for First-Order Queries over Embedded Databases

2001

We present a new proof technique for collapse results for first-order queries on databases which are embedded in N or R>o. Our proofs are by means of an explicitly constructed winning strategy for Duplicator in an Ehrenfeucht-FraissE game, and can deal with certain infinite databases where previous, highly involved methods fail. Our main result is that first-order logic has the natural-generic collapse over {N,≤ ,+} for arbitrary (i.e., possibly infinite) databases. Furthermore, a first application of this result shows the natural-generic collapse of first-order logic over {R>o,≤,+} for a certain kind of databases over R>o which consist of a possibly infinite number of regions.

Criminal DNA databases: the European situation

2001

In the last 5 years, a number of European countries have successfully introduced national databases holding the DNA profiles from suspected and convicted criminal offenders as well as from biological stain materials from unsolved crime cases. At present, DNA databases are fully or partially in operation in the UK, The Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and Sweden. Furthermore, in the other European countries, specific legislation will be enacted soon, or the introduction of such databases is being discussed to initiate a legislative process. Numerous differences exist regarding the criteria for a criminal offender to be included in the database, the storage…

PASSIM – an open source software system for managing information in biomedical studies

2007

Abstract Background One of the crucial aspects of day-to-day laboratory information management is collection, storage and retrieval of information about research subjects and biomedical samples. An efficient link between sample data and experiment results is absolutely imperative for a successful outcome of a biomedical study. Currently available software solutions are largely limited to large-scale, expensive commercial Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). Acquiring such LIMS indeed can bring laboratory information management to a higher level, but often implies sufficient investment of time, effort and funds, which are not always available. There is a clear need for lightweig…

IFC and Buildings Lifecycle Management

2008

International audience; This paper presents an extension of the BIM technology that allows to manage information during the entire lifecycle of an AEC project. Usually, AEC projects and facility management are dissociated. Our building information system plays a central role in the improvement of the design and the management process. The building activity generates a great number of data and information of various kinds. The management and the communication of these data by the various participants is complex. Our design and management methods use IFC files to facilitate the sharing process for a better qualification and validation of data.

Optimized search strategy for detecting scientifically strong studies on treatment through PubMed.

2011

OBJECTIVE: To develop optimal MEDLINE search strategies for retrieving sound clinical studies of the etiology, prognosis, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of disorders in adult general medicine. DESIGN: Analytic survey of operating characteristics of search strategies developed by computerized combinations of terms selected to detect studies meeting basic methodologic criteria for direct clinical use in adult general medicine. MEASURES: The sensitivities, specificities, precision, and accuracy of 134,264 unique combinations of search terms were determined by comparison with a manual review of all articles (the "gold standard") in ten internal medicine and general medicine journals for 19…
