To investigate the mechanisms of Zymomonas mobilis uncoupled aerobic metabolism, growth properties of the wild-type strain Zm6 were compared to those of its respiratory mutants cytB and cydB, and the effects of the ATPase inhibitor DCCD on growth and intracellular ATP concentration were studied. The effects of the ATPase inhibitor DCCD on growth and intracellular ATP concentration strongly indicated that the apparent lack of oxidative phosphorylation in aerobically growing Z. mobilis culture might be caused by the ATP hydrolyzing activity of the H(+) -dependent ATPase in all analyzed strains. Neuroleptics may cause side effects, some of which are little known. We describe here a case of gastric dilation related to treatment with a neuroleptic in an elderly man. To our knowledge, such a case has never been reported in the literature. A 76-year-old man, living in a nursing home, was hospitalized for general weakness and abdominal pain. He had dementia with behavioral disorders treated with cyamemazine, a sedative and anxiolytic neuroleptic. The free radical theory of ageing provided an intellectual framework for many laboratories working on ageing. However, experimental and clinical evidence showing that high doses of antioxidants did not have an effect on ageing or on age-associated diseases, cast doubts on the validity of this theory. Data from our own laboratory showed that oxidative stress does not correlate with age, especially in the geriatric population, but rather with the frailty state. This has led us to postulate the free radical theory of frailty in which frailty is associated with oxidative stress, but age itself is not. Purpose. To evaluate the static measurement of the accommodative stimulus-response curve with emoji symbols. Methods. The accommodative stimulus-response curve was measured in 18 subjects using a Hartmann-Shack sensor to obtain the objective accommodative response from the Zernike defocus term. Measurements were acquired at different accommodative demands, from 0 to 3 D with a step of 0.5 D. The reaction of the lithium enolate of the 1,3-dioxolan-4-one derived from optically active (S)-mandelic acid and pivalaldehyde with α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds proceeds readily to give the corresponding Michael adducts in good yields and high diastereoselectivity. Subsequent basic hydrolysis of the acetal and oxidative decarboxylation of the α-hydroxyacid moiety provides chiral 2-substituted 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds with very high enantiomeric excesses.
