The subject of this essay-based dissertation is Hume’s natural philosophy. The dissertation consists of four separate essays and an introduction. These essays do not only treat Hume’s views on the topic of natural philosophy, but his views are placed into a broader context of history of philosophy and science, physics in particular. The introductory section outlines the historical context, shows how the individual essays are connected, expounds what kind of research methodology has been used, and encapsulates the research contributions of the essays. This essay is meant as an introduction to the body of Cronenberg's work up to and including Spider. It is an attempt to analyze what Cronenberg calls his mission in aesthetic and ethical terms, Cronenberg having admitted to Serge Grünberg that he wanted to participate in changing contemporary norms by encouraging the spectator to see something beautiful when his initial reaction is repulsion. I argue that the utopian/dystopian aspect of the diegeses of Cronenberg's early films becomes a structuring element in his later films. Tämä pro gradu -tutkielma käsittelee empirismin tieto-oppia. Analysoitavina ovat tietoteoriassa vaikuttaneiden David Humen (1711–1776), A. J. Ayerin (1910–1989) sekä Eino Kailan (1890–1958) tietokäsitykset. Tulkintakulma on maltillisen valistushistoriallinen. Tutkimuksessa noudatetaan alkuperäistekstejä luettaessa suopeuden periaatetta, mutta esitetään myös kriittisiä huomioita itse oppeja kohtaan sekä pohditaan itse empiristisen tieto-opin mahdollista kehityskelpoisuutta. In contemporary societies we are witnessing an expansion of the messages of human capital. These messages have as their central dimension idea of the self-entrepreneur, which implies a deepening in the logic of activation, while blurring the wage relations. In this scenario, young people with university degrees are becoming a favourite target in the offensive of human capital. The penetration of these human capital messages can be seen in the discourses of young university students who have been forced to leave the country during the crisis.
