The spontaneous use of memory aids at different educational levels

1996

Three groups of students in different educational levels: 8th–9th grade students (average age 15); 10th–11th grade students (average age 16); and college students (average age 21), completed a metamemory questionnaire on the use of external, general, and formal memory aids in everyday life and study situations. Short-term repetition, mental rehearsing, and summary elaboration were the most frequent aids. The least frequently used were those that require a special training to be used effectively (e.g. Digit-letters and method of loci). There were differences in the use of general memory aids due to education level, but not in the case of external and formal memory aids. Results showed also t…

(1) Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the day-to-day variability and year-to-year reproducibility of an accelerometer-based algorithm for sit-to-stand (STS) transitions in a free-living environment among community-dwelling older adults. (2) Methods: Free-living thigh-worn accelerometry was recorded for three to seven days in 86 (women n = 55) community-dwelling older adults, on two occasions separated by one year, to evaluate the long-term consistency of free-living behavior. (3) Results: Year-to-year intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) for the number of STS transitions were 0.79 (95% confidence interval, 0.70–0.86, p < 0.001), for mean angular velocity—0.81 (95…

A global network for the control of snail-borne disease using satellite surveillance and geographic information systems

2001

Abstract At a team residency sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation in Bellagio, Italy, 10-14 April 2000 an organizational plan was conceived to create a global network of collaborating health workers and earth scientists dedicated to the development of computer-based models that can be used for improved control programs for schistosomiasis and other snail-borne diseases of medical and veterinary importance. The models will be assembled using GIS methods, global climate model data, sensor data from earth observing satellites, disease prevalence data, the distribution and abundance of snail hosts, and digital maps of key environmental factors that affect development and propagation of snail…

Aspects and issues of daylighting assessment: A review study

2016

Abstract Proper assessment of indoor daylighting conditions can significantly reduce energy consumption due to artificial lighting and can improve indoor visual comfort. This paper gives a critical review of the fundamental aspects of daylighting indices with the aim to provide a broad overview of methods and indices available to assess daylighting from varying points of view. Assessments cover distribution, availability over time and in specific climatic contexts, uniformity in the space, visual comfort issues and the relations between each of these aspects and a proper building and lighting design. A special focus on the assessment of indoor spatial and temporal uniformity is given. An an…

Epilogue: Designing for Life

2016

The main criterion for HTI design is that it should not only concern the development of a technical artefact and the design of the immediate usage situation, but also help illustrate how technologies can advance the quality of human life. People should be motivated to adopt and use technology by the added value it can bring to everyday life to help them accomplish their goals. The question of how much a technology can improve the quality of human life defines the worth of the particular technology.

Effects Of Variation Of The Color Characteristics Of Lighting Sources By The Environmental Context

2012

Over recent years the importance of using daylight in indoor environments to achieve reductions of energy consumption was largely discussed, but the use of daylight is even more important because of its effects on human beings. Daylight has a more uniform spectral distribution than the artificial sources (especially discharge lamps) and consequently it allows a better color perception; moreover it changes during the day both in intensity and spectral power distribution (SPD). For all these reasons, daylight ensures a high comfort in carrying out all the human activities and is also important to the circadian rhythm regulation; therefore it results necessary to evaluate the entrance of natur…

Affective reactions to musical stimuli reflect emotional use of music in everyday life

2013

Music is a common means for regulating affective states in everyday life, but little is known about the individual differences in this behaviour. We investigated affective reactions to musical stimuli as an explanatory factor. Forty-four young adults rated self-selected music regarding perceived and felt emotions, preference, pleasantness and beauty. The ratings were reduced into five factors representing affective response tendencies. The participants also filled in the Music in Mood Regulation (MMR) questionnaire assessing seven music-related mood regulation strategies in everyday life. High beauty and pleasantness ratings for liked music correlated with the use of music for inducing str…

Technical‐economic evaluation of the effectiveness of measures applied to the artificial lighting system of a school

2021

Ensuring optimum interior lighting is a topic of great importance, as this influences not only the well-being of users but also the optimal performance of visual tasks. Lighting can be natural, but if not sufficient, it can be compensated with artificial lighting. This study highlights a methodology for designing a new lighting system that takes into account both technical and economic aspects. The method was applied to an existing school located in southern Italy, in which the electricity consumption is related to the current lighting system. The school is chosen as being representative of the construction type and layout of many local schools. In addition, the coexistence of several visua…
