Everyday life and the new shapes of identities : The different meanings of ‘things that did not happen’ in the lives of Finnish older persons during …

2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected our lives in many ways since the end of 2019. This paper investigates the everyday lives of Finnish older persons during the first three months of the pandemic when they were required to stay in “quarantine-like conditions.” The study utilises the ‘sociology of nothing’ in exploring the meanings of nothingness in the everyday lives of older people; that is, the things, events and people that were absent from their lives because of the pandemic. The main interest of the article is to reverse the typical analytical focus from ‘things that happened’ to ‘things that did not happen’ and to shed light on the experiences and descriptions of older persons' unlived…

A new hybrid method to improve the ultra-short-term prediction of LOD

2019

Accurate, short-term predictions of Earth orientation parameters (EOP) are needed for many real-time applications including precise tracking and navigation of interplanetary spacecraft, climate forecasting, and disaster prevention. Out of the EOP, the LOD (length of day), which represents the changes in the Earth’s rotation rate, is the most challenging to predict since it is largely affected by the torques associated with changes in atmospheric circulation. In this study, the combination of Copula-based analysis and singular spectrum analysis (SSA) method is introduced to improve the accuracy of the forecasted LOD. The procedure operates as follows: First, we derive the dependence structur…

Anàlisi sobre el perfil i situació dels cuidadors (formals i familiars) de les persones que pateixen Alzheimer, en la zona de la Vall d'Albaida

2013

The Alzheimer’s disease is nowadays known all around the world, however not everybody is aware of the aftermath that this disease produces in those who suffer it directly and indirectly. There is even less awareness of the importance of providing care to those who give care. Therefore I decided to conduct a little research to know the profile of people with Alzheimer and their caregivers residing in the Vall d’Albaida area (Valencia, Spain) and to analyze the services that are provided to them in order to detect whether they are sufficient or they could be improved. The results of the research are shown below; however I would like to “disclose” that it is necessary to get a greater involvem…

Electrochemical conversion of pressurized CO2 at simple silver-based cathodes in undivided cells: study of the effect of pressure and other operative…

2020

Abstract Electrochemical reduction of pressurized CO2 is proposed as an interesting approach to overcome the main hurdle of the CO2 electrochemical conversion in aqueous solution, its low solubility (ca. 0.033 M), and to achieve good faradaic efficiency in CO using simple sheet silver cathodes and undivided cells, thus lowering the overall costs of the process. The effect on the process of CO2 pressure (1–30 bar), current density, nature of the supporting electrolyte and other operative conditions, such as the surface of the cathode or the mixing rate, was studied to enhance the production of CO. It was shown that pressurized conditions allow to improve drastically the current efficiency o…

The Distribution and Chronology of Trading Equipment in Present-Day Latvia in the Tenth to Thirteenth Centuries

2017

This article brings together the main research findings of recent years relating to tenth to thirteenth-century trading equipment from present-day Latvia. Finds of collapsible scales and weights from all regions of Latvia have been mapped and investigated. These include finds from archaeological sites in the Zemgale and Kurzeme regions that have previously not been extensively analysed. Issues relating to the chronology of the scales and weights are discussed. The main trade routes and the dynamics of trade contacts are determined, based on the distribution of the material in different regions. Key words: trade routes, chronology, scales, weights. Daylighting offices: A first step toward an analysis of photobiological effects for design practice purposes

2014

Abstract The research presented in this paper reports an analysis of daylight in three offices with different exposures and characteristics located in Naples (Italy). The goal was to fully investigate daylight characteristics, also considering the circadian impact of daylight entering these offices, with the hope to develop guidelines to better assess daylight quality in built environments. One of the main findings of this research is that the spectral distributions and CCTs of the light reaching the eye of a person seated at the desk in these offices are similar irrespective of the offices' different characteristics (dimensions, surfaces' spectral reflectances, external obstructions, etc.)…

Methods to Evaluate Lighting Quality in Educational Environments

2015

Abstract The current standard for lighting of indoor work places (EN 12464-1) essentially prescribes values of photometric quantities (illuminance, Unified Glare Index, etc.); therefore it does not allow a comprehensive analysis of the luminous environment. In Italy, educational buildings do not always comply with the standard requirements for lighting. Therefore an analysis of their current state is needed and this paper illustrates two methods, developed by the authors, to carry out this investigation: the former is based on the analysis of luminance maps obtained through the HDR imaging technique whereas the latter focuses on the evaluation of non-visual effects of light.

A Survey on Daylighting Education in Italian Universities : Knowledge of Standards, Metrics and Simulation Tools

2021

Daylighting is a strategic topic to achieve sustainable buildings, so it is more and more imperative that it is implemented in architecture curricula to prepare a new generation of daylighting-oriented practitioners. In this frame, the DAYKE project (Daylight Knowledge in Europe) was set up to explore the level of knowledge about daylighting among European professionals and students. DAYKE-Europe was replicated as DAYKE-Italy to study the knowledge of daylight standards, metrics and software among Italian architecture students, and to compare it to that observed within DAYKE-Europe. A sample of 542 questionnaires were collected in five universities. Primary outcomes were: (i) a general low …
