Mass measurements of very high accuracy by time-of-flight ion cyclotron resonance of ions injected into a penning trap

Abstract The possibility of absolute mass measurements using time-of-flight detection of ion cyclotron resonance on ions injected into a Penning trap has been demonstrated. Resolving powers of 2 million have been achieved, with accuracies of about 0.5 ppm. Absolute accuracy is obtained by direct observation of the sum frequency of the cyclotron and the magnetron motions through the use of an azimuthal quadrupole r.f. field to transform initial magnetron motion into cyclotron motion. Imperfections of the Penning trap leading to systematic errors are discussed. Mass-asymmetric fission in the 40ca+142Nd reaction

Shell effects play a major role in fission. Mass-asymmetric fission observed in the spontaneous and low energy fission of actinide nuclei was explained by incorporating the fragment shell properties in liquid drop model. Asymmetric fission has also been observed in the low energy fission of neutron-deficient 180 Hg nuclei in recent β -delayed fission experiments. This low-energy β -delayed fission has been explained in terms of strong shell effects in pre-scission configurations associated with the system after capture. Evidence forB+→J/ψpΛ¯and Search forB0→J/ψpp¯

We have performed a search for the decays ${B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}p\overline{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ and ${B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}p\overline{p}$ in a data set of $(88.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ decays collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Four charged $B$ candidates have been observed with an expected background of $0.21\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.14$ events. Low energy properties of color-flavor locked superconductors

We discuss some low energy properties of color-flavor locked (CFL) superconductors. First, we study how an external magnetic field affects their Goldstone physics in the chiral limit, stressing that there is a long-range component of the field that penetrates the superconductor. We note that the most remarkable effect of the applied field is giving a mass to the charged pions and kaons. By estimating this effect, we see that for values $e B \sim 2 f_\pi \Delta$, where $\Delta$ is the quark gap, and $f_\pi$ the pion decay constant, the charged Goldstone bosons become so heavy, that they turn out to be unstable. Ion traps in nuclear physics : recent results and achievements

Ion traps offer a way to determine nuclear binding energies through atomic mass measurements with a high accuracy and they are routinely used to provide isotopically or even isomerically pure beams of short-living ions for post-trap decay spectroscopy experiments. In this review, different ion-trapping techniques and progresses in recent nuclear physics experiments employing low-energy ion traps are discussed. Natural Convection Cooling of a Hot Vertical Wall Wet by a Falling Liquid Film

Abstract The system studied is a plane channel in which one of the two vertical walls is kept at an arbitrary temperature profile and may be partially or completely wet by a falling liquid film, while the opposite wall is adiabatic. Air from the environment flows along the channel with a mass flow rate which depends on the balance between hydraulic resistances and buoyancy forces. These latter, in their turn, depend on the distribution of temperature and humidity (hence, density) along the channel and eventually on the heat and mass transferred from wall and film to the humid air. Can we measure the neutrino mass hierarchy in the sky?

Cosmological probes are steadily reducing the total neutrino mass window, resulting in constraints on the neutrino-mass degeneracy as the most significant outcome. In this work we explore the discovery potential of cosmological probes to constrain the neutrino hierarchy, and point out some subtleties that could yield spurious claims of detection. This has an important implication for next generation of double beta decay experiments, that will be able to achieve a positive signal in the case of degenerate or inverted hierarchy of Majorana neutrinos. Non-analog decay of 74Rb

The magnitude of the Coulomb mixing parameter δ1 IM has been experimentally deduced, for the first time, for the β decay of 74Rb. The estimated magnitude is derived from the feeding of the non-analog first excited 0+ state in 74Kr. The inferred upper limit of 0.07% is small compared to theoretical predictions. The half-life was measured to be 64.90(9) ms. peerReviewed
